Loretta Lynn - RIP

Fist City is one of my favorites of hers. All the others were singing about standing by their man when there was another woman and she was threatening physical violence upon the women who would dare cross that line. Tough broad and nobody else was woman enough to take her man.

The most important event in the history of life

Heard this old Radiolab while I was driving to the store today. It's a fascinating story about how, after life appeared, it was basically the same for 2 billion years. Tiny, boring, simple. And then something happened. Two cells somehow came together, one inside the other, and while this would normally result in death for one or both, in this case, it worked, and this partnership - this single cell - was the ultimate Genghis Khan, the progenitor of all complex life on Earth today.

Mike Woodson on return of IU-Kentucky series: 'That can possibly happen'

Story here from Woodson's appearance on "College Hoops Today" with Jon Rothstein, in which he details how Indiana and Kentucky's series could make its way back into IU's schedule.

Biden Exec Order Requiring Vaccination for

healthcare workers at government-contracting facilities (aren't they all?) (thus, ok to fire refusers) upheld by SCOTUS through refusal to hear case.

Executive Orders - the Dictator’s minor league

Remember when vaccinations allegedly prevented the spread of Covid? And you were a murderer if you disagreed? Turns out us vaccinated folks probably killed more than the unvaccinated - our illness was less, often even undetected, and we spread more than the unvaccinated, who KNEW they were sick.

i got Covid after 5 jabs
Still took a 6th

Getting me a shingles jab soon

Friday Funnies

Two guys are walking through the woods one day when they stumble across a big deep hole.

The first guy peers into it and says, “Wow! That looks deep.”

The second guy says, “It sure does. Let’s throw a few pebbles in there and see how deep it is. We’ll be able to tell the depth by how long it is before we hear the noise of the pebbles landing.”

So they pick up a few pebbles and throw them in and wait. Nothing. There’s no noise.

The first guy says, “Jeeez. That is really deep. I know, let’s throw one of these great big rocks down there. Those should make a noise.”

So they pick up a couple football-sized rocks and toss them into the hole and wait… and wait… Again, nothing.

They look at each other in amazement. Then the first guy gets a determined look on his face and says, “Hey, over here in the weeds, there’s a railroad tie. Help me carry it over. When we toss that sucker in, it’s gotta make some noise.”

So the two of them drag the heavy tie over to the hole and heave it in. Once again, not a sound comes from the hole.

Suddenly, out of the nearby woods, a goat appears, running like the wind. It rushes toward the two men, then right past them, running as fast as it’s legs will carry it. Suddenly it leaps in the air and into the hole.

The two men are astonished with what they’ve just seen and look at each other in amazement.

Then, out of the woods comes a farmer who spots the men and ambles over. He asks them, “Hey, you two guys seen my goat out here?”

The first guy says, “You bet we did! Craziest thing I ever saw. It came running like crazy and just jumped into this hole and disappeared!”

“Nah”, says the farmer, “That couldn’t have been my goat. My goat was chained to a railroad tie.”

D1Baseball ranks IU's program as 42nd in the country...

D1Baseball started ranking the top 100 programs back in 2015 and updated the list every two years. Normally, their most recent ranking would have been in 2021, but with Covid impacting 2020, they pushed it back to this year. They awarded points for making regionals, winning regionals, reaching the CWS, and winning the CWS in the last five years, while awarding a fewer amount of points for five to 10 years ago which is as far as they go back in their evaluation. That gave them a starting point and they then had a panel of national sportswriters make adjustments based on evaluations of coaching staff quality and stability, facilities, scholarship/financial aid situation, conference dynamics, momentum, and recruiting and player development proficiency. Here are the B1G rankings of those programs ranked in the top 100 starting with the lowest ranking. Five B1G programs didn't make the rankings. You can guess where the D1Baseball's top programs are located or what conference they are in, and that will probably be the case for the rest of eternity. The 2019 standings are in parenthesis.

Minnesota - 93rd (49th)
Illinois - 84th (50th)
OSU - 82nd (54th)
Iowa - 73rd (67th)
Nebraska - 43rd (51st)
Indiana - 42nd (32nd)
Maryland - 37th (70th)
Michigan - 28th (31st)

Here are their comments on IU:

The Hoosiers are one of two Big Ten teams to reach the College World Series over the past two decades, and there’s a very high commitment level for college baseball from the administration. It’s a big reason why they were able to segue from Tracy Smith to highly accomplished assistant Chris Lemonis, and now to Jeff Mercer, who did a terrific job during his time at Wright State. IU last reached the NCAA postseason back in 2019 — Mercer’s first season — with a 37-23 overall record. Since that point, though, the Hoosiers went 26-18 and missed the tourney in ’21 before having a losing record last season with a 27-32 mark. There’s no doubt IU needs to flip the script during the upcoming season, but this is still a program with excellent facilities in the Big Ten, a strong coaching staff and a solid recruiting base with access to the South and large metro areas such as Indianapolis and Chicago.
