IU recruit Hogan Denny is in the state finals this weekend...

He is the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year. Another IU recruit that is playing in the state finals is Griffin Tobias. Both players are among a list of 22 players to keep an eye on this weekend. Here are the capsules on both players.

Denny is the Indiana baseball Gatorade Player of the Year and a dominant two-way player for the Mooresville Pioneers. The IU commit is batting .485 with 41 runs scored, 40 RBIs, 13 doubles, 11 home runs, three triples and 23 stolen bases. On the mound, Denny is 2-0 with 11 saves. He has a 0.69 ERA and 73 strikeouts over 40⅓ innings.

Griffin Tobias of Lake Central is a 5-11, 187-pound right-handed pitcher with a fastball touching 93 mph. He's the No. 6 overall senior in Indiana and the third-rated righty, per PrepBaseballReport. On the mound, Tobias is 7-2 with 0.97 ERA and 89 strikeouts over 58 innings. At the plate, Tobias is batting .313 with 18 runs scored, 18 RBIs, four doubles, three triples, one home run, 10 walks and just 11 strikeouts.

Northwestern 2024

Without Buie, Northwestern may have the most boring team in the BT in 2024-25.

Ty Berry and Brooks Barnhizer are the headliners. The rotation guys look to be:

--Ty Berry, 6'3"
--Brooks Barnhizer, 6'6"
--John Leach, 6'4" TR
--Matthew Nicholson, 7'0"
--Nick Martinelli, 6'7"
--Luke Hunger, 6'10"
--Keenan Fitzmorris, 7'0" TR
--KJ Windham, 6'3"

The first 5 listed look like the starters. Leach is a 5th year guy who had a nice year at Fairfield as a combo guard. Hunger is a viable back-up at Center/PF. Fitzmorris was not a highly ranked guy. Windham, from Indy, looks like he might play significant minutes although he was only a 130ish rated recruit.

Prediction: Depth is a major concern here. NW's '24 class and transfer class taken together was probably the worst in the BT, with MN being the only competition. NW really only has 6 guys who look like capable BT players. Leach looks may be the back-up PG as well as the starting 2. The team looks slow and offensively challenged, Roll players like Marinelli, Nicholson & Hunger who prospered in Buie's shadow may have a tougher go without him. NW looks like a 11th-15th place BT team in '24/25.

Some good news after a disappointing season

In hindsight I got caught up in the great expectations for the 24 season. I set aside questions about pitching and defense up the middle focusing on offense. These are cardinal sins in baseball. I went to Conway and have accommodations & tix in Omaha. I didn’t get them hoping to see Kentucky.

Nonetheless IMO this program is in the best shape it has ever been. Admittedly my time at IU started in McNutt right across Fee Lane from Sembower Field. There is some from IU base twitter post* including honors for two kids Denny & Hanley (IN & OH player of the year honors) from what is probably the best incoming recruiting class in IU history if we survive the MLB draft.

Inflation and the Poor

Schools are out, but continue to provide meals to families. Here, this week, day 1 of the summer meal program ran out of food - one site by 10:15 am, others in only 30 minutes.

Quote from a single mother:

“It’s huge. The price of food has tripled and gas and it’s just hard to budget out that extra food for the summer that you know that they were receiving in school.”

Let’s go Brandon!

Remember the Titan!

Titan was the submersible that imploded while doing a sightseeing dive to the Titanic. Here’s a good detailed story about what led to that implosion:

Where do you stand on capital punishment?

There's a recent story about China's execution of a father and mistress who threw two toddlers off a 15 story balcony, purposely. I personally think China got this one right, assuming the facts as reported are accurate. This is about as heinous and selfish as it gets. That being said, I've always supported the death penalty, among harsher punishment generally.

Do you agree with China's decision given the facts in the article? If not, do you support capital punishment under any other circumstances?

Don Fischer Talks Football

In an interview with Indiana Sports Talk, Fisch talks about CC and the team at around the 25:45 mark.

Really interesting notes from Fisch about how practice is run and how they prep for practice.
