More on the NIL mess I found interesting... From today's IBJ.

A few excerpts and quotes on the NCAA's proposed mandatory disclosure rules that I found interesting...

..... For some, the plan looks like an overstep by the Indianapolis-based NCAA and power conferences that will eventually lead them back to court. “Honest question here for those in the #NIL space, as well as all fans of sports: WHY should a college athlete be required to submit, for approval by the NCAA (or any other group) an NIL deal over $600 (as proposed by the NCAA)?” Russell White, the head of The Collective Association, posted on social media.

.... Other legal experts see ample precedent in professional sports leagues to support the attempt to regulate NIL. "The idea that there’s going to be a whole lot of litigation around this disclosure requirement, to me, was not completely well thought out,” said Jay Ezelle, an Alabama attorney who has been involved in NCAA cases and antitrust lawsuits.

.... Sports law attorney Mit Winter said disclosure isn’t as problematic as rules that target what the NCAA deems to be boosters and the difficulty in determining fair-market value.

And finally,
..... Gabe Feldman, a sports law professor at Tulane, said it is common for pro leagues to regulate outside sources of income for athletes to prevent circumvention of salary caps and luxury taxes by teams. “Now the big difference is, obviously, the pro sports rules are collectively bargained. These are not. So there will there will be no antitrust immunity for these cases,” Feldman said.

Here's a link to the whole article... probably a pay wall.

New TV Advice

Hoping to get a new TV this weekend. Do watch a lot of sports, but other than that we just watch standard stuff; YouTube videos, movies, etc, NO gaming.
Current favorite is the Samsung 65" QLED 4k 70D. It has the 120hz processor, which is supposed to be better for sports.
Does anyone have this TV or an equivalent they'd like to comment on? Thanks.

Why were these 2 Illegals released??

This was one of several incidents of attempted gate breaches last spring that when looked at as a whole appeared to be tests of base security by unknown entities (other than the San Diego incident which was a whole other kind of strange)...

Why in the world where these known illegals who attempted to breach a Marine Base released on bond? Who put up the bond?? What are the odds that they ever show up in court again?

Took them nearly 2 years to figure out this was rife with fraud... 🙄

More likely their concern was that it was about to be brought to the attention of the American voter...

California 2023 Job Gains Weren't Really There

"With the fourth quarter revision, calendar year 2023 saw essentially no net job growth (+9,000 jobs overall)"

There were previous instances of California crowing about all the jobs they were adding each month. It turns out they were all adjusted down and away when the real numbers came in. Monthly numbers are reported via survey.

California would be a top 5 economy in the world if it was a sovereign country and they only added 9k jobs in all of 2023. Yet we're expected to believe that the US economy is robust and the envy of the world right now while the largest subnational component of the US economy isn't growing.

Politicking over hostages

Came across these clips in searching for the national response and mood to the Iranian hostages.

Re the first clip: can you imagine a president since 2016 sitting down for a grilling like this Face the Nation clip? Also, about halfway through, a reporter asks "Is this still a crisis? Should we still be talking about this every day? Reporting the number of days of captivity? Tying yellow ribbons around trees and flying flags at half mast? [Is any of that going on now? Is Biden flying flags at half staff until our hostages come home?**]. Another asks Carter: why aren't you talking about it more?

And here, William Casey and Joseph Verner Reed can go **** themselves for trying to, or succeeding in, negotiating a deal to prevent the hostage release until Reagan came into office:

**No, he hasn't ordered that, but here's something I just discovered: you can get an app on your phone telling you when to fly your flag at half staff:
