Tuesday Night Recruiting Watch: Sectionals

I will be at Noblesville High School tonight for the opening round matchups for the loaded Sectional 8. Jim Coyle will be at Martinsville for the opening round games of Sectional 14.

Tonight's opening round games for Sectional 8 will first feature Zionsville vs host Noblesville followed by Fishers vs Westfield, whereas for Sectional 14, Jim will be watching Columbus East vs Bloomington North followed by Bloomington South vs host Martinsville. Both games will take place at 6pm and around 7:30.

Few Indiana targets we will be watching tonight are Zionsville's Logan Imes (2023, G), Bloomington North's JQ Roberts (2023, F), and Fishers' Jalen Haralson (2025, G). Roberts and Haralson already have an official offer from Indiana whereas Imes is only interest from the Hoosiers at this point.

Also playing tonight is Purdue signee Braden Smith (2022, G) for Westfield.

Semi Final games will take place on Friday 3/4. For Sectional 8, Carmel will play the winner of Zionsville/Noblesville and Hamilton Southeastern will play the winner of Fishers/Westfield. For Sectional 14, Columbus North will play the winner of Bloomington North/Columbus East and East Central will play the winner of Bloomington South/Martinsville

Be sure to follow along this thread and on twitter @KylerStaley and @jimcoyleISB for live updates throughout both games.

Should be an excellent night of Indiana High School hoops!

Miami (OH) @ IU: IU drubs the Redhawks, 15-2...

There are no hits in the game so far on a nice day with the temp at 65. The commentators said there is a big crowd on hand for the home opener. Hayden has had some control problems with 3 walks and he walked two in the 2nd. Hayden left the two walks on at 2nd and 3rd with all three outs on strikeouts in the inning. Hayden is at 44 pitches through two innings and he has also been charged with an error which didn't hurt IU.

ATF Just Made a Bunch of People Felons in Waiting.

A rant about the stupidity of our current gun laws and the agency who enforces them.

Long story short, a company (Diversified Manufacturing) was selling a solvent trap kit that could be machined into a suppressor. It's legal to make your own suppressor, you just need to submit a Form 1 to ATF, describe what you're doing, pay the NFA tax, register the suppressor and abide by all the other NFA regulations governing the item. Fast forward to 2020 and the ATF decided the kit itself is a suppressor and raided the business, despite the fact that it's essentially an aluminum tube and solid blocks of aluminum that fit into the tube. You literally can't fire anything through it because it is made up of pieces of solid aluminum.

Yesterday, ATF sent everyone who had submitted a Form 1 (regardless of whether it came from Diversified or not) a denial. The reason for the denial is that they have an illegal suppressor and it can't be registered because it was never transferred to them via a Form 4 as an NFA item, despite the fact that it wasn't considered an NFA item at the time they'd taken possession and then followed the regs to legally make a suppressor.

Everyone that got one of these denial letters has essentially ratted themselves out as being in possession of an illegal NFA item. The Form 1 includes name, address, SS#, a description of the item you're manufacturing, where you purchased the materials, etc... Possessing an illegal NFA item is bad juju and everyone who got the blanket denial letter is now in possession of an illegal NFA item.

"Violations of the NFA are punishable by 10 years in prison, forfeiture of all devices or firearms in violation, and the individuals right to own or possess additional firearms in the future. In addition, there is a penalty of $10,000 for each of certain violations.

In addition, a willful attempt to evade or defeat a tax imposed by the National Firearms Act is also a felony which is punishable by up to 5 years in Jail and a $100,000 fine under the tax evasion statutes. This penalty could be increased to $250,000 for individuals and $500,000 for corporations."

People shouldn't ever wonder why there are law abiding gun owners who hate the ATF.

From someone who got a denial letter:
Yep, got my "denial" yesterday afternoon.
I have an unmodified JK Armanent "solvent trap" that was perfectly legal, now being told that in it's unmodified form, is according to the ATF, a suppressor, so I can't do a form 1 to modify it, according to the rules, because it is already considered a suppressor.
And technically, I can't form 4 it, because I already have it in my possession and it wasn't transferred via a form 4 when I bought it, when it was legal to own it without transfer.
And just because I have it, it is "illegal".
What a bunch of ********.

Rooting for the Spartans tonight

Lunardi currently has 9 B1G teams in including Rutgers, Michigan and IU. Of those 3 Michigan has by far the toughest finish at home with MSU and Iowa and closing at OSU. 3 tough games in 6 days.

Very good chance they lose all 3 and finish 9-11 in the B1G. Even winning one puts them at 10-10 in the B1G but just 16 total wins. I’d feel a whole lot better being the 8th team out of 9 than the 9th out of 9.

Build an IU team, 1 player from each of the last 5 coaches

Not sure how this started, but I was running through hypothetical teams using 1 player from each of the last 5 coaches at IU

Davis
Sampson
Crean
Miller
Woody

you can only use a player at the position he primarily played during his time at IU. No Oladipo at PG. You can use players who overlapped coaches.

I’ll go:
Davis - Jeffries - PF
Sampson - Gordon - SG
Crean - Yogi -PG
Miller- Langford -SF
Woodson - TJD - C

any other fun combos you can come up with?

Senior Class Award

Vote for Ali Patberg for the women's Senior Class Award.

We don't have a candidate this year on the Men's side so you can vote for Brad Davison lol.

What does “leader of the free world” mean these days?

Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, and Finland have all broken with long standing historical doctrine and took firm anti-Putin positions. The USA? We don’t even seem to be an effective cheerleader.

What Putin is doing to Ukraine is unspeakably awful. Civilians are now being slaughtered, apparently deliberately. Our foreign policy brain trust is cloistered behind a wall of silence.. Biden sends Jen Psaki to the Sunday Show to talk about this? Biden was in his weekend basement and lord knows where Harris is. The rest of the free world is way ahead of us on this, taking taking risks, and changing history. The USA? Shamefully we are stuck on climate change dogma, lukewarm sanctions riddled with loopholes, and ‘we stand by Ukraine” platitudes.

Ukraine has captured the hearts and minds

We have forgotten that Ukraine is a corrupt country including questionable financial ties with individuals in the highest levels of our government. Its criminal element, which no doubt has some level of official protection, reaches well into human trafficking and drug trade in many parts of the world. Cyber crime has been traced to Ukrainian operatives.

Yet we are all in on supporting Ukraine. The German reaction has been nothing short of astounding. Putin has managed to shake Europe to its core. I think we are seeing significant world history being made in real time.

I don’t recall this kind of grass-roots support about world events that we have only marginal interest in ever.

And the Denver City Building. . .
