How bad is the guard play?

Before Rob was hurt he was hitting less than 32% from the field and less than 44% of his free throws. He should have been on the bench for his poor offensive play. Except everyone else is worse. And when Rob went down not the next man up but the next three men up responded by being suspended for violating curfew the night before a game. That poor judgement is only exceeded by when they are handling the ball in crunch time.

I have no idea what Woody can do with a backcourt that cannot think and dribble at the same time.

Poor TJD. At the end of the game he tried to execute the game plan and kick the ball out to an open shooter. And the morning after everyone is saying "what was he thinking?"

Lander

It is simply amazing to me how poor his bbal iq is. For the couple of minutes he was in he throws a pass to I think Geronimo way in the corner where he can do nothing but get boxed in. I think it may have gone out of bounds anyway. Then he drives in and dribbles it off his foot but it somehow goes off a Wisconsin guy so we keep it. Boy I sure hope JHS is ready to be a point guard from day one cause Lander is just wow almost looking like divison three.

Nothing on here about Trudeau declaring martial law?

Internal Tension Building?

Some speculative thoughts with no inside sources…

After the last few games, I’d assume there are a few players in the locker room who are pretty pissed off with the play and behavior of some of their teammates.

If anyone on the team really cares about winning, then I’d have to assume there may have been some quiet and/or real tension in the locker room after last night’s game. But maybe not if they’re a close group and friends.

IU should have won last night but our team is mentally weak - I also think the coach takes some blame if you look at our offense.

Anyway, I’m back to no longer watching live and will watch the recordings. I really hope there’s a way for us to make the tourney since it’s my favorite time of the year.

Blaming the Refs

Just… stop.

Maybe that play is not reviewable, but it was the right call. Also, Davis gets those calls because he’s a badass and Woodson had Miller Kopp guarding him. I think he got him with the body anyway.

Trying to reduce a 40 minute game into two plays is a fools errand. IU should have been up 10 at that point.

This IU team loses to them 9 out of 10 times. They are just a much better team. Their all-American is a legit pro.

This is a recording: Wanted - GUARDS

Led by Xavier’s salty 3-15 performance and 1-6 from 3, our guards were yet again the reason for our loss. I won’t mention another ghost performance by Kopp. He truly just brings zero to the team. 15 league games and the starter Kopp is yet to make more than 2 FG’s in a single game.

Back to our woeful guards last night. Xavier / Bates / Galloway / Lander / Stewart shot a combined 9-36.
Take your pic on POTG. Was it our starting PG Xavier with a stat line of 3-16 FG’s, 1-6 threes, and 5 turnovers and not a single free throw attempt? Or, was it our highly touted 5 star reserve guard Tamar Bates? TB was 0-5 FG’s, O-2 threes and yep, not a single free throw attempt. So our current senior PG along with our “future” combined for 3-21 FG’s, 1-8 from three and my favorite, zero free throws.

This has been the case ongoing for years and the bottom line is our guards as a collective group are terrible. They are the reason we can’t beat anyone. They are the reason we can’t close our games. They are the reason we will miss the tourney for a 6th consecutive year. Outside of Romeo’s one season, we haven’t had a difference maker at the guard spot since Yogi. This remains the biggest problem we have and it’s been this way for 6 years. Until it’s fixed, what we have seen the last several years is what we should expect to see.

We lost both games to Bucky..

In the last 4 min of the first half, and last 8 min of second half.

I don't have time to do the research and the math, but I bet of the 80 min in two games combined, we we winning for 65 of those 80 minutes (or at least...not losing). In both games, we lost our momentum in the last 4 min of the first half (after outplaying them), and then fell on our di%ks in the final 8 minutes.

I'll do X a favor and not combine his stat lines for the two games. It has to be ugly.

Coming to grips on some things.

1. Our margin for error is so thin with this team, that Rob Phinisee is legitimately the difference between being an NCAA team and not. We were safely an NCAA team when he played…and we are decidedly NOT an NCAA team without him. Who’d have thunk he’d be the difference.

2. We aren’t going to make the NCAA because we aren’t good enough to win 3+ out of 5 against our remaining schedule.

3. Another year being in this position is depressing.

4. Wyoming is ranked 22nd in the country and a “lock” for the NCAAs. Wy flipping Oming.

5. As it stands today…next year could be worse.

6. Even if we somehow do win 4 more games, including BTT…and do get an at large… we aren’t good enough to do any damage in the tourney.

7. Despite Cavs glowing reviews, and what’s becoming annoying, optimism…our backcourt isn’t capable. We have exactly zero NBA level players on our roster right now.

Can’t honestly imagine coaching this team.

More interested in mouthing off and fake tough guy BS. Can’t shoot a lick. Not even layups and/or free throws. No composure. Not a winner in the bunch. This will sound harsh, but I’m not sure he shouldn’t totally clean house. It’ll probably take a couple years to do it, but we won’t win until these cats are gone.

Last handful of possessions

Trey shoots two 3s.

X shoots two outside shots.

Parker shoots a 26 foot shot, with a defender all over him…out of a time out.

Two problems.

1. We have ZERO players we can rely on to make plays in those situations. Rob is the closest thing, and he’s out.

2. Our coaching staff seems to have no ability and/or creativity to call good plays down the stretch. That’s what we get coming out of that timeout? Those are the guys we end up having take those shots coming down the stretch?

Our talent isn’t good. Sorry Cav, we’re just not very good top to bottom. And while I like a lot of what Woody brings to the program. He isn’t a coach that’s going to bring a lesser talented team along to wins.
