RHP Jack Perkins is on the mound for IU after throwing 28 pitches against the Terps on Thursday night and he has an ERA of 5.19 in 78.1 IP with a WHIP of 1.50 and an OBA of .236.
RHP Nick Dean, the Terps Sunday pitcher during the regular season is on the mound for the Terps with an ERA of 4.54 in 71.1 IP with a WHIP of 1.36 and an OBA of .258.

During the regular season, Perkins often struggled in the first inning or two before settling down, but I don't think he can afford to do that against the most formidable lineup in the the B1G this season, so we will see. I thought they might start the game out with Braydon Tucker with Perkins maybe being used in relief again at some point, but obviously that wasn't the plan. Whalen is back in the lineup after taking a pitch to the head last night.

In IU's 1st, Glasser leads off with a single. Whalen goes down swinging for the 1st out. Glasser steals 2nd. Jessee strikes out for the 2nd out with Glasser still at 2nd. Pyne flies out to end IU's 1st.

In the Terps 1st, Perkins has a good start and puts them down in order.

In the T2nd, Mathison grounds out to lead off. Ellis then walks to put a man on with one out. Tibbetts singles to put runners on the corners with one out. Ellis scores on a SF by Doanes with Tibbetts on 1st and two outs. Serruto strikes out to end IU's 2nd.

In the Terps 2nd, they are at the 4 thru 6 hitters. They said the wind is blowing in which should help to hold down the Terps power hitters which is almost their entire lineup. Perkins gets the leadoff man on a grounder. Perkins then walks a batter on a 3-2 count with one out. Doanes makes a great catch in foul territory for the 2nd out with the runner still at 1st. A grounder ends the inning and Perkins has been sharp so far.

In IU's 3rd, we are at the top of the order in Glasser. Glasser reaches on a hard-hit grounder to 3B which is scored an error. A SAC bunt attempt by Whalen ends up with Glasser being forced at 2nd with Whalen reaching for the first out and a man on. A single by Jessee leads to Whalen scoring in what was an error on a bobbled ball in the outfield and then a throwing error with both charged to the center fielder. Jessee ends up on 2nd with one out. Pyne flies out for the 2nd out. Mathison grounds out to the pitcher to end IU's 3rd.

In the B3rd, we are at the 8, 9, and 1 hitters. The leadoff hitter doubles for the Terps first hit of the game and that is the 10th double by the Terps against IU pitching counting the Thursday game. Perkins gets a big K for the 1st out with the runner still at 2nd and we are at the top of the order. A grounder moves the runner to 3rd with two outs and the B1G Player of the Year is up in Alleyne who was charged with both errors in IU's 3rd. A hard hit liner is caught by Pyne to end the inning with the leadoff hitter stranded at 2nd.

In the T4th, Ellis strikes out to lead off and the Terps starter is at a PC of 60 starting this inning. Tibbetts grounds out for the 2nd out. Doanes grounds out to end IU's 4th.

In the B4th, Perkins is at a PC of 42 and he faces the 3 thru 5 hitters. Perkins is still looking good and he gets the leadoff hitter on a K. Perkins then gives up a one-out double. A single scores the runner from 2nd and it is 2-1 with a man on 1st and one out. A DP ends the inning.

In the T5th, Serruto leads off by grounding out and we are at the top of the order in Glasser. Glasser is hit by a pitch to put a runner on with one out. After being ahead 3-0, Whalen goes down swinging for the 2nd out. Jessee grounds out to end IU's 5th, and the Terps pitcher is at 89 pitches, so we may see him for just one more inning.

In the Terps 5th, after getting the first two hitters, Perkins gave up three straight singles to tie the game, but Perkins gets a K to finally end the inning.

In IU's 6th, the 4 thru 6 hitters are up and the Terps starter is back out there in what may be his last inning and Pyne doubles to lead off. Mathison sends Pyne to 3rd on a ground out for the first out. Ellis doubles to give IU the lead back 3-2 and a runner in scoring position with one out. Tibbetts flies out to RF for the 2nd out with Ellis holding at 2nd. Dean with a PC of 99 is pulled as the Terps go to the bullpen to bring in RHP Nigel Belgrave with an ERA of 5.40 in 16.2 IP, and Belgrave pitched the last two innings of IU's loss to the Terps on Thursday. Belgrave walks Doanes on four pitches to put runner on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Serruto hits a grounder and as Ellis reaches 3rd the Terps player loses the ball out of his glove with some help from Ellis and after a long discussion the umps go to a review. The Terps fielder never touched the bag for a force out, but it appears he tagged Ellis before reaching and then lost the ball out of this glove with some contact by Ellis. After the review, the umps decide that Ellis was safe in what will be a controversial ruling especially for the Terps. The bases are loaded with two outs and Glasser up. Glasser strikes out to end IU's 6th.

In the B6th, IU goes to LHP Ryan Kraft with an ERA of 9.84 in 39.1 IP and he was really struggling for a while but has pitched better of late. Perkins pitched a really good game. Kraft faces the 4 thru 6 hitters. Kraft went from 0-2 on the leadoff man to walking him. A single puts runner on 1st and 2nd and no outs. Mercer has a quick hook on Kraft, bringing in RHP Braydon Tucker with an ERA of 6.23 in 43.1 IP and he has two runners on with no outs. On a bungled play, Tucker tried to field a bunt attempt and then threw the ball away at 1st scoring both runners to give the Terps their first lead of the game at 4-3 with both runs unearned. A line out to Doanes gets the first out with a runner at 2nd. Tucker then gets the next two batters on a ground out and a K to end the inning and errors have played a big part in this game for both teams.

In the T7th, IU has their 2 thru 4 hitters up and the Terps go to the bullpen to bring in RHP Sean Heine with an ERA of 8.03 in 24.2 IP. Whalen goes down on a questionable strike three call. Jessee grounds out for the 2nd out. Pyne singles to put one on and two outs. Mathison then singles to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs. Mathison grounds out to the pitcher to end IU's 7th.

In MD's 7th, Tucker is back on the mound to face the top of the order. Tucker gets the leadoff man on a grounder. Tucker then walks a man with one out. A deep fly ball is caught on the warning track for out No. 2 and the runner still on 1st. A ground out ends the inning.

In the T8th, MD goes to the bullpen again and bring in RHP Gavin Stellpflug with an ERA of 8.53 in 6.1 IP and he will face the bottom of the order starting with Tibbetts. Tibbetts strikes out for the first out. Doanes fouls out and Serruto flies out to end IU's 8th. IU has faced back-to-back bullpen pitchers with elevated numbers and hasn't been able to mount much of the threat except for runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs in the 7th.

In the Terps 8th, Tucker gets the first two batters on a ground out and flyout. Tucker makes a really good play on a grounder to get the runner at 1st to end the inning.

IU is down to their last three outs of the season if they can't do anything in the 9th and they have the top of the order up in Glasser. Glasser leads off with a double. Whalen who was 0-19 at the plate over the last few games, gets a big single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Goforth pinch hits for Jessee who is getting treatment for an injury. A DP scores Glasser from 3rd with two outs and Pyne up. Pyne grounds out and IU tries to hold MD in the 9th and put it in extra innings.

In the B9th, MD is at their 8, 9, and 1 hitters and Murrison has come in at RF. Tucker gets the leadoff man on a K. On a very close play at 1st, the runner is called safe so Mercer uses one of his challenges, but replays show that it was a tie going to the runner, and the call is upheld. We are at the top of the order with one out and a man on 1st. A base hit puts runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and Alleyne, the Terps most dangerous hitter, is up. Tucker did what he couldn't do and that was walk Alleyne to load the bases with one out, as IU brings everyone in as we need a K, pop out or DP ball. On a 3-2 count Tucker got a grounder to get the force out at the plate for two outs. A ground out to Tibbetts ends the inning as Tucker put himself into a jam and pitched his way out of it.

Haven't watched the Hoosiers until this year. Seems they have an awful lot of players who like to watch strikes go by without reacting. They need a lot more offensive aware players in the future.

In the T10th, IU has their 5 thru 7 hitters up. The Terps go to LHP Michael Walsh with an ERA of 16.20 in 5 IP. Mathison flies out to leadoff. Ellis grounds out for the 2nd out. Tibbetts strikes out to end IU's 10th.

In the B10th, Tucker faces the 5 thru 7 hitters. Tucker gets the leadoff hitter on a fly. On a good play by Pyne at 3rd and Tibbetts at 1st, they get a ground out for the 2nd out. Tucker gets a K to end the inning.

Great call (for us) by home plate umpire on 3rd strike

In the T11th, IU is at the 8, 9, and 1 hitters in the lineup. Doanes strikes out to lead off. Serruto, our weakest hitter in the lineup is hit by a pitch to put a runner on and the top of the order in Glasser is up and one out. Serruto takes 2nd on a WP and Vecrumba comes in to pinch run for Serruto. Glasser takes a called third strike to bring up Whalen with two outs and a man on 2nd. The Terps decide to intentionally walk Whalen to get to Murrison with runners on 1st and 2nd and two outs. Murrison walks to bring up Pyne, a more dangerous hitter for the Terps and they go to the bullpen to bring in RHP Will Glock with an ERA of 4.96 in 16.1 IP. A single by Pyne drives in two runs and IU takes a 6-4 lead. IU has runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs and Mathison up. Mathison goes down on a K to end a very productive 11th inning for IU.

In the B11th, Tucker faces the 8, 9, and 1 hitters. Ellis is behind the plate. Tucker gets the all-important leadoff hitter on a K. A flyout to Whalen puts IU just one out away from the win. A base hit puts a runner on to bring up Alleyne with two outs. The runner takes 2nd and he is meaningless. Tucker strikes out the B1G Player of the Year to win the game and eliminate the overwhelming favorite to win the tournament,

IU faces a well-rested Rutgers team late tonight to try to extend the season another day and I'm not even going to try to guess who will start the game on the mound. Both the Terps and IU were hurt by errors today and it looked like Tucker might have ended up being the goat with his throwing error giving the Terps two unearned runs in the 6th, but he made up for it with some great pitching when he absolutely had to have it. I sure thought we were dead in the water in the B9th with the bases loaded and one out, but Tucker got himself out of a jam to put it in extra innings and give IU a chance. Maryland barely outhit IU by 11 to 10, and Pyne was 3 for 6 to include a double, and he had the hit that gave IU the win with two runs scoring. Glasser was the other multi-hit player going 2 for 5. Perkins, after throwing 28 pitches in relief on Thursday in which he brought in the winning run on a hit batter, made up for it by pitching really well as the starter. He went 5 IP giving up 6 hits, 2 ERs, 5 Ks, and 1 BB. Kraft came in and was pulled in a quick hook by Mercer after getting no outs and giving up a hit and a BB while being charged with an earned run. In 6 IP, Tucker gave up 4 hits and no earned runs while giving up 2 BBs. Tucker threw 98 pitches with 59 strikes so he threw a lot of pitches, but no one crossed the plate except for the throwing error to 1st in the 6th that scored the two unearned runs.

I kinda hate to say this in public, but I’m about as proud of this team as I was the Schwarber team that knocked out the Shameus Jameus team. With the struggles these guys have had all year long, it’s awfully nice to see them rewarded with waaay above average pitching in this tournament. Hell, they should’ve beaten the terrapins twice!

Might as well go ahead and win it now. 😂

I vote for 10am tomorrow. I'm headed to bed, so if it is later tonight, I'll miss it.

Go Hoosiers!

That’s what they said earlier, but that stupid ticker keeps saying IU vs Rutgers on Saturday at 10 AM. Soooo who knows?
They will get it in tonight. The B1G has to get this tournament over with by tomorrow with the NCAA selection show being on Monday, usually at noon, and for the most part they have the field selected by Sunday night. Maryland and Rutgers are the only teams considered in from the B1G, and the bubble teams around the country, and Iowa considers themselves to be one of those teams, are concerned that Rutgers might not win the tournament after we eliminated Maryland, and if a team other than Rutgers wins the tournament they will get the automatic bid, eliminating one of the bubble team.

Note: I removed that last statement about Iowa since it's starting to get late and I wasn't thinking just right on it. If Rutgers doesn't win it, it eliminates a bubble team regardless of whether it's Iowa or not.

Play ball!! I’m heading out at 7 AM for my 40th-ish 500. At this age it’s tough on a full night’s rest, but this team now has my attention. I’m gonna try to watch as much as possible.
