1st Inning:

T1st: Glasser opened the game with a leadoff single. Jessee K'd for the first out. Pyne hit into the first DP ball of the season to end IU's 1st.

B1st: Ty Bothwell on the mound and he got the first two batters, but freshman Ike Irish who hit IU hard yesterday, walks on four pitches. A K ends the inning.

2nd Inning:

T2nd: It's the 4 thru 6 order. Ellis is the DH today with Serruto behind the plate. Ellis, Tibbetts, and Mathison went down in order on GOs. It was a five-pitch inning for the Auburn pitcher.

B2nd: The 5 thru 7 hitters are up. Bothwell walks the leadoff hitter on four pitches. A flyout for the first out with the runner holding at 1st. The runner steals 2nd with one out. A double off Whalen's glove in CF forced the runner on 2nd to hold and he was then tagged out on a rundown between home and third for the 2nd out and a runner at 3rd, A flyout ends the inning and IU was fortunate that the Auburn runner had to hold at 2nd on that double.

3rd Inning:

T3rd: It's the bottom of the order up. IU is hitting ground balls against the Auburn pitcher and he is a ground ball pitcher according to the Auburn play-by-play people. IU went down in order, all on GOs.

B3rd: It's the 9 thru 2 hitters. Bothwell again walked the leadoff batter, the No. 9 hitter, on a 3-2 count. A single puts runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. A SAC moves runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out. A ground rule double by the freshman Irish scores two runs, and this kid has killed IU in both games in the start of his Auburn career. With a man on 2nd and one out, Bothwell issues his 2nd walk of the game on a 3-1 count, his fourth walk of the game, and Mercer pulls Bothwell with his PC at 53. Brooks Ey, a transfer from Fordham, comes in to try to stop the bleeding with men on 1st and 2nd and one out. Ey gets his first batter on a foul tip into the catcher's glove for the 2nd out and a pop up to Serruto ends the inning with no further damage.

4th Inning:

T4th: It's the top of the order and Glasser gets a double to lead off, and he has both hits for IU so far. Jessee flies out and Pyne grounds out moving Glasser to 3rd with two outs. Ellis is thrown out at 1st on a grounder to end IU's half of the inning and a leadoff double is wasted.

B4th: Ey faces the 8, 9, and 1 hitters. Ey gets off to a bad start hitting the leadoff batter and then walks the next batter to put two on and no outs. A SAC to the pitcher moves the runners over with one out, and then a single scores both runners. Ey then walks the next a batter on four pitches. A fielder's choice puts runners on the corners with two outs and a GO ends the inning. IU pitching has given up six walks so far,

5th Inning:

T5th: Tibbetts grounds out, Mathison reaches on an error, and Colopy hits into a DP, IU's 2nd DP of the game.

B5th: The 6 thru 8 hitters are up. Ey gets an infield pop up and a K to start the inning and then gives up a double that found the gap in LF. A flyout ended the inning.

6th Inning:

T6th: Auburn went to their bullpen after their starting pitcher dominated IU with the exception of Glasser, and threw 41 pitches and got mostly ground balls. Goforth walked and Glasser was hit by a pitch. After Serruto had a 3-0 count he K'd, and Jesse walked to load the bases with one out. Auburn went to the bullpen again and they got Pyne on a K and Ellis flied out to end their half of the inning and IU missed out on a golden chance to get some runs.

B6th: Ey was replaced by Luke Hayden who had control problems last season. He gave up a single and a double to the first two batters which scored another run. Another single scored the runner from 2nd. Irish then hit into a DP for two outs. A walk and a flyout ended the inning.

7th Inning:

T7th: Tibbetts singled to lead off. Mathison K's and Colopy flied out. Whalen walked and freshman Devin Taylor got an RBI hit as a pinch hitter. Glasser flied out to end IU's half of the inning.

B7th: Cooper Hellman, a transfer from W. KY, comes in for IU. Hellman got a K but the batter reached 1st on a WP. Hellman then got a DP for two outs. He then hit a batter but ended the inning on a GO.

8th Inning:

T8th: Auburn goes to the bullpen again with IU having their 2 thru 4 hitters up, and Jessee, Pyne and Ellis went down in order.

B8th: IU brings in Wes Burton out of the bullpen, and he's a transfer out of Ole Miss. Burton gets the first two outs on flyouts and then walks Irish on a 3-2 count. A WP moves Irish to 2B and Auburn brings in a pinch runner. Burton then walks a batter on four pitches to put runners on 1st and 2nd and two outs. A lineout to 2B ends the threat.

9th Inning:

T9th: Auburn goes to the bullpen again and Tibbetts flies out to lead off, Mathison K'd, and Colopy ends the game with a pop up.

I'll let the box score do the talking on this one. IU had just four hits and it seems that Glasser is the only starter that seems to be able to hit Auburn pitching with any consistency and he again is the only player with a multi-hit game, going 2 for 3. He was 2 for 5 yesterday. The freshman Devin Taylor came off the bench and got a run scoring pinch hit single which is a positive. None of our five pitchers used had what you would call stellar outings, and this is starting to look a lot like the start of last season. We've lost the series and tomorrow we will try to avoid the season opening sweep for the second straight year.

I think it was Mark Twain that said, "There Is not much education in the second kick of a mule". I'm not sure how much "learning" is going on in these early season beatdowns. I know we have to play a tougher schedule to even get any consideration for post season play but why do we have to play these powerhouse teams in the first two series. We could easily be 1-6 or 0-7 to start the season. I don't have the answers but I wish we could play a couple Southern mid major types first before playing the Big Boys. Maybe then we could get the bats going and build up some pitching confidence. Last year we started 1-5 and we never seemed to get on a major role. Our pitching and defense let us down in a big way.
Hopefully the boys will get something going tomorrow!
Go Hoosiers!
