Free trade is the core of capitalism. Push come to shove, most people are really nationalist rather than capitalist.
No serious economist thinks you need 100% free trade or markets in order for capitalism to work. Which is good, because there is no such thing as 100% free trade.

I think the core of capitalism is who owns the means of production of goods and services and that those people are profit maximizers.

Tariffs and similar laws have been around for hundreds of years to protect local/national industry at the expense of "free trade."

We all have read about the oldtime Chinese prohibiting exportation of silk worms.
