Halfway home, IU up 3-1 (radio link)

Balanced effort tonight

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana recorded its Big Ten-best effort in the hit column and shut out Michigan State after the first inning en route to a 6-1 win vs. the Spartans on Friday evening at Bart Kaufman Field.

Led by three hits each from Scott Donley and Brad Hartong, who extended their hit streaks to 15 and eight games, respectively, IU hit 15 times and scored in five innings.

Hartong batted in two of IU's six runs on hits in the seventh and eighth innings.

Michigan State took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the top of the first. After that, it was all Indiana.

The Hoosiers evened the score in the bottom of the frame on Logan Sowers' ground-rule double and took the lead for good in the third inning on Hartong's first RBI single. IU had three hits in the first, third, fourth and seventh innings, and also took advantage of three MSU errors.

Kyle Hart and Scott Effross each struck out four batters and Indiana finished with nine. Effross earned the win, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings, while giving up just one hit.

Effross, who entered the game for the final out of the top of the third, retired 10 of his first 12 batters faced before MSU picked up its lone hit against him in the seventh.

Luke Harrison and Ryan Halstead pitched the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close the game out for Indiana, which won its 50th game at Bart Kaufman Field since the facility opened in 2013.
