Connor Essegian

I'd guess IU is putting together his announcement video.

If Nebraska did jump in, it's the not end of the world. We have time and options to fill these remaining spots and there is still two more weeks for kids to enter the portal.

I think he should of Red shirted. Maybe he wants out because Wiscy would not redshirt him and played him 7 minutes a game. Who knows just speculation but he lost a year of eligibity to get past his injury. The question is if he is past the injury. How many roster spots left to fill. Bring him in. He was solid as a Frosh. What about Mahaney. Long list of teams after him. No IU on the list.

What was his exact injury?

rumor on another board is that Mayor Fred is trying to get him out to Lincoln.
If that happens, then he may be gone. If I'm a 3pt shooting specialist, the Neb program appeals to me a whole lot more than Woody's system right now.
Could be a nice addition if he's comfortable with his role. With so many still going into the portal and more expected to visit soon, you have to wonder if IU is moving too quickly. Are they adding the best possible options?
I agree, Chicago, that Nebraska is the better option regarding style of play. But this may be a perfect example of a player preferring a specific team over better fit.

Obviously, being from Indiana, CE may feel a strong pull to play for them.

Euro, being that this isn’t likely a starting position, IU would be fortunate to have a player like him committing.

While there may be better players yet to enter the portal, I think it would be a difficult sell to them, that they wouldn’t be starting (I’m assuming that Carlyle is committing).

The last couple openings could be difficult to fill. CE would seem to be a good fit.

talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't! He's gotten the top center and overall player in the portal and freshman of the year in the Pac10... you don't wait on guys like that. If we truly are likely to get Carlyle, then we're lucky to get a guy like Essegian who addresses a need and would start for a lot of teams. I understand your thought, but no, you can't wait. You could wait until the end of the portal and then right down the 3 best guys at C, PG and SG and you're not going to come up with much better than those 3. Home run, right there. Essegian on top of that would be a cherry. Add a post for depth and/or development and it's a grand slam.
You do know, the Hoosier fan base is a ROUDY one. Last year they blasted the Coach for leaving one spot open, and now for filling them up to soon with several spots left.

PS: I'm not on the Woodson Wagon, but will root for him as long as he is the Coach @ IU.

PS: I will always root for whoever is playing Purdue.

I think this description fits many on this board. I’m not a huge Woodson guy either, but he is the coach for at least one more year. No reason to turn every single thing he and his staff do into a negative.

A guys asks a simple fan question over whether we're rushing to fill spots.

That's a mild, sort of interesting question that applies to any business, take the price or product in hand, or negotiate and wait for the one in the bush.

But rather than have any discussion, it immediately becomes 'woody can't win for losing!' and 'this board..."

And no, not really at your post or any other as being anything egregious either. So, NVM lol.

Okay, would you care to explain why?

Also, if there are no other options willing to sign-on at this time are you saying you still wouldn’t want him? If so, why?

I’m not saying he’s the best shooting option available, but he very well may be the best one willing to join the Hoosiers at this point (I’m figuring Carlyle is committing in this scenario).

If you have differing information, please share.

I wasn't addressing anyone specifically... my fault for not being clear on that.

There are many posters that turn every single thing that happens with IU basketball into a negative because they are done with Woodson. My patience is running thin with Woodson, but it's difficult to turn commitments from Myles Rice and Oumar Ballo into negatives. Some have no trouble accomplishing that though...

True.
I've felt I gone to far one way when I was negative on our chances with Woodson as our coach. So recently I've been climbing back on the bandwagon. I mean I always liked a lot of stuff about Coach (cares for his players, loves IU), just not always the coaching.

Life's too short, right? I may as well enjoy it.

Coach is getting the (new) band back together!

I found myself in the same boat. Last season was tough. There is at least reason for optimism at this point. Excited to see the rest of the roster come together. Hopefully in turns into results next season.

This is how I've looked at it, thus far.

Our floor for next season, as of the B10 tourney time frame before we know who was coming back, if anyone...was probably early Crean years levels of low. Even with the news that Trey and Anthony were coming back.

But then Malik announced he was coming back. That raised the floor a little.

Then Mack announced he was coming back. That raised the floor a fair bit more. Probably getting the floor back up relatively close, just below, where we ended up this past season.

Then we got Rice. And with the importance of the PG position to our roster, and how that moved other guys back in to better roles... I think Rice raised our floor for next year to being right at where we finished this past year, to maybe even a little better...NCAA bubble type team.

Then we got Tucker. Not sure if Rice was before Tucker or not, actually. But I think Tucker, at a minimum, adds quality depth on the wing. So that probably raises our floor a game or two, and would put us as a bottom end at large type team, after adding Tucker and Rice.

Then we got Ballo. I think Ballo fills another pretty big need for us up front, and...well he's currently the number 1 ranked portal guy... I think his addition probably improves us a game or two, but also cements our floor as a team that should be good enough to make the NCAAs.

Carlyle...if he ends up choosing IU this weekend, or soon, I think further solidifies our roster/team as a comfortable at large team. And starts to open up the possibilities of us contending at the top of the conference.

Any/all of the remaining additions will further solidify our stance as an NCAA at large team. But increase the percentage odds that we'll compete for a B10 title and put ourselves in a position to make a Final Four run. I don't think we could add anyone though, that could actually make us B10 favorites, or make us legitimate final four contenders. Coach Woodson still has too much to prove on his end for those to be any sort of expectation or even realistic hopes.

It's hard to spin his portal recruiting into a negative, and frankly, if he's able to do this, I understand it. He's getting known comodities vs potential. I still think you can't sustain success this way, but if he were to get a F4 out of it and the NIL faucet keeps running...

I saw Essegian play in HS and he has athleticism and game beyond shooting.
Think of Trey Galloway with a jumpshot and a 90% FT shooter! Sign Essegian or Conwell please. IU needs a pure shooter!
I saw him play also , and agree he is a very good athlete. I posted before that I talked to his old HS coach this year , and asked if IU had even talked to him when he was being recruited out of HS . He said they did , but it was after he had already committed to Wisky. At that time he said he was going to honor his commitment to Them .Things have changed , so I wish we could get him this time . He is really a smooth player , and the first time I saw him I didn’t think he played hard . Then I looked up and he had over 20 points and double digit rebounds , and several assists. He just made it look so easy that it didn’t look like he was playing hard . I’ve talked to him a few times , and he is a great kid . Super polite , and the type of kid that you would want representing IU .

I was the one that responded and given the names we're talking about, it was a dumb question. Even if bigger names come along, you have absolutely no guarantees you get them. I'm assuming Carlyle, but those are 3 excellent players. It's like saying you have a million dollar lottery ticket, but if you wait, maybe you'll win the 500 million ticket. Most are rating us as the best portal class in the country... you wanna gamble on better than that?

NO Athleticism, no defense, even as a freshman, not a proven scorer Hurt goods even when you may get someone special. You may find better players in the portal. I do not want to settle for yesterday's news.

It really doesn’t matter what we think , it’s what the coaches think . It looks like coaches are reaching out to him , so they must think he is worth getting . If our coaches think he is worth a scholy , and he accepts , then that’s all that matters .

24 games in double figures his freshman year, for a catch and shoot player that is pretty damn good. I don't think scoring is an issue with him.

For comparison freshman numbers. Mack had 25 games in double figures. Mack put up 18 per 40, Essegian put up 17 ... Mack 1.07 per possession, Essegian 1.09

Hmmmm ...

But, you also have to balance it with your needs and who you have. If we do get Carlyle, then we really don't have any starter spots open, and a heckuva lotta guys are going to want that. Essegian fills a glaring need in shooting, and presumably knows Rice and Carlyle are coming, and must be OK with that. I'd think most guards better than Essegian are going to want a starting spot, so they won't come to IU.

It's like when someone was complaining about Sparks and Walker being bad signings because they weren't more productive. They came here knowing they were going to play off the bench. In that light, I think Walker was actually a pretty good signing.

Just read on fb he is at Nebraska today. No idea if that is the case

Carlyle, Essegian or Conwell, and Malone would be a satisfying ending to a great recruiting class
No news about Carlyle is worrying to me. He's one I really think the Hoosiers can use. Great complement to Rice.

Thinking Lyndon Jones to Jay Edwards stuff. Only now the PG is probably the best player, although I'm excited about Carlyle IF it happens.
