IU is the home team. It will be Indiana St. transfer RHP Cole Gilley on the mound for IU with Stadler behind the plate. Xavier will counter with RHP Ryan Piech. IU's lineup/batting order appears to the same except they switch Stadler and Brenzewski in the order with Brenzewski in the 5-spot as the DH while Stadler is batting 6th.

T1st:

Good start for Gilley as he Ks the side.

B1st:

It's Taylor, Denny, and Cerny up. Taylor started this game the same as yesterday with a leadoff K. Denny flied out to CF. Cerny Kd to end the inning.

End of 1st: IU 0 Xavier 0

B2nd:

It's the middle of the order for IU with Oliver, Brenzewski and Stadler up. Oliver Kd looking to leadoff and this game appears to be the same as yesterday when it comes to hitting.

Brenzewski Kd looking for two outs. Stadler walked on a 3-1 count for IU's first base runner. Dickerson singled and took 2nd on the throw as Stadler slid past the 3rd base and was tagged out to end the inning.

End of 2nd: IU 0 Xavier 0

Taylor walked on a full count to put runners at 1st and 2nd and one out. Denny was out on the infield fly rule with two outs and runners still at 1st and 2nd.

Cerny walked on a full count to load the bases with two outs and Oliver up.

Gilley to face the 3 thru 5 hitters and his pitch out is 48. Gilley got the first batters to include a K, but gave up a single with two outs. A K retired the side.

It's the 6 thru 8 hitters up with Stadler leading off. Stadler was hit by a pitch to put a man on with no outs.

Dickerson walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd and no outs and that was it for Piech as Xavier goes to the bullpen.

Xavier brought in RHP Logan Schmit and he Kd Hanley for the first out. Pyne was on a grounder for two outs. Taylor was intentionally walked and Denny lined out to end the inning.

T6th:

The leadoff hitter for Xavier reached 2nd after a throwing error by Pyne. A flyout got the 1st out but a double scored the run from 2nd which was an unearned run. There was a runner a 2nd and one out.

Mercer went to the bullpen to bring in Northwestern transfer RHP Ben Grable who sat out last season with injury. Gilley was outstanding and it's a shame the error caused a run to score.

Grable balked on the first batter after stumbling off the mound to send the runner at 2nd to 3rd. He then walked the next batter on a 3-1 count to put runners on the corners and one out.

Grable then walked another batter to load the bases with one out, and Grable is struggling in his first IU appearance.

Grable then got a big K on a 3-2 count for two outs with the bases still loaded.

Disaster struck as Grable threw WP which scored two runs as Xavier took the lead at 3-2 with a runner on 3rd and two outs.

Another run scored on a single with the runner on 1st stealing 2nd before IU got the final out trailing 4-2. IU's bats better wake up.

B6th:

Dickerson grounded out and Hanley flied out for two outs. Pyne Kd as IU went down in order.

End of 6th: Xavier 4 IU 2

T7th:

RHP Jackson Yarberry replaced Grable and he faced the 8 thru 1 hitters and he Kd the first batter. He then walked a batter on a full count to put a runner on with one out. Back-to-back Ks retired the side with the runner stranded at 1st.

B7th:

It's the top of the order up with Taylor at the plate. Taylor and Denny both grounded out and then Cerny got a hold of pitch and hammered it over the LF fence for IU's first long ball of the season. Oliver made the final out of the inning.

End of 7th: Xavier 4 IU 3

It was the 5 thru 7 hitters up for IU and Brenzewski and Stadler both grounded out. Dickerson walked and Hanley singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. Wiggins pinch hitted for Pyne and he reached on a FC to end the inning.

Geez the defensive errors my goodness is this a Woodson coached team??? This is criminal considering how well Gilley pitched

The season is early, but a few keys I don’t see. Defense has dropped the past few years and was hoping this would be a focus as we need to get a few extra outs to help our pitching, which has also struggled under Glant. I feel these two go hand and hand, unfortunately. Offensively Mercers approach is big swings, big misses, and big innings. Not a lot of manufacturing a run or working counts. Can’t argue with the overall success of the offensive strategy, but the B10 landscape changed and I’m really curious to see what happens this year. Final thought.. second day in a row Pyne gets pulled late and again PH doesn’t get on. Tonight, his replacement doesn’t make a play in extras that cost a run. Not 100% Pyne makes the play, but I’ll take my shots with a 4th year over a freshman any day. Mercer loves his freshman, but I’ll take proven over potential, especially early and down.

T9th:

Yarberry faced the 9 thru 2 batters and he got the leadoff batter on a groundout. A hit batter put a runner on and and then an error by Cerny on an infield grounder allowed the runner to score from 1st with a runner on 2nd. Back-to-back outs retired the side with Xavier adding an insurance run on the error.

B9th:

Denny reached on a single to leadoff. Taylor Kd for the first out. Cerny singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. With the tying run at the plate in Oliver, Xavier goes to the bullpen.

Oliver clubbed a homer to right center as IU gets a prayer answered to tie the game.

I had a major distraction that took me away from the game, so I missed the 10th inning which was a disaster from what I could tell. We had good starting pitching again but we couldn't hit the ball again early on. Oliver gave us life in the 9th with the 3-run homer, but it was to no avail as the bullpen couldn't hold Xavier down in the 10th. After a great summer, Kraft had a bad outing to start the season. It was a sloppy game from a fundamental standpoint which cost us dearly. We are facing an 0-3 start to the season with a strong Oregon State team up next tomorrow.

One key observation shows some lacking in fundamentals and Baseball IQ.
Joey Brenczewski led off iirc, in the Bottom of the 8th with IU down 5-3. He had the pitcher in a 2 ball, no strike count. Next pitch he swings away and grounds out to the 2nd baseman. We needed base runners and I feel the smart thing would have been to take a pitch and see if you could draw a walk in that situation. He generally is good at drawing walks. If he had of gotten on base, Hanley's single would have given us another run. Just little things like that can make or break you. Oliver would have won the game with his HR in the Bottom of the Ninth.
It is amazing that our pitchers struck out 21 batters, we got 11 free passes and we still lost by 2 runs. SMH. Un--believable!
Sorry to be a downer but I feel tomorrow's game against #7 Oregon State will be an ugly affair. That probably means we have to bounce back big time on Monday to beat UNLV or it may feel like the Season will not be a prosperous one. Ugghh!
It is early and the guys could get hot but starting out 0-4 is not a recipe for hosting a Regional or for making one for that matter.
Let's get this thing going!
Go Hoosiers!!

Hope things are ok ptrich. You didn’t miss much. Lousy defense basically allowed both runs. Had a chance in the bottom and got a bad call on Ball 4 for Oliver. Would’ve scored one and upped the pressure. Soft fly to center ended it.

Mercer’s teams have driven me crazy ever since he got to town. I hate our offensive strategy. We must lead the world in LOB. Our defense is garbage. I worry it’s just gonna be another one of those seasons of unfilled potential.
