WR Depth

I think you can pencil in both Sarratt and Cooper in the lineup in pen. They are going to get plenty of snaps.

Then I think the two transfers, Morris and Jackson, will also see plenty of snaps. I think it's pretty cool that Jackson was a teammate of Sarratt at St Francis back in the day. EJ, if he stays healthy, will also see the field.

I think someone that will see the field that absolutely no one is talking about that I think has a chance to turn heads is Charlie Becker. He played in all 13 games last year and is someone the staff really likes. He's a tall kid that has really, really good speed.

Our receivers have the potential to be really good yet again.

Did he really appear in every game?

I remember the rush TD against W. Illinois (I think) but I thought they redshirted him. That bums me out if they didn't because that burns a year for not getting him in a position to produce anything.

It looks like every position is very good this year including the receivers. Sarratt and Cooper are very good two players to lead the WR; keep EJ healthy and that group will be dangerous. Add in the TEs and slots and the receivers will be very dangerous.

Charlie Becker will be a soph. after being on STs this past year.

In today's portal heavy world I think it's a delicate balance between redshirting talented players and giving them playing time if they've earned it (even on special teams) since any player could be gone in a moment's notice. Giving Becker that playing time could pay big dividends and I'm excited to see him in action this year

When players get hurt between seasons like this, do the players still receive their NIL money?
For NIL, NIL cannot be tied to actually playing, as weird as that sounds, it's basically paying a kid to enroll. So, I'd guess he gets the NIL part of his deal.

The rev share component? Not sure. Rev share contracts are with the schools and are tied to playing. I don't know what the rev share contracts look like with respect to injuries.

Overall, this is probably like some sort of short-term disability where he gets most of his deal until he gets better and can play.

Interesting note - Cig said that Sam West is playing some slot. I'd guess that Jackson, Bond, EJ, Becker are moreso in line for snaps, but Sam West getting practice snaps there says a lot. He is a super high ceiling kid. Played QB and TE in high school, recruited to be a TE for us, but showing some valuable versatility early on in spring. Something to keep an eye on. Thank you.

Only 'positive' aspect of this is Cig can look for another slot guy in the spring portal if he is so inclined.

Speaking of which, this guy is nearby, was 3rd Team MAC last year, and just lost his Head Coach (our very own former RB Kenni Burns) for reasons unknown...; which allows him to move anywhere he wants immediately ("if" I've got the rules right)...

Looks a little on the light side which makes one wonder about his weight to strength ratio but he has enough tape out there that I would trust Cignetti to make a good decision about him one way or another... The really tantalizing thing about him is his theoretical Immediate Availability...

If there is another positive to this is that it happened in spring and the Medical Prognosis is out for the year. None of the uncertainty about We hope to have Him back mid year and then have to decide whether it is worth wasting a Year of Eligibilty for Him to come back at less than full strength for 5 or 6 games. Hopefully with being out all year He can get full and complete rehab before seeing the field again.

Maybe he'll go the same route as Cherry and help coach the WR's...

Sam West is 246 lbs. Must be an impressive athlete to be able to play slot.

He very much is! Now, don't get me wrong, he will not be the starting slot guy and very, very likely continues to play TE for us, but just interesting that Cig is using him there - even if to just get a look at what he's got. West has the potential to be an impact TE for Indiana within the next 0-2 years. I would buy stock in him, personally.

It was a little disturbing to hear Cig talk about his focus is training Chandler Whitmer up, since (cig says) offense is new to him, college is much different than the pros, hasn't been a position coach before ... and then says he'll be trained up by fall, same as Tino was.

In some ways it's good, glad to hear Cig is focusing . But I was excited that Whitmer was going to bring great new ideas and coaching experience. I'm sure he has his own slant, but still, I'd not want to be the new guy and have it announced a few months later 'yeah, he's not up to speed but we'll get him there'. Tino was a younger less experienced guy, so not sure the comparison is flattering.

West can be a match up nightmare at slot for defenses especially is split out halfway between the tackle and WR, TE side between the TE and WR. West can give the offense lots of options.
If You wanted more blocking on running plays You could have almost a 3 TE set, Two Tight Ends on the line, West as a wing back. a WR lined up off the line of scrimmage with one running back. That might force a lighter outside linebacker or slot corner to come down inside with West, nullifying any speed or quickness advantage They might have with a wider set, by forcing Them to play in traffic. It would also look like an unbalanced line and cause a mistake in Defensive alignment

I was very surprised at the Whitmer hire and thought Cig could shoot a lot higher than a guy with 6 years coaching experience, none recruiting, to replace Sunseri and give him a co-OC tag. Only 1 season higher than doing quality control but apparently he was primarily working with the Chargers QBs.

The hire doesn’t actually surprise me. Players that were under him in his various roles describe him as highly detail oriented with an innate ability to help QBs anticipate defenses and reads. Everyone describes him as a perfectionist. Sounds like the mind of our head coach. Nobody really knew anything about Sunseri until they saw him working for us. Both Herbert and Mendoza praise him. Mendoza called him probably the most brilliant mind of any QB position coach he’s worked under.

Whitmer sounds like a Cignetti hire, younger detail driven willing to work his way up the ladder of football coaching.

Sam West is an intriguing prospect. The play he made against Charlotte last season shows you he's very capable.

Indiana needs to get him the ball early and often. His high school highlights show an incredible athlete playing the QB position as well as DE.
