Charge!!!

I know this is a bizarre hypothetical, but I just talked to a very intelligent, very progressive friend now in Seattle. She insists that Trump will seriously try to stay in office after his second term and that he is already laying the groundwork for it (without a Constitutional amendment). I pushed back, but eventually said I would take up arms to prevent that, if need be. As I reflect on it, though, I'm not sure I would--maybe I would leave the country?

I don't know, but thought I'd ask the group. I'm particularly interested in seeing what our MAGA supporters' responses are. By illegitimate, I mean the Constitution doesn't change and the SCt doesn't rule that a third term is legally possible.
What a crazy hypothetical. Might as well propose something more reasonable, such as the Moon exploding or Mike Davis being re-hired by Scott Dolson.

Side question... of any place in the world you have visited, what seems like a nice place to move to?

for me...
1) Ireland
2) Denmark
3) French countryside
4) Anguilla

All are (for now anyway) way behind the USA, though

I’m not interested in getting killed - especially over Donald Trump. So, no, I wouldn’t take up arms. But I would leave the country.

However, this is hysteria. Heard the same things in his first term. I actually won a bet regarding this. Long before the 2020 election, a friend insisted that Trump wouldn’t leave office if he lost.

There were some texts exchanged on January 6th, as you might expect. But guess who won the bet?

I’m quite confident that our institutions are strong enough to withstand something like this.
Revisit this in a year or two and your answer might seem a bit naive. I hope not and frankly it might not be Donald Trump we have to worry about. There’s a super rich guy who after just one month has already weaseled his way into being the headline at the presidents first cabinet meeting and I hear is pretty much in the WH 24/7. He is only 53 and just might be the biggest threat to America before he’s done. Trump is too dumb and too old to be a able to pull off becoming a dictator, but the super rich guy..

Trump doesn't have Brownshirts, and it would take something like that to pull it off. Also, the DOJ, DOD, FBI, and the courts would have to allow it to happen. It seems inconceivable, but I'm no longer surprised by anything he might try. He tried to overturn an election with a mob once, so...

The Proud Boys and Oath Keepers and the pardoned J6ers could become the private force that he would need, and the sycophants he's installed in the aforementioned agencies might just hesitate long enough to allow him to seize power.
Thats why I think it's highly unlikely. Like me winning the Powerball odds of happening.

Don Jr will be the next president. Hell have his dad in his ear a bit. That's the closest thing will get to a third term by Don the Con.

so am i to take it you would defend such a power grab?

You'd be better served worrying about what you're gonna do if the Dinosaurs break out of their secret cloning compound that has been rumored to be located in central Kansas...

Leavenworth Federal Pen is simply camouflage for the Dinosaur Compound you know... (all of which is just as looney as the premise that Trump will take over the Presidency and stick around for a third term)...

I think it's a sign of the change in culture that more people haven't answered yes to this question. I think the results would have been much different 40-50 years ago.

I don't answer yes to anything about taking up arms...There's always a chance the Dangerous Dims might return to power in "28" and show everyone what they Really ought to be worried about...

Eh people are soft now. Comfy.
Did you hear we’re not having elections? It’s just going to be trump again.

What?!!! That’s completely fckd!!

Yep. Total bullshit.

Man. That is not okay. Are you playing tonight? It’s 8:30?

Definitely! I’m in.

I wouldn’t take up arms. A good lawyer is better than a good gun.

I would use the full strength of my very considerable legal skills to stop it and I wouldn’t yield an inch or concede any point.

You sound like the guy I won the bet against, c. 2019.

FTR, as I told him then, this is not me saying that Donald Trump isn't a megalomaniac. Would he do this if it was feasible that he could? Maybe. I wouldn't put much past him. He's an erratic individual, to say the least.

But what my friend was discounting was the strength of American political institutions. He texted me on 1/6 and asked if I was following the news. Saying "I told you", etc. etc. But even on that day, I didn't for a minute think that Donald Trump would still be POTUS 1 minute after Noon on January 20th. Even if his gambit to coerce House Republicans into blocking the certification had succeeded. Still wouldn't have. Even if Pence had done his bidding. Still, no.

This isn't Weimar Germany.

It is a stupid amendment. If a President is good and elections are fair, let him cook.

I’m sure we could find quite a few people on this board (not me) who would contend that were Obama currently at the outset of his fifth term, the country would be in a much better place.

Is there another kind of Dem candidate?

Given Hillary, Joe, and Kamala; that is a good question about Dem candidates being hapless.

However, given that hapless can mean "having no luck", not sure this is how I would describe them.

My observation would be they were plenty lucky by not being challenged by better candidates.

Not the question.

Most of us were either raised by parents who experienced getting sent off to die in a useless war or grew up with friends who did the same. Some of us may have done it ourselves. I think that both makes fighting less attractive and also makes the government less worth fighting for.

The question wasn't whether you think it is happening or not
