would most of you be disappointed

with Mick Cronin? don't even see him on a lot of the list
Definitely an improvement, and a big one. But, because of his longevity and no stellar results, not super exciting. Probably put him right there with Buzz Williams.

I'd be much more excited by Beard, Wade, McCollum... something that to me seems like we are trying to hit a home run, not a ground rule double.

no stellar results? wins wherever he goes. you think it's easy to win at Cincinnati?

Massive upgrade to what we have now. Probably, practically, would be the 2nd best coach we've had since RMK, outside Sampson.

But truthfully, I would be a bit disappointed with that hire. His comments this year about his players were...not impressive. He did make a Final Four at UCLA...but that was the bubble year...not sure what to make of that. He did "revive" a traditional power though at UCLA. But once the portal/NIL stuff took effect, it seems like he's faded a bit.

Snappy dresser. Haven't really paid attention to his playing styles.

Tired of suits and ties (unless it’s Pitino 🤣). No Buzz Williams either. Loosen up. It’s college hoops not Seville Row.

Cronin, while he has shown some success recently at UCLA...seems like the exact type of current P4 coach we should stay away from. Lots of first round losses at Cincy. His crowning achievement, the Final Four...came during the Covid "Bubble" tournament. And since NIL/Portal stuff has taken root, the last 2 seasons, he's seemingly faded.

Pitino protege, his comments woke the team up, look at their record since. he is going to get a very serious look.

you are talking Cincinnati, going to the tournament every year is an accomplishment there. we have been there 3 out of the last 10 years. bet Tenn fans questioned the hiring of rick barnes

They lost a couple games right after it...but definitely, have played better of late, no question.

I'm sure he'd do well at IU...just didn't like those comments...haven't really followed him all that closely... and I don't like what his teams have looked like, and done, in the last 2 seasons. Sub .500 record last year. That was out of the norm for him... but its a red flag.

Massive upgrade to what we have. Hoping for someone that hasn't proven he ISN'T a nationally elite coach.

Chris Beard has the personality and style of play to thrive at IU. His teams are max effort and with high basketball IQ. Seems like the best fit. Stevens and Jay Wright are written about as maybe's. They were great and could win but I still like Beard. May is about 4-5 on my list. Good guy it would seem though. Hoiberg and Collins have won with less talent. Byington and McCollom very young up and comers.

I’m not enthused about Cronin, but 3 of his last 4 season have been measurably better than that Covid season with 26 wins and 31 wins. Plus, he has not failed to make it to the second weekend at UCLA outside of last season. To Kurt’s point, outside of that early January stretch, he has been pretty solid this year. Likely to finish with at least 23 wins in the regular season. An upset of Purdue or Illinois will potentially put him in a good spot for a BIG10 title in spite of a horrid start to the new year. I admittedly am more enthused as I do some research, but I’d rather go for broke on some big names.

Few without Lloyd and aging is a no now for me.
Few undoubtedly better than what we have, but so is almost anyone. He has never seemed to want to leave where he is and he'd be coming here with retirement pretty certain within 5-10 years. I say get someone with a longer shelf life just in case he's hitting home runs.

everyone loves Pearl now what would you have said about him 10 or even 5 years ago? who has proven they are a nationally elite coach? Izzo Self Pitino

Compare coach A & B. Which would you rather have?

Coach A:
  • 68% winning percentage
  • 66% conference winning percentage
  • Went to tournament 75% of seasons coached
  • 3 conference championships in the last 11 years
  • 1 Final 4 appearance
Coach B:
  • 70% winning percentage
  • 57% conference winning percentage
  • Went to NCAA tournament 66% of seasons coached
  • 2 conference championships in the last 11 years
  • 2 Final 4 appearances.

Blind comps are kinda dumb. My guess is I'll pick Coach A from the blind comp. But when its revealed who they are, Coach B is the obvious better choice, reasons other than the numbers you're choosing to list.

Blind comps help take emotion and bias out of decision making, so they are not dumb. I didn't cherry pick the stats. I took the ones people regularly bitch about on this forum. My point isn't to make the case for one over the other. (I don't personally want either, but I could live with both). My only point for the blind comps was that there is a LOT of passion for coach B on this board and very little for coach A (who the original poster asked about). But statistically, they aren't far apart.

Coach A is Cronin.
Coach B is Beard.

I was expecting A to be Painter or something, and B to be Stevens...something absurd like that. But yeah, that's a good one to illustrate what you were trying to illustrate.

But style of play, when they were successful, how have they managed through NIL/Portal...there's a ton of relevant stuff missing from your criteria.

will tell you this a and b would take the job, b may have too much baggage, something has soured with Cronin at ucla, Louisville desperately wanted him last year.

I'm sure I'd get behind Cronin pretty quickly...depending on how he were to build his first roster.

But I just don't like his Cincinnati history...and the losing season at UCLA spooks me...and the complaining nature he's shown in pressers this year... doesn't scream leadership to me.

Like I said, he'd probably be the 2nd best coach we'd have had since RMK...

What are their tournament records over, say 5 years? I know one strong candidate (CB) is 12-5 over 7 years. That's significantly better than Pearl. Maybe better than anybody

You're right. But I'm afraid we're all getting used to it. Especially the younger fans. They think it's a big deal just to make the tournament.
