Woody Finally (kinda) Speaks About IU Departure

I'll give some credit to Mike Davis, Tom Crean, Archie Miller, and Woody, they all took the high road and maintained positivity after their departures.

If ypu want to stay in coaching don't you kind off have too. If you do the opposite future employers probably won't be too impressed.

Can’t really say anything else. Even if he’d felt frustrated or unfairly treated he was paid millions and millions of dollars which is exactly what would be pointed out if he said anything that sounded even slightly bitter.

Several players learned this by experience.

Bob Knight stayed in coaching and did not leave gracefully. Also, he could have chosen to not make a statement, like Kelvin Sampson. I was expecting either no comment on Indiana or a slightly condescending or passive aggressive statement.

This is what it looks like to not take the high road:

"
"Our time is right now. This is the first time in a while, I think, the fans, the administration and the program are all on one accord," Wade said, via CBS Sports Instagram post. "When that happens, at NC State, there's going to be a reckoning for the ACC. It's coming. And it's coming soon.
"I want to be very clear. This is not a rebuild. We’re going to be in the top part of the ACC next year, and we’re going to the NCAA tournament. Make sure you got that on camera … we are here to win."
"Wade’s show-cause penalty through June 2025 means Wade cannot perform any off-campus recruiting activities during April and summer evaluation periods. There are also additional recruiting restrictions against Wade, who was determined to have committed three Level I violations — considered a severe breach of conduct — that include the rule governing overall head-coach responsibility for conduct within a program."

Bingo. Bog knight won three titles so he could pretty much say what he wanted and still get hired. He is the exception.

Knight also, though he was well paid, worked in an era before the massively inflated coaching salaries and contract terms of today. In his career as a coach, Knight "amassed a fortune of $8 million." That's what we paid Woodson to go away.

I thought Bob Knight’s Farewell Address To Students in Dunn Meadows was impressive. Not many other fired college coaches would think of the general student populace, Knight using it as his final teaching moment.

Knight was always all about the student side of things. Donations to the library, forcing his players to go to class, the yearly speech at the auditorium in front of a few thousand, etc...

Expand for the ignorant(me) please.
My understanding: two seats behind the IU bench were always held for Ryan and Jeannie White, only released whenever he could not make the game. When Ryan was hospitalized, Coach and a staff member would often drive up, quietly, with no press or photos to visit. Ryan's room at home was filled with IU fan stuff, all given by Coach.
Ryan was a heroic figure and Coach stepped up into a difficult situation.

Jack S Purdue, stuffing the drunk LSU fanboi into a trash can and the chair toss interlude were meaningless, keeping in mind Coach's legendary disdain for literally all sports journalists, Bob Hamel being the rare exception.

Coach's quote (paraphrased) ' All of us learned to write at a young age. Most of us moved on to something better", didn't make many friends among the sports journalist clique.

As I remember.....

Knight had no time for people he thought were not making an effort. Hamel made an effort. As much as he gave to the library I’m sure he respected great writers. But if you asked him a cliche question at a press conference better hope you put on your asbestos underwear.

Good stuff. RIP coach.

Mutual non-disparagement clauses are pretty common. Say something bad and lose the buyout money.
Didn't consisder that but you're very likely right, I bet the buyout included non-disparagement. IU is including them now for some faculty and staff early retirement deals.

For sure. I'm sure woodsn says very different things to his old boys club.

Yeah put that on a scale and see who was more worthy of their salary. IU wasted way too much money on Woodson to believe he was going to be a great coach with his stale NBA record.

He could have incorporated a smidgen of self honesty. I’m sorry I sucked and that my buddy on the BOT made sure I was ridiculously overpayed. I am sure IU will enjoy success with Coach DeVries rather than the failure experienced during my tenure.

My guess is he still thinks it was injuries that did him in and he was about to turn the corner.
