I just want to point something out that I've seen widely reported. People are saying Kevin Wilson's salary with the new contract will be doubled, and that's not actually what IU's release said. It said:
"The agreement runs through the 2021 season and Wilson will earn an average annual compensation of $2.55 million or $15.3 million over six years."
Average annual compensation. Not annual compensation. There's a difference.
Until we see the contract, we don't know what his annual salary will be. For instance, the total deal is for $15.3 million, but -- purely as an example -- if the last two years of the deal pay Wilson $4.5 million each year, that means there is $6.3 million for the first four years. $6.3 million/4 years = $1.575 million, which would be about a $275,000 raise.
Then, should Wilson get to the last two years of his new deal, he would be in the same situation he is in now, and the deal could be ripped up. By that time, everyone would have a clearer picture of his level of success, and numbers could be adjusted accordingly.
Until we see the contract, we don't know the annual numbers. So we don't know that his salary is being doubled. We also don't know what buyout numbers are, all of which could make the actual paid-out dollars substantially less than $15.3 million over the life of the contract.
