Why didn't Dolson wait until the NCAAT ended?

Much of Archie’s rep was built off of his tourney run. Sure he had consistently good seasons, but that was at a school that had proven itself to be a winner at the mid major level.
Drake wasn’t that.
You didn't get your current coach out mid-season, to wait. The committee did us a big favor by not picking WVU and allowing this to move forward this early. He has his pick of his former players and recruits, IU's guys and recruits and any player at a school who's coach is leaving. We got our guy and he has almost a week head start on everyone else with a big NIL bankroll. Goodman said SD talked with McCollum a couple times, so it sounds like he preferred DD. I think you'll see some roster dominoes start to fall pretty quickly. The next couple of weeks should be really interesting.
Stop making sense and pointing out the obvious. Some here can't handle it unless it's sprinkled with some "IU malarky".
Dolson had already spoken with DD multiple times. That didn’t take place in the last 48 hours. Conversations were had, and the same conversations were surely had with other coaches.
You don’t like the hire. We get it. The depth of the research you’ve provided as your basis to this point is what can be found on the ESPN app. Dolson had conversations with multiple coaches, and he thought DD was the guy. You don’t have to agree to understand why you don’t wait in that circumstance. If Dolson thought the other coaches were better then he would have waited as half the teams will be done this weekend and 75% of them by Monday. People who disagree with this decision will scream desperation, but that last point to me indicates decisiveness from the guy that had all the information at hand.
For the record, I’m less than jacked. I admittedly don’t know much about DD, but what I’m hearing intrigues me. Like most here, I also knew nothing about Oats, Golden, and plenty of other coaches that are kicking ass. Just because Archie didn’t work out doesn’t mean we need to piss down our leg when we aren’t the ONLY school that was able to poach a big name to leave their big time school. It doesn’t happen, so let’s act accordingly.

From a business standpoint....you don't pay a 6 million dollar buyout because you are "settling on" somebody. Dolson wanted this guy after the due diligence was done. We can disagree on the decision....but, just based on the timing of the hire alone....it was no desperation hire. He stopped when he found the guy. How hard is it to recognize that IU got the guy they wanted? Hell....thats a victory in itself in today's environment. Now lets see what he can do before we judge him. Even CMW had that courtesy.....and he couldn't coach.
The talk going around WVU boards is that they’ve had this in place for a month. Interesting even if I don’t put a ton of stock into it. It would indicate two things. Dolson had his guy all along, and the recruiting media are nothing more than dogs with a ball. Simple little morons that just chase what is thrown…and here we are the dumb humans that just watch and coo at them 😂
Who says any of them would come? Wild rumors and speculation isn’t always the truth.
The UK and Louisville searches last year says no sitting p5 coach is leaving even a decent gig. IU actually got a more proven guy than both of those schools. Tells me IU has more to offer than people/fans realize. We just went out and got a sitting P4/5 guy who left a job after one year. Had pretty good resources at WVU. Sure the jury is still out.
Dolson has had over a month to find out who would be interested. Probably figured that out in a week by placing a few phone calls to coach's agents and saying would your coaches be interested in IU for x amount of dollars. From there he decided who he wanted for IU and came to terms. Waiting for the tournament to be over would be a waste of time because the decision was made before the tourney selections came out on Sunday.
WVU fans coming out saying DeVries knew in December he had this gig. Even going as far as saying he sat Tucker with a fake injury etc…wild if true which I doubt it is.
Thanks for sharing this article. I have to admit, it changed my point of view. I as a freshman during the last championship. Now, I agree with the author. It's been 38 years. Blow it up. No more sacred cows. Give the program a new identity.
And if You wait three weeks until the Tournament is over and all 3 of those guys turn it down, where are You? You have lost 3 weeks of organization, recruiting, and marketing time. And De Vries may have a new contract at WVU or have gone somewhere else. And then what do You say? Dolson should have moved faster? We waited three weeks and still didn't get one of our first choices.
Finally some sane thinking. We need to view the overall landscape of College Basketball not just our view from the province of Bloomington. UConn has won the last two Championships but You no longer have the possibility of dynasties. No more UCLA, no more Indiana of the mid 70's to early 80's, no more Duke of the early 90's. Teams like Virginia and Baylor can jump up and win a National Championship from time to time. The reality is that many more teams have Division 1 teams than 25 years ago. Talent is spread further and wider than it has ever been. You still have The UConn's, Dukes, and Kentucky's still get more Players from the top shelf than other Schools, but that in itself doesn't assure Championships. The Portal and NIL Money give Schools a different playing field on which to compete. If a school puts the right pieces in place from Portal, traditional recruiting, and Coaching, They can catch lightning in the Bottle and go from the Outhouse to the Penthouse in one year.
That being said what constitutes a good Year. If You look across the Board, there are very few teams that get to the Tournament with less than 5 losses on the Year. So 5 losses or less is an excellent year. 6-10 losses is a good Year. And depending upon Who You beat, 12 losses and a less than 500 record in Conference may be enough to get You into the Tournament.
My point is keep the expectations reasonable. Neither DeVries or any other Coach is going to lead Us or any other Team to an undefeated Season. What is reasonable? 20 Wins on the Year. Having a 500 Record in Quad 1 Games. Having a 500 plus record in Conference. Making the NCAA Tournament. Let's start there and work Our way up.
It's pretty naïve to think that agents aren't talking to A.D.'s throughout the season. It's also foolish to believe this deal was worked out in one day between the selection Sunday reveal and the announcement. It's like believing all those first day NFL free agency signings were worked out from scratch in a few hours on Wednesday morning.
DD said has much during the press conference. Said that he appreciated that Indiana respected that his first responsibility was to coaching WVU while they were still competing.
These comments kind of confirmed some things I got from insiders although nobody was named. I'm in. Go Hoosiers! Time to win some shit.
Hopefully not the same "insiders" who were claiming Stevens had signed a contract and was a done deal.
Didn't he undergo surgery for his shoulder or chest? If so, that's the kind of commitment we need from players! Real surgery to sell a fake injury is next level.
