Where Indiana really got screwed

This has been a monkey off the back year (many many monkeys), so at this point its kind of all gravy. IU has been playing really good the last month or so even in losses (for the first 35 minutes at least). IU was either tied or leading within the last 5 minutes in its last 5 losses. I think the fear of missing the tournament got in the players' heads and they played scared down the stretch in those games. Hopefully getting into the tournament let's them play a little more at ease down the stretch in close games
that theory could be turned around, they closed out mich and ill down the stretch when they absolutely knew backs were against the wall and then blew game to iowa when game wasn't a must win. Either way when you play close games luck becomes a factor, a bad call here or there or untimely turnover can decide a game. Cubelo misses a layup at the rim, Bohannon banks in a 35 footer from head on. If the Big 10 is on par with the other conferences what we proved all year is that we can play with anyone.

Don't love the travel but don't really hate the draw. IU is playing its best basketball of the year and don't mind playing early to keep the momentum going. Thought we might have been spent playing third game in three days against a blistering hot Iowa team but we were the better team and aggressor for all but the last 3-4 minutes of the game.

Basically will be playing a home game a couple hours from campus while Wyoming has to come from cross country in a hurry. In the event we do win, we'll get a St. Mary's team who last played on March 8th. Possibly some rust there for the Gaels.
If a team plays a lot, and wins, people say they have a rhythm. If they lose, people say they are tired.
If you have rest and win, you were rested. Have rest and lose and you are rusty.
I have no idea which is an advantage.

True, to an extent, but I don't really think that IU blew the Iowa game either, at least not in a way remotely close to the same manner that they blew Wisconsin/OSU/Rutgers games. IU played well the last 5 minutes and had a chance to beat Iowa, but Iowa just hit shots and IU didn't. IU flat out played terrible to close out those other games.

as a fifty-something yr old who travels extensively....I 100% concur.
Kids bounce back quickly.

Speaking of travel...I'm soooo hoping we can make it to the S16...I'll be at a trade show in Vegas next week. Would be awesome to watch IU and other S16 games out in one of the big nice sports books.
I've been out there for the tournament before, and it is a great time to be there, and overall, I really don't like Vegas.

me too...this is probably my 30th+ trip...outgrew the Vegas experience many yrs ago.
And trade show weeks are a physical grind on the feet, back and throat. And eyes and lips get parched. It is nice to be able to charge a few drinks and decent dinner back to the boss. But I'll find a good place to watch some hoops next Thursday.

20+ yrs ago when the Convention Center Hilton was still the Hilton, you could (and probably still can) walk from the convention center over to the Hilton sport book without ever going outside. We'd sneak out of the show in the afternoon (time difference helped with game schedules) and spend hrs watching ball. I actually saw the Haston MSU shot there during the CES show back in 2001.

At very minimum, the bracket should be set up so those teams don't play until Friday. I am not too worried about 20 year old kids playing that often, but jet lag/crossing time zones is a different matter, plus Galloway/Geronimo with injuries might be affected.
Anybody sitting on a team bus for an hour followed by sitting on a plane for 4 hours followed by sitting on another team bus for another hour just might have some stiffness in legs no matter the age.

That's a long ass plane ride all night long. Not everyone will react the same.

so the winner is actually taking the red eye out to Portland and not leaving Wed AM?
I can't do red eyes. Takes 2 days to recover.

Well, IU has its own plane, right? So, it can go whenever it wants.

But the game won't be over until about 11:30 p.m., and another hour will be spent at the Dayton Arena doing press conferences, showers, postgame taping/treatments etc. and then traveling for a half hour or so to the Dayton airport. That means takeoff/departure wouldn't be earlier than about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Flying back (or busriding) to Bloomington would take at least another hour and maybe another separate bus ride to Assembly Hall before sending the team off to their local apartments around 2:30 or 3 a.m. at the earliest on Wednesday morning.

Then, under that scenario, the coaches will have to herd the team together on Wednesday midday to have another busride to the Bloomington airport, then a four hour flight to Portland and then another bus ride to the hotel.

I'm just assuming IU won't want to mess with all that and will just fly to Portland directly from Dayton and then let the team sleep in a bit and take advantage of the three-hour time difference for walkthroughs, team meetings, treatments, etc. in Portland later on Wednesday.

I may be wrong but it's a long sleepy trip either way. It's easier when you're 19.

They need one. I run a satellite company in Southern Indiana and our main office is in Portland....I have never seen a flight that didn't have a layover, usually Minneapolis or Denver.
With the money they bring in to IU; tv, radio, shoe contract, jersey and other paraphernalia, concessions, tickets, parking, etc, I have zero problem with a charter flight.

its unfair and stupid of the ncaa to put a team in that position if they want to do the 1st 4 fine but sending someone across the country with 1 day off is bullshit

This schedule would turn regular "A" students into "C" students.

Miss classes last Thursday and Friday. Travel day today. Play on Tuesday. Fly on Wednesday. Play on west coast on Thursday. On Friday in a hotel and already missed a week of school....
They’re on spring break this week

Agreed, then, if you get past St. Mary's, you get UCLA and potentially Baylor without Cryer and Tchatchoua. That is a great draw for a potential deep run. It would be nice to have a couple of extra days rest and easier travel plans, but the great draw makes it worth it.
Great draw? Both UCLA and Baylor are top 15 in both Adjusted D and O on Ken Pom. Something like 13 out of the last 15 National Title winners have been top 20 in both. They're 2 of only 5 teams in the country that can say that heading into this year's tournament. And we'd have to play both of them. Gonzaga, Arizona, and Houston are the others.

When did those Baylor players get hurt? I suppose if they were playing all/most of the year, that would obviously be a factor. But if they missed a lot of time, the team still finished top 15 in both...which, as I mentioned, is a good indicator that they'll contend for a natty.

They use Cook planes and they are damned nice. Going back to Btown makes zero sense on the surface, but there may be something I am missing. I suspect they are wheels up an hour after the game and headed to whatever is left of portland.

So true. Have traveled extensively domestically. E to W easily adjusted to. Some extra hydration is a +. Also this bracket seeding arrangement will give the Staff a focal point to put a large chip on Wilson's Warriors. I like all the angles and intangibles offered by the draw.
Go HOOSIERS!!!
Who is Wilson?

Yeah, I saw your other post on this topic and you brought me back down to earth a bit. My initial thoughts were that I thought St. Mary's and UCLA were both good matchups for IU and then you get the dinged up 1 seed. I still think that way a bit, but a little less so after watching some game replays last night. Also, even if it is a path that IU can handle, it would have been better to be in the Providence region.

playing at 9.30 in Dayton Ohio on Tuesday night, and if win have to play in Portland Oregon on Thursday, that is a tough ass trip. The committee shouldn't be sending teams west after playing in Dayton
It's all about the Benjamins, period

For NCAA games they take larger planes as extended staff, coaches wives/family, band, cheerleaders, etc are on board.

NCAA charters for Thursday games go Wednesday. I cannot imagine IU not sending the team on tonight on their own dime. Stranger things have happened.

They go on Tuesday. They have to be sure to be in town and ready to practice at the venue during their allotted time.

I assume those NCAA planes will take Wyoming to Dayton, too, right? (And, home again after we beat them.)

If any of them complain, Woodson should tell them NW, PSU, Rutgers, MI at home, they bought the inconvenience. Now take it out on somebody

I agree, the bad thing is that I think we also proved we can play down to anyone. That's the culture change we seek, but at least we know we can hang

That's too much talk about the flight to Portland. First things first.

Flying in a private or chartered plane isn't the same as flying commercially. You don't go through security and you don't usually go to the airport terminal. You show up, drop your luggage by the plane and get on. You arrive and get directly on ground transport.

I used to travel on our company plane for meetings. It was like another day at work except I could take a nap. Had a vendor send a plane to our airport to fly us up to Holland, Michigan. The only way to travel!

Jet lag was only a problem for me flying West to East. East to west with a longer daylight hours was never an issue. We will be fine. The only difference will be we won't have time to recover in our own facilities, but I would expect the program to have worked out something.

Have to win tonight or none of this matters. We will be ready if needed.

IF.. iu beats Wyoming they will get destroyed by St. Mary's. We have no shooters and bigs that can't finish. It won't be pretty.

We also made stupid turnovers at the end giving them chances
