When was the last time the football coach....

At IU made more money than the basketball coach?

Considering that RMK was among the lowest paid MBB coaches in the Big Ten and worked without a renewed contract for years, I’m guessing it was back in his era.

If I’m recalling correctly, he was only making about $250K when he was fired. Granted, that was 20 years ago. But his salary was even low by that time’s standards.

Where have we seen this before?... Shades of Surfboard Fred overeacting, ala Crean. One winning record and SEVEN years with a rollover year guaranteed if IU is 6-6 or better? FYI, the 8 teams that IU beat combined for 25 wins, total. I hope to hell the buyout is minimal, as compared to 7-10 million for Crean.

I was all for an extension and raise, but wtf.

I think he was mid 300's by 2000. Most of his money came from outside endorsements.

I'm okay with this contract length and pay as long as there isn't an insane buyout.

As you pointed out, the schedule was weaker than expected before the season started but they won all the games they should have, with the possible exception of MSU but that is hindsight. The other 3 teams they lost to were all top 15 at the time and 2 of them were top 10. It would be great to have an upset of that magnitude but doesn't mean they're terrible without it. That most of the teams were weaker than usual isn't Allen's fault but he did coach them to wins which in the past IU still would've found a way to lose a few of those.

While I do have some sympathy for what you’re saying — particularly on the duration — if you want to be a buyer in a marketplace, you have to have roughly the same bucks as others there.

The Crean situation was different. We basically had to pay a premium to find a proven coach willing to take on the debacle that was our basketball program at that time. And remember that Crean’s first extension came before his first game at Indiana...which strongly suggested that, once he got the lay of the land, his price went up.

I still think Glass handled it all poorly. But his decisions there were still not as bad as some of his predecessors’ decisions regarding MBB.

Wrong.

I seem to recall it was in the 400k range with plenty of perks. May have even had use of university credit cards in those days.

According to this NYT piece about his firing, his salary was just $170K at the time of his firing in 2000. Of course, that doesn’t include endorsements, camps, TV/Radio shows, etc.

Still, that was a meager salary even in that era.

According to another article I found, Cam Cameron’s base salary at the time he was fired was $150K.

FWIW, in the late 90s, Steve Spurrier was making total comp of $2 million.

I couldn't agree more. And what happened to earning your pay? One nice season now deserves a big raise? Just another reason why big time sports is a joke.

I don’t like it, but what are you going to do? Let successful coaches walk? Even with the raise, Allen’s current salary is near the bottom of the B10.

The fact that many IU fans think this is a big deal to debate shows how small and backwards the IU culture is. You want to play big boy sports, need to start acting like it. This is a drop in the bucket compared to the BIG revenue we bring in.

The vast majority of football coaches make more than the basketball coaches and those schools do just fine in both sports.

Tony Bennett won the championship last year on a $525,000 base salary with $1.175 in incentives.
Bronco Mendenhall makes $3.5 million annually.
