What the hell are they doing using the Signal platform for this in the first place? These kinds of communications shouldn't be anywhere near a public messaging app...I don't care how secure it purports to be.

The lack of concern for protecting classified information starts at the very top with a man that couldn't qualify for a security clearance if it didn't automatically come with the job.
Reminds me of the story that they had a meeting with Musk and gave him the war plans for China. The government immediately denied it, which makes sense. Then they announced an immediate plan to find the leak. How can it be a leak if it didn't happen? That's to find the fraudster, not the leak. They sort of gave the story unintended credibility.
Glad to see I'm not the only one that believes in the "it's 5 o'clock somewhere" theory.

Here is Goldberg's reportage on this. It gives a glimpse into decision making, has some stuff that will probably further irritate our allies, and is a massive security breach and likely illegal because of failure to preserve and discussing classified information all rolled into one.

Signal isn't public like social media messaging. And it's encrypted, so it's much safer than regular cell phone messaging apps. It's great to use for friend groups. And maybe with your spouse, if you sometimes share personal info with each other. However, I would think that one of the most powerful people in the world might have something a tad bit more secure. And also that he wouldn't just randomly send classified info to people. But who knows.

If you and I -- and Jeff Goldberg -- can get on Signal, it's a public platform. I realize that it's encrypted, etc. etc. But that doesn't mean it's not a public platform.
And the fact that Goldberg was somehow copied on these demonstrates the folly of using such a platform. Who among us hasn't accidentally CC'd somebody on an email that wasn't intended for their eyes? I have. I've also been copied on messages that weren't intended for mine. It's usually just mildly embarrassing. But in at least one instance I can recall, it was genuinely costly.
An assistant PM who works here once accidentally sent our entire bid list to one of our suppliers. It included outstanding bids, including our bids and key quote amounts from...suppliers.
I don't know if the choice of Signal as an interagency messaging platform was made by the Trump admin or prior. But, whoever made that decision, something like this was bound to happen at some point. I'm sure Goldberg's inclusion was an honest mistake. But that really wasn't the mistake that ought to get our attention.
If classified information was texted from or to an unsecured cell phone or via Signal it’s a violation of the law.

I am not happy at accountability. I've asked about DOGE. Musk makes pronouncements that turn out entirely wrong. A staffer temporarily loses his job for racist posts, but of course gets it back. Someone emails sensitive data. Now this. I just saw the Speaker giving a version of the "it won't happen again so it isn't a problem" speech. I wouldn't think we would fire Hegseth, but there has to be some way to hold him accountable. And Congress absolutely should investigate. But it appears that isn't going to happen.
How many people that did something like this that were lower than Sec level keep their jobs?
Forget a career person doing something this unbelievably careless? They would be escorted out and never have a security clearance again. Technically could be criminally charged. Probably wouldn't go that far... But forget your career. Over.
