The little I've seen says the NCAA screwed it up. How exactly did it happen? And of all the teams that traveled by air (60?), why was IU the only one it happened to?

Sounds like the NCAA screwed this up. I don’t understand why because I thought IU had their own private charter service.

But, what does the NCAA get right? Just yesterday they let a 6’4 human with a penis win the womens 500 swimming championship.

I’m speculating here . . .
Most times a team playing in the First Four games in Dayton are programs from low-level conferences - nothing such as a program as IU.

Even though we’re not where we once were on the court, we’re still a blueblood when it comes to interest and travel. The plane size probably could have accommodated Wright St or Bryant, but was nowhere near adequate for a program like Indiana, UNC, UK, etc . . .

For the amount of money the NCAA makes from the tournament, it’s really inexcusable. Whoever was in charge of logistics should have been contacting both IU and Wyoming prior to Tuesday to confirm travel requirements, and then proceed accordingly. Epic fail on their part.

Let me ask you this......why didn't the team and however many else go ahead and leave and arrange for the others to leave later? As it worked out, we might as well have forfeited.

Good point about this being a play-in game....maybe their procedures are different just for those teams? What I'm wondering is if this wasn't an IU screw-up. Easier to blame the NCAA than admit you didn't get all the info to the NCAA correctly. Have you EVER heard about a screw-up like this for a tourney game?

Will be interesting to see if the story fully comes out.

My friends daughter is one of the cheer leading coaches . I talked to him yesterday , and he said that she told him that they got to the airport and were getting ready to board , and they decided they needed a bigger plane . So they brought in another plane , but after they boarded the plane they decided they needed to fix something . She told him they sat in the plane on the tarmac for about 4 hours before they finally left . They then had over a 4 hour flight to Portland . When they finally landed they had been on the plane for about 8 hours . It was like 4 in the morning there which would be like 7 am here . She said they flew coach so they guys were really cramped up and stiff when they finally departed the plane . The players really couldn’t sleep on the plane and were exhausted when they arrived . Maybe that’s why they seemed to run out of gas about half way through the 1st half . The NCAA didn’t do us any favors , but if we would have had a couple of more win in the regular season we might not of been in that situation . It’s over now so let’s support our Lady Hoosiers in their tourney , and hope for better results for the mens team next year .

Thanks for the info. They should have asked for volunteers to go on a second plane, and left with the team.

I think I saw something that it wasn't about passenger capacity and had something to do with fuel capacity and weather: higher than expected winds over the Rockies. Reading between the lines this likely meant a longer and/or higher flight path or just much stronger headwinds which would require more fuel than the plane could hold. So sending the players and coaches ahead of the rest of the group wasn't an option. A refueling stop could have been an option, but apparently couldn't be arranged because either it would have been a substantial detour and adding more overall time than waiting for a different plane or that smaller/regional airports along the flight path wouldn't be staffed for after hours fueling.

Still an NCAA a huge screw up for scheduling a flight that was pushing the limit of a plane's range, but more logical than sending a plane that just wasn't big enough for the group.

And the new plane may have had smaller capacity, but just with a longer range, as gear for the band and cheer squad was left behind and sent on another flight

This is the best account I've seen:

Note that the NCAA's statement in the story admits fault. The NCAA controlled the plane but apparently didn't know the plane would need more fuel because it had to fly over the Rockies.

Also note that the story says St. Mary's actually arrived in Portland before IU even played Wyoming in Dayton.

My understanding is that the equipment the NCAA chartered was deemed not ideal for flying oner the Rockies (wind), so the logical divide and leave wasn't happening either way.

IU uses Cook Aviation for their day in day out travel but they were not involved in this spectacular malpractice.

Speaking of cheerleaders what is the deal with all of them on every squad wearing masks? I am guessing this is some crazy NCAA rule as every squad has them on when nobody else in the area has masks on. The NCAA is messed up.

Unfortunately, most won't get animated about that until it affects more women's sports, specifically softball and basketball.

Did you see the picture it is unreal. Towers over the other two by like a foot but I doubt anyone will say much of anything they are all too afraid of being cancelled by the woke mob. Doubt they will say anything if affects other sports either and it will affect them soon is my guess.

Yes - The women didn't stand next to the man on the podium. I wouldn't. The body type visual is brutal.
