Terrific book. . . .and the title fits our basketball program perfectly.

Remember when Kentucky and IU were neck & neck for most titles?

Then, neck & neck for 2nd most titles?

Now Kentucky is closing on UCLA, and where is Indiana?

Neck & neck with several other programs. . .most with a trajectory to surpass us..

Reminds me of "Rule Britannia" and "The sun never sets. . . . "

For IU basketball the sun has been setting for some time.

Many seem satisfied with where we are and our trajectory. In Crean, the administration has found the perfect "leader" to take our program the rest of the way to sunset and mediocrity.

Reminds me of a Knight quote that's so true. Please xcuse me if my accuracy is slightly off. "Most have the will to win. Few have the will to prepare to win."

It's at times like these I wish I could have the perspective of some.. . . .hey it's only basketball.

Re: Relax

When? 15 class isn't a great one and chances are we wont be much better next year than this year because of the size issue.

It's only going to get worse...

Without top talent, Crean's shortcomings are REALLY going to be exposed. There's no Wade, Zeller, Yogi or JBJ walking through the door anytime soon.

Meanwhile, some continue to bury their head in the sand.

Re: Relax

Can you at least provide some substance to why you have your stance? All you say is stop fretting, give it time, blah blah. If you would make some actual points to support "your" agenda then we could have a discussion but all you do is laugh it off like we have no reason to worry, yet we give examples why we should!

When we they get there?

I really have doubts they will. After two great teams most fans think IU didn't capitalize in recruiting of those back to back Sweet16's. Yea I know...Vonleh went pro, ...blah blah blah.

The thing is, teams all over college basketball lose players by transfer, pros, injuries ... they stay near the top and they get bigs every year in their new classes.

Example: Kansas

I wish I saw what you see because I don't see we are getting anywhere ... treading water in year 7.

He does have a point.

Let's say both incoming 6'7 recruits are better than Emmitt Holt. Will they as freshmen in the B1G make a huge difference as young players? IU needs a couple of bigs that are not projects and they are nowhere to be found.

I have a nice existence, a good life .. but I'm one that likes "facts".

Re: Relax

with your perspective and world view it would be hard for you to see a different perspective. Your constant worrying and fretting is hilarious. You have been wrong about many things since your Chicken Little rants from last Spring. Why worry? Let things play out without the fretting... You will live longer!

Re: He does have a point.

Fact is ... things have yet to play out. Conjecture about what will happen is meaningless until it does. Fact is a good core remains with HMP coming back... Many things can happen between now and next season. So relax!

Re: Relax

Like aways u dance around the question. This season isn't over yet so lets not say I'm wrong yet. creans beat work is always done the last quarter of the season :)

Re: When we they get there?

Sorry you can not see progress.... but there has been some from last year. More to come

Re: Relax

I have only said you were wrong about many things since last Spring.... Just saying relax! Enjoy the game! Recruiting has been at work all year.. thought you read the recruiting buzz... He uses all quarters... Quit with your extremism!

Re: Relax

Nothing to admit... I recognize his connections were lost... so what... Point was recruiting has not stopped and does not only occur in a quarter. (Last year was an abberration) It is an ongoing process. A program can not rely on one individual coach for success of your recruiting process. You fail to recognize that recruiting decisions are made in year in advance of a season by most and slots are taken... Recruits make decisions based on what they know at the time. Had some recruits known slots would be opened when they were not at the fall signing period there might have been different decisions.

Is it ok to start to fret about the start of the Purdue game?

When IU started out playing like crap you said not to fret.

Re: Relax

So why did we miss on a lot of the top 15 targets and it seems the 16 class is also a wait and see with already having Guy, Leaf and probably Gordon off the board

Again, you refuse to answer and continue 'happy thought banter'.

Pony up on your great knowledge, info, etc. until then you are the one who needs to take your head out of the sand and relax and watch the continued floundering in low to mid mediocrity. I live longer cause I have chosen to accept my complaining and hopes for change for the better are no longer valid or supported by the leadership over this program.

I can even remember when the Big Dance wasn't a goal,

but an expectation

It's a conspiracy (long)

I have a theory. Take us way back, Sherman. Back to the year 1975 - 2001.

Bob Knight took IU to 3 titles. His britches were getting bigger and bigger. He threw a chairs, a flower pot, tantrums and games (USSR). He allowed Connie Chung to bait him; but, he didn't just lay back and enjoy it. He jerked, kicked, head butted and choked players. He got a warrant against him in Puerto Rico. Stuffed a fan in a can. Cursed the B1G Commissioner about officiating. Berated TV Teddy. 1999[/B] - Is investigated for possible battery after allegedly choking a man at a restaurant. The man reportedly confronted Knight as he was leaving, contending he heard Knight make a racist remark. Prosecutor refuses to file charges. Assistant Ron Felling is fired after Knight allegedly throws him out of a chair after hearing him criticize the program.
March 2000[/B] - Is investigated by university after former player Neil Reed says Knight choked him at a practice in 1997. A videotape of the practice appears to support Reed. Reports surface of other confrontations. In one, Knight throws a vase at a university secretary. In another, Knight's son Tim suffered a dislocated shoulder and a broken nose during a scuffle with his father during a hunting trip. In another, Knight attacked and knocked out an Indiana sports information director in the '70s.
May 2000[/B] - As result of the investigation, Knight is fined $30,000, suspended for three games and placed under a "zero-tolerance" behavior policy.
Sept. 7, 2000[/B] - Is accused of grabbing a student by the arm, cursing and lecturing him about manners after the coach was addressed "Hey, Knight, what's up?"
Sept. 10, 2000[/B] - Is fired for violating "zero-tolerance" policy and for what university President Myles Brandcalls a "pattern of unacceptable behavior."

So, what's all of this? This shows that the Head Basketball Coach at IU had gotten bigger than the University and the IU Administration. The solution was to get rid of RMK and to...ahem..institute a program that would never, ever again have such a problem. You have had Coaches Davis, Sampson and Crean...not to mention DD. It's intentional by the IU Trustees to pull the plug on IU basketball. That's why the emphasis on football and the lack of a new AH. (dws)

It's either that or the AD didn't like the revolving door at head coach and is stabilizing the program currently. The next step will be to move to a higher plane if and when CTC doesn't take IU to the loftiest levels. Patience, grasshoppers.

And it's not that the majority of IU fans have lowered their expectations. It just that the AD has a different schedule than some posters on Peegs.

Facts will be available after the season

People predicting doom are not looking at facts. They are hoping we do bad enough that a coaching change will be made. I prefer we improve this year and next and have a chance to compete at a high level.

I don't care who the coach is. I get tired of people predicting negative things without any knowledge of what is going on in the program. I would trust the opinion of any D1 coach over an anonymous poster on a fan board.

A lot of what you wrote.....

is either not true or grossly over exaggerated.

Winning at an average level certainly doesn't stabilize the program, it fractures it more and more.

Winning at a high level the right way stabilizes the program.

IU has decided that sweet 16s are good enough to keep your job. It's sad but true. IU has everything it needs to be a top program but the coach.

But he did make 2 sweet 16s, so that's good enough for many.

We already have 16 seasons of mediocre data.

what fact exactly is going to change in 1/2 a season where we may (most likely) or may not be in the NCAA?

For all his faults, there was one thing RMK engendered...

...and that is a knowledgeable fan base. When he was here, we all understood how basketball worked, how the motion offense worked, why shot fakes were worth their weight in gold. We expected the best product possible, because we were informed about how to make such a product, and we knew it was possible.

Most people younger than me probably don't have that deep of an understanding of basketball, anymore. And some folks older than me have probably forgotten a lot.

Davis was a good man and a decently smart coach (RMK hired him, after all), but he wasn't ready for the job of heading a program himself, especially at our level. A lot of fans were upset at his pro-style emphasis on spacing, but it's not that his system was faulty. It was just different. He still understood what he was doing, from a basketball standpoint. He was just completely lost from an administrative standpoint. And, while he may himself have had a sharp mind for the game, his other faults built a divide between the program and the fans which started the precipitous decline in Hoosier Fan Basketball IQ.

Sampson was the cliff. He brought in some talented kids, but rarely did they play what anyone who grew up watching RMK would call "basketball."

Crean was brought in despite the fact that he was known as a sub-par tactician. He was brought in for recruiting acumen and academic focus. Both areas he deserves credit for. But the style of basketball we play is no better than under Sampson. Subtlety eludes CTC. There is no room for elegance, for complexity, in his world. And after two years of Sampson and into the seventh year of Crean, IU fans have largely forgotten what really good basketball looks like.

Your choice... water under the bridge now...

Re: For all his faults, there was one thing RMK engendered...

A lot of things continuously change in a changing world, including basketball. In 1973, Tennessee defeated Temple 11 to 6. It took the NCAA until 1985 to come up with a 45-second shot clock. They reduced it to 35 seconds in 1993. I suspect it will be in the 24-30 second range in the near future.

RMK's offense was predicated on making the opposition play defense for as long as possible, however the shot clock impacted that strategy to some extent at 45 seconds, and certainly at 35 seconds.

IU, under RMK, won two NCAA titles without a shot clock and our fortunes began to change when the clock was wound down to 35 seconds. IU has no NCAA championships after the 35-second clock was invoked, nor has/did RMK.

I can remember IU games when having a six-eight point lead in the second half spelled doom for IU opponents, that is, before the advent of the shot-clock and 3-pt shot.

Many older fans have an understanding of what was, however what was and what is have been impacted by various rules changes, the two biggest being the shot-clock and the 3-pt. line. The resultant impact on IU basketball began over 20 years ago, something many fans of yesteryear have a tendency to overlook.

Re: Relax

No IU coach has won an NCAA championship since the shot clock was changed to 35 seconds. In fact, Crean has been to the Final Four more recently than was RMK, and he did so under current rules.

I can remember when fans of McCracken didn't like the RMK hire, in fact, they tried to hire Slick Leonard on two different occasions prior to RMK. That hire turned out well as everyone will agree with, at least for many years.

We dropped from the "elite" basketball schools beginning in the mid 90's and I think RMK's tiring of the recruiting part of his job was somewhat responsible for that. I think that part of the job has improved immensely under Crean. The fact that the best of his recruits have not stayed around for 4 years is a phenomena not experienced by RMK, excepting I. Thomas, who left early under a special hardship clause.

No one takes anything away from the RMK years and his accomplishments, but rather tire from Crean being compared to another coach in another era, under different rules. Neither coach was/has been able to keep IU at an "elite" level under the modern day rules.
