Here's where IU stands in the B1G after week 5:

Rushing Offense 3rd
Passing Offense 2nd
Pass Offense Effic. 4th
1st Down Conversions 1st
3rd Down Conversions 6th
4th down Conversions 9th
Sacks Against 1st
Red Zone Offense 4th
Turn Over Margin +9 1st(T)
Time of Possession 6th

Defense:

Total Defense 14th
Scoring Defense 13th
Rushing Defense 12th
Pass Defense 13th
Pass Defense Effic. 14th
Interceptions 6th
Sacks By 8th(T)
Opp. 1st Down Conv. 12th(T)
Opp 3rd Down Conv. 11th
Opp. 4th Down Conv. 12th(T)
Red Zone Defense 6th

IU is 12th in penalties.

I've been listening to the talking heads go on about how PSU's defense is one of the best in the B1G, next to tOSU, Northwestern and UM, but the stats don't bear that out. PSU is 5th in total defense, 6th in scoring defense, 7th in rush defense, 5th in pass defense, 8th in pass defense efficiency and 14th in interceptions.

Interestingly, looking at the standings in the East, tOSU, MSU, UM, PSU are on top and IU, RU and MD are on the bottom, all as predicted preseason. But the West is almost opposite the predicted with Iowa, Northwestern and Illinois on top and Wisconsin, MN and Nebraska on the bottom. (This is with Iowa predicted to lose to Wis. in their first game.) Only the pukes are on the bottom where predicted.

Stats...who knows what they mean. Like my old Semiotics Prof used to say...the map is not the terrain.

That may be, but they often give good insight as to a team's specific strengths and weaknesses and are more meaningful than the team's record. If you listed all 14 B1G teams' stats without identifying the teams they belong to, virtually everybody would identify the above as IU.
