Tom Allen To Clemson as DC

At least one published report this afternoon that Tom Allen is leaving Penn State to become Defensive Coordinator at Clemson.
Good for him. I'd much prefer to work for Dabo than Franklin. Sounds like he got a nice raise too. Pretty wild that our failed HC is still in such high regards to get two premier DC positions in back to back years.

My thought was that He may see the handwriting on the wall for Franklin as far as His job security and thinks that Clemson is a more stable long term situation. Franklin seems close to reaching his expiration date at PSU, particularly with one more mediocre season, which would mean a complete turnover of Staff

You don't think Tom could pull the ol' switcheroo trick again going from DC to HC without an interview?

They had a mediocre season? Sign me up!

Hopefully we'll be instrumental in helping his being forced out this upcoming Fall... 😉🍺

He may have been asked/told by PSU to seek other employment.
There's almost no chance that happened.

Penn State had an excellent defense and a great season. It wasn't Allen's fault that Allar threw a risky pass in a tied national semi-final game with under a minute left that resulted in a pick and, shortly thereafter, a game-winning FG for ND.

Finally, if I was a coordinator for a team whose head coach gets loudly booed in his home stadium, I'd be looking for another job too.

Let Me clarify. I wasn't referring to this Season in particular. I'm referring more to Franklin's reputation for not winning or Coaching well in big games. Couple that with the fact that He has been there 10 years, and throw an 8-4 season on top of everything next year, and You will have a very frustrated fan base.

Allen’s defense was solid all year long. I don’t think it was performance based. They ended up 7th in the country.l in total defense

Look who sits at #2?

Not Bad...

5 out of the top 11 are Big Ten Teams with only one semi-SEC outfit in sight (TX)...

Another big hole in their the SEC is head and shoulders above everyone else narrative...

Let’s hope Franklin doesn’t target our DC and throw $2mill at him on a 3 year deal.
Good thing is that 2 million isn’t that significant a pay bump. I would imagine that it’s going to take more than that for Haines to jump into the pressure cooker at Penn State and leave a coach who he has a great relationship with… even more so when you consider what he is building here

Everyone is different and has different needs and priorities, but give me the guy who puts other things ahead of the almighty dollar.

Seems like there is more to the story. PSU defense was very good. Would he really go for more money? Maybe TA and Franklin didn’t click.
Told to leave, and then get more money somewhere else? I don’t think that’s how it works. Regardless of what IU fans think about him as a head coach, it sure seems he’s very highly respected as a coach and DC by his peers. Good for him.
Yes, I get it, relax already. I didn’t mean it to speak negatively of him. (Also, wasn’t aware of the “more money” aspect when I posted that.)

Just meant it’s possible Franklin didn’t care for him, or his defense. It does now appear, considering he supposedly is making more money, he may not have cared for how Franklin is running his program and wanted out.

See above^

I’ve always wondered about that too. How much money do you need? And how much do you really want to be a head coach? Give me a 10 yr run as a million+ assistant and I’ll be a hell of a motivated assistant. Some of the lower level assistants that aren’t making nearly as much is one thing, but the top level assistants pay would keep me real happy and in a good place.

I’m with you. 10 years will bring him close to 20 mill as it sits today with a great deal more comfort. Short term money doesn’t mean a thing if you are the scape goat after 1 or 2 years.

Yeah, at some point the money is just keeping score.

I'd think the sweet spot would be a top tier OC/DC at a successful program. Make crazy good money without the microscope the HC is under, all while living in a college town/environment and big chunks of time off in the off season.

Good as long as hc doesn't fail or leave. The downside is being at the mercy of the hc
