Heard a wise comment by Tony Larussa, now in charge of baseball for the Diamondbacks. Asked about the development of young players in the majors, he noted that, once they reach this level, development does not come in leaps, but small steps. His comment makes me think that Coach Wilson has the right approach: the team is not going to "jump" to the next level. The team, if successful, will move, incrementally, to that place.
Last year, the team should not have lost to Bowling Green; but randomness happens. The year before it was Minnesota. The margin was thin, and that is when randomness matters. So far, playing inferior teams, IU did not need luck. Coach Wilson says this is his best IU team. Two years ago IU was a top 60 team. So far this year they have beaten a top 70 team. Wake is not even Western Kentucky. If Coach is right, and this team is making LaRussa steps, then randomness should not matter this weekend, and it is on to see if they can become a real Big Ten team, winning as much as losing in the conference.
IU needs those steps. Fun to watch. Let's see.
