Those cheers you could hear as Gonso was returning that punt included my future wife and me! I noticed Kenny Kaczmarek, #52, my old high school team mate, blocking downfield as well. As you intimated, those were the days!

Little could we imagine at the time that we would never get another opportunity to cheer on the Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl in our lifetimes. I was on leave from the Army having just completed Ranger School and it was one hell of a great trip even though we lost the game. Our guys played great and the final outcome was not decided until about the last 5 or 6 minutes of the game when USC finally put it out of reach.

Definitely my pleasure. The IU defense was awesome that day against a USC juggernaut. I still swear Simpson didn't make it in on that plunge.

Is that Hilliard Gates on the call? Sure sounded like him. If so, Didn't know he did IU football. I was only 2 at this time.

That was Hilliard Gates with a So Cal color man ,iirc they broadcast the Rose Bowl for NBC that year. I did not listen to IU football on the radio until Don Fischer had taken over. IIRC, Max Skirvin did the play by play before Fischer,then slid over to do the color when Don was hired.Not sure how much football Gates did for IU. I know he did a lot of basketball back in the day.
