This isn’t a pledge for or against Woodson

NIL doesn't mean you are picking the right players who will play well together. You can't buy heart. You can't buy basketball intelligence. I think this is what we have seen in our lived experience the last few years.
I think you actually can buy those things. The trouble is our head coach didn't buy enough of it to complete the recipe he was trying to cook.

Two wins against the conf bottom dwellers and we’re talking elite 8 and reversing course. How soon we forget the embarrassments against Auburn, Lvillle, Wisky, mighty Northwestern, mightier Iowa, St Mary’s , Arizona, Miami, should I keep going? Oh… and being owned by college bball powerhouse Nebraska.
We need a HC who can do more with $6M NIL that be a perennial bubble team and lower mid tier conference team.
Added to previous 3 years’ results… he’s gone regardless.

It's comical we beat two bad teams and people are talking elite 8. Woodson would have to beat teams like Houston or auburn to make an elite 8. Not happening.

That's true, but to be fair, we've played good to very good basketball in two and half of those games (not the first half against Purdue and I wouldn't say the whole Penn State game, either). So, it's been against two very good teams, a middling team and a poor team.

I always say I'm not going to judge on wins and losses as much as I will on the level of basketball so with that in mind, we're seeing some pretty good ball right now. I can't dispute it.

Now, with respect to the Elite 8, as 777 said, we'd have to beat teams like Houston or Auburn. There's no chance of that happening. But could you see Michigan State or Purdue beating teams like that? Probably not. But maybe, right? They have a chance. And we beat them. So, as we've all been left to do over the past 30 years, if we crane our necks just right, we could get to a point where we could see that there's a Dumb and Dumber chance of getting the Elite 8.

I don't think that, but I could see how the VERY optimistic could hold out hope.

Weak. Pathetically weak.
You were silent while we lost 7 of 8, with several ass whippings, and tanked the season, so you have no credibility left.

Our NIL investment should not produce a
9th place conf finish and another ride on the bubble.

My avatar is literally in your honor.
Why argue with a dead horse? YOu have your opinion

No nobody from the big ten is making the final four. There is a reason the big ten has not won a title in 24 years. Style of play. I'd give Woodson a 1% chance of making the elite 8 and that's being kind.

As soon as the ball went through the hoop everyone was disorganized. Newton was pressing the inbounds - they broke it like it wasn't even there and Francis hits a three within seconds. We never scored again I don't think.

Yep....that was it.....3 from the corner. Francis was their star and was left wide open. Totally flipped the game like no other play I remember in any other game with that much time left. Basically the end of MD's IU career in 1 play.

Mike Davis is the nightmare scenario for this situation......

I attended the Duke game in Louisville in 2002. Everyone was going crazy during the game and after but in the back of my mind I was like "This means we have Mike Davis for a few more years..." which was bad news. Everyone who knew anything about basketball also knew our success was smoke and mirrors which, ironically, was what was so much fun about that situation. It was the inverse of Cig's success this year. '24 football was because of fantastic coaching; '02 basketball was in spite of the coaching.

Then in the FF Davis ruined the vibe by first going on and on about how much he was underpaid, and then losing the game by going to a full court press when we grabbed the lead with 5 minutes left, even though we never pressed and Coverdale had a bum ankle. Maryland hits a transition 3 and the game is lost.....When I saw that I gave up any doubt over whether we were screwed going forward.

I don't want a repeat of the Davis situation. As a fan I could never forgive retaining him, although I understand that if he got to the FF it would be difficult to dump him if he put up a fight. Anything short of a FF would be unforgivably weak-kneed.
I thought it was Dayton.

I mean.. Yeah.. Purdue win at home was nice but squeaking out a win at home vs PSU (Reneau out) and winning on the road at the worst team in the conference has people drinking the kool aid. Not saying the OP is, but we have to remember who our starting perimiter is and who our coach is. Finishing 1-1 to end the conference season is the goal right now.
It does disprove the idea that IU is on the verge of losing its fan base though. Two wins against conference bottom-dwellers and we're suddenly imagining an E8 season. Imagine what will happen with an actual winning coach.

no....Rupp Arena. It is funny how you misremember things. I remember we played Kent St and had a tough game v. them.....but I was thinking we played them first and Duke 2nd, when I see it was the other way around. We had a majority of the crowd both nights but especially for Kent St as our fans bought up all the tickets from the losing fans. But the game when our fans were wildly enthusiastic was Duke. We just assumed we'd beat KSU easily but it was a tough game (they were good) and we pulled away late. Antonio Gates (the big TE) was on their team and was a load. Everyone hated Duke then and even some neutral (UK) fans were on our side.

Although the balconies have basically been empty, I have been surprised as to how supportive the fans that do attend have been.....more so since Woody got axed but still impressive. I don't blame anyone for not showing up to sit in the balcony.....I've had really good seats available to me and have passed.......

Pretty sure we bombed a bunch of 3's in that Kent State game, and it really wasn't ever a game that was in doubt? We actually lost to Gates and Kent State, maybe the year prior?

I remember coming back from that big deficit vs Duke.

Kent state had us drilling a bunch of threes?

I have not been to a game this season. Tickets, parking, enough beer to numb the pain.... it adds up.

I’m not campaigning for or against Woodson with this post. I’ll keep that opinion to myself in order to focus on the reality of him restraining his position.
There might not be a choice other than modifying the retirement. If IU makes it to an elite 8 or better, and they could the way they are starting to prime. But let’s assume they do for the sake of putting a reality to the question of Woodson being retained back as head coach.
One thing would be certain. No coach anywhere would touch the job if an elite 8 wasn’t acceptable to retain your job. Regardless of the way it’s played out or not. IU would have no choice but to resend the retirement offer. And honestly, if an elite 8 isn’t enough to get support from its fans, then this fanbase is eternally doomed. No coach from anyone’s list of great replacements would consider sabotaging their own careers to try and please an unappeasable audience.
Dude! They are not making it to the elite eight! C'mon man!

Yep, we lost to Kent State in the 1st round in Davis' interim year. I was at IU those years.

We hit a bunch of threes against Kent State, but I didn't watch it, as I had prior plans. I heard about it later. I assumed we'd win. I think they were a 10 seed, maybe.

I thought we'd lose to Oklahoma in the F4. Cov carried us, if I remember right.

EDIT: I looked up the box score, and I was wrong. It was Newton and Donald frigging Perry leading us in scoring.

We shut their offense down. Hollis Price went 1-11. They shot 11 percent from three.

The 3 point shot didn’t even take effect until ‘86-‘87. Steve Alford’s senior year.
He said Thank you Very Much
Shot over 50% on them

Cov turned his ankle badly in the Kent State game, I believe. Got some voodoo treatment and played in the Final Four. Did pretty well, overall, but was a bit limited. We needed Perry to step up, and he did, for the most part.

We hit the trifecta in NET rankings today

IU-54
Northwestern-55
Nebraska-56

We are crushing North Texas at 57.

Only nine conference teams above us.
We need OSU to be no lower than 30 in NET so it will be a Quad 1 win when we kick their ass next week.
