I’m not campaigning for or against Woodson with this post. I’ll keep that opinion to myself in order to focus on the reality of him restraining his position.
There might not be a choice other than modifying the retirement. If IU makes it to an elite 8 or better, and they could the way they are starting to prime. But let’s assume they do for the sake of putting a reality to the question of Woodson being retained back as head coach.
One thing would be certain. No coach anywhere would touch the job if an elite 8 wasn’t acceptable to retain your job. Regardless of the way it’s played out or not. IU would have no choice but to resend the retirement offer. And honestly, if an elite 8 isn’t enough to get support from its fans, then this fanbase is eternally doomed. No coach from anyone’s list of great replacements would consider sabotaging their own careers to try and please an unappeasable audience.

There is nothing to worry about here. While IU has been good lately, nothing points to the fact that this team could make it even close to an Elite 8. We are probably looking at a 10-10 Big finish, to go along with similar finishes the last 3 years. Lots of things have to go right to get that far. Bigfoot can’t get us there.

Even if IU wins the whole thing, it’s simply not happening. IU will have a new coach next season.

This is all very hypothetical but assuming IU does get to the E8, the coach is not being terminated for his performance at that point. He already announced he's retiring. It should not impact any potential coaching hire which might already be in place or could be in place at E8 time. Had there been no retirement announcement and a good tourney run and firing happened then there could be an issue. Or, since we're being hypothetical, if IU gets to the E8 and the coach decides to rescend his retirement, it could be quite a scheit-storm.

Ask Mike Davis for his opinion.

Well said.

I mean.. Yeah.. Purdue win at home was nice but squeaking out a win at home vs PSU (Reneau out) and winning on the road at the worst team in the conference has people drinking the kool aid. Not saying the OP is, but we have to remember who our starting perimiter is and who our coach is. Finishing 1-1 to end the conference season is the goal right now.

Not accurate - the money and guarantees coaches get now , along with IU NIL, they’ll still come.
