Not recommending that those kids get the vaccine is one thing. Recommending against it is entirely another. That implies that there's a net downside to the vaccine.
There are downsides. Your idea of 'net' is subjective.
The former is poor advice, particularly from a person who should know better, the latter is criminal behavior.
I am not giving it to my kids. The necessity for it is questionable and there have been enough issues that have come out to make getting it something that I won't consider (I have it for myself).

What's the upside assuming no side effects? Aren't about 100% of current cases Omicron and the CEO of Pfizer has said the current vaccine does nothing against Omicron. Kids aren't effected by COVID and given how contagious Omicron is nearly all have probably had it especially if they're in school or daycare.

The data is out there. As I said, it's subjective.
However, at this time, with the virus situation as it is, I think the risk of a serious Covid infection is extremely low and, since there are - and possibly unknown - downsides from the vaccine, I would pass.
I don't have young children, but I wouldn't want my grandchildren to get the vaccine now. They've gone 2 years (for the 3 year old) and 7 months without even getting the virus, despite other children in their daycare being infected. I'm sure they have natural immunity by now.
Why would anyone risk their children with a vaccine not approved for under-5 year olds, given those factors?

I believe you are talking about simple us production vs us consumption.
As far as gas independence, it has to be refined and we've never been able to do that on the scale needed here so, again as far as the price of gas, we've never been 'energy independent'.
What happened with oil was the fracking boom in the 00's. We started producing a sizeable amount more and it caught up to our consumption rates in 2019. The gap started closing under Obama.
