The ship a rough go of it in recent months. It mistakenly shot down an FA 18 Hornet in the Red Sea and its caption was relieved of duty. Meanwhile the Navy and Air Force has been kicking Houthi butt in Yemen. The Houthis decided to try and even the score with an intense focused attack on a single ship. They chose the Gettysburg with its new captain.

Big mistake.

Here’s what happened.

About the Ship. IIRC @Aloha Hoosier served as e EO on a Gettysburg class cruiser.

I’m old enough to remember when these stories were widely reported.

Ticonderoga class. XO, for Executive Officer.

Actually, the article I read about the F-18 shootdown said the Captain of the Gettysburg wasn't relieved of duty but aside from that I very much appreciate your linking that blog...

The article you linked that mentions the 1988 Iranian incident in particular reminds me of an embellished yet entertaining retelling of this incident.

He was relieved after the investigation.

Not according to this article:

Pretty tough to go through a Change of Command Ceremony if you've already been relieved I would think...

Here's a couple more:

Got the sequence wrong. Thought the investigation was completed first. Either way, his career is over.

There were a couple of interesting things in the RealClearDefense article that I thought were still classified, but I retired in 2012. I assume the writer, a Navy Captain, wouldn't write anything that was classified into it.

Yeah, I saw more one thing that stood out to me, as a layman, that seemed to be rather critical information the Navy wouldn't want shared with adversaries..., and I don't pretend to have anywhere close to the knowledge you have on this topic...

My father, clear back in the 60's (he was then retired) would lament the amount of unclassified information available about the Marine Corps, its deployment, equipment and operations to his Marine friends at the poker table (running game at rotating homes nearly every Saturday). A whole spectrum of ranks (all retired/ inactive) from a couple of Gunnery Sergeants to a Full Bird Colonel (I believe he even had an Army General over a couple of times (high school friend)...

I would do my best to station myself in an adjacent room, just around the corner and just listen to these guys... It was high entertainment... They could have taught Gradute level courses on several subjects...

They'd needle each other right to the edge but always knew where the edge was... Hilarious off color jokes and biting commentary on nearly every current event of the day, especially Viet Nam...

They were all competitive to nearly a fault but always remembered they were on the same team... They talked about everything, foretold the debt crisis, the manufacturing crisis (particularly how it related to the military) and so on... Anyway, one of the topics I recall my father really getting worked up about was how if he were an Opposition Intelligence Officer he could get most of what he needed from the open sources within the American press... From troop movements to operational specifics... Looks like little has changed...

My method for handling someone who asked me for information that is classified was wild exaggeration. I've been asked the range or capability of Tomahawk missiles, probably innocently but it is classified, and I'd say something like, "they are capable of circling the earth once and then loitering over the target for hours and hit a person in the forehead whenever desired."
