The Music Thread

On Breakfast with the Beatles, host Chris Carter said today was "play the first music you ever bought" day. So I was curious, what was everyone's first purchase?

MIne was The Byrds Greatest Hits, Volume 1. Though it was a few years old at the time I bought it.

Don’t crucify me…..it was a much younger Eppy. Anthrax - Spreading the Diaease. I also recall Bon Jovi - Slippery When Wet and Billy Joel Greatest Hits double album.

Back then we used to borrow from the library a lot. So many great vinyl albums available for free.

Went looking for something new to listen to today. So I did one of my annual best releases of the year so far. Normally I don’t care for the selections as I feel a bit “aged out, get off my lawn”. One of the albums however stuck with me. It reminded me of some of the gothic/punk/dance tracks I recalled from the early-mid 80’s. This Brit band the Heartworms is def worth a listen. BTW, I usually go to metacritic for new artists and reviews.

You may need to forward though the cheesy beginning of the video to get to the song.

I never knew what this genre of music was called...or that I liked it. 😄

😄

"The notable thing about this song by the horrendously named Cajun Dance Party (former members of which went on to form Yuck) is just how many Landfill tropes it manages to pack into its sub-four minute runtime. There is a “1,2,3,4” count-in, shouted by a group, over-enunciated, southern English-accented vocals, that sort of weirdly angular style of guitar that is particularly characteristic of Landfill Indie (the one that sounds like an elastic band being enthusiastically twanged), and a repetitive end section where the singer says one line of the chorus over and over in an increasingly impassioned way. It makes this list, therefore, through sheer determination. – Lauren O’Neill"

Back in about 2003 when I was a manger for a Best Buy, there was an achievement event for all mangers that exceeded our goals. The completely paid for weekend was at Universal Studios. Jackson Browne was booked to perform a special corporate concert. I would say about 90% of these young whipper snappers had no idea who he was. Most were talking throughout the show and were completely disrespectful. I felt terrible for Jackson but I’m sure he received a nice little check.

For those of you who enjoy "Tiny Desk Concerts", throw me 2-3 of your favorites. Every once in awhile I'll give these a watch and find new artists. Now that we've reached the dead part of the sports season I'd like to check out more of these. Watching these gives me a chance to broaden my musical tastes. So I'll give you two of mine. One will be a favorite based on my musical tastes and the 2nd one, one that stretched my musical tastes and surprised me how much I liked it.

Widely considered one of the best out there. This kinda blew me away. Elements of soul, funk and hip hop.

Love this band, and they’re nothing new now. But watching this guitar player do his thing is super cool. He’s got a new thing going, and fun to watch. Also, I’m a big fan of the bass player and her lines. Simple stuff, but lots of meat on the bone.
