The Masters

Can’t believe it’s been 25 years since a Grand Slam. Also didn’t know that Arnie never got one.

Part of his career he had to choose between the PGA and the Open because they conflicted on the schedule.
Yeah, but that was only his first 5 years on tour - and before he had won any other majors.

His first appearance at the PGA Championship was 1958, the year he won his first Masters. He played every year the rest of his career.

dechambeau pretty much did a "woodson" today
He did. His poor iron play definitely caught up to him.

But I thought his biggest mistake was on the 3rd tee box. He elected to hit an iron, playing it safe even though he had a 1 shot lead. Bryson hit a decent shot but Rory took driver and put it much much closer, also put his approach closer and ended up taking the lead back. It was a small thing but it gave Rory a mental lift when he needed one. Rory really managed the "match play" side of things very well today.

I thought we might be in for an epic day where they would battle it out with every shot, then that happened.

Rory couldn't miss with his irons. Bryson actually outplayed him off the tee and hit more fairways, but that doesn't matter as much at the Masters. Iron play was everything. Rory didn't have very many long putts today at all and that neutralized the quickness of the greens.

I'm not denying that Rory isn't a great golfer.

I think that Bryson is more entertaining and gets people more involved, which I think golf needs more of.
No golfer is more entertaining to watch than Rory. Gets himself in and out of more shit than anyone.

I'm surprised it was only that short time. I thought it went longer.

Nelson failed only to win the British. But he only played it twice - tying for 5th his first try. His pro career wasn’t very long to begin with. And they didn’t hold it during WWII, which was right during Nelson’s prime.

Hogan only played The Open Championship once - at Carnoustie. And he won it. He’s still hailed as a legend in Carnoustie. They call him “The Wee Ice Mon”.

And who can forget Mickelson blowing the US Open on the 72nd hole? I’ll never forget him pulling out that driver - and he’d been erratic all day with it.

I don't know anything about the LIV v. PGA dustup. I agree that he's no whining. Taking a bit of a shot, sure, but not whining.

I use to care about the LIV thing, but the Saudis have dipped their finger in so many things sports wise that to me, it's dumb to complain about.

They paid Cristiano Ronaldo $1B to join the Saudi league. And their games get crowds numbering in the hundreds.

I realize they have a ton of dough. But this “sport washing” endeavor has been a major flop…by any measure.

Money can buy noteworthy athletes. But it clearly can’t buy a successful startup sports league.

They do major events for boxing, UFC and wrestling. They're big into soccer and now golf.

They're a player in sports whether we like it or not. Their money will make it so that only continues.

To an extent, yes.

But a lot of people assume they'll keep throwing good money after bad as long as they need to -- just because there's a trillion bucks in PIF, they're determined to be a player in global sport, and a small handful of people can greenlight enormous investments.

There's simply no question that their investments in golf and soccer have been spectacular losers. And it certainly doesn't appear that their future in those sports is likely to be any better than they've been to date. It'll be interesting to see how many LIV golfers re-up their contracts once these initial ones have expired. And it will also be interesting to see how much money will be offered on the extensions.

I don't think their aim was landing boxing matches and UFC fights.

Was their aim to make money on these ventures?

I don't think so. At least, not in the near term.

I can't speak as much to soccer. But I think it's clear that their aim in golf was basically to buy the game by buying off all the big names -- or at least as many as they possibly could. Hell, they even reportedly offered Jack Nicklaus $100 Million to join LIV as some sort of ambassador.

Their goal has (derisively) been referred to as "sport-washing" -- basically using sports as a way to become a member in good standing of the international community in a cultural sense. If they could get the likes of legends like Mickelson and Woods, along with the current stars of the game (DeChambeau, DJ, Rahm, Koepka, etal), then they would essentially "own" professional golf. The competing tours would look like minor leagues in baseball.

They largely succeeded in getting many of the big names. But what hasn't happened -- not yet anyway -- was the audience. Of course, that hurts the bottom line. But, as you say, getting to a black number anytime soon almost certainly wasn't their aim.

But a better question, to me anyway, is how long they're willing to put up with multi-billion dollar losses in order to accomplish something that it hasn't even accomplished?

dude was answering questions asked of him. not sure what else you wanted him to do. at least he talked to the media after he lost.
He didn't respond to the last question with a relevant answer. Did you initiate a conversation? It's yes or no. Instead, he dodged it with the answer he gave. Is it even common to have discussions with the guy you're paired with? You rarely see interactions between the pairings on TV. Now add the dynamic of PGA vs. LIV. Put me down for BD being a whiner.

It was a bluntly honest answer. And I honestly don't think he meant it as a swipe at McIlroy....anymore than answers Tiger and Phil used to give to all sorts of dumb questions asked about their personal relationship.

They weren't close friends. They didn't hate each other. But their relationship was almost entirely professional and competitive. They weren't going to be getting into fistfights in the locker room, but they also weren't vacationing together.

I think that Nicklaus and Palmer had a similar relationship back in their day, too.

the dude was asked the question, he didn't bring it up. again, at least he gave the interview, unlike others who routinely blow the media completely off after.

With millions on the line, I’m only talking with my caddie. No one else exists.

Agree with everything you said except this. I think he dodged it. There's certainly no love loss between Rory and the guys who left for Liv. If he honestly tried to initiate conversation with him, he could have just said "yes, but he didn't respond." All the BD and BK drama that went on has given me the context for why I think he's a whiner and dodged that question.

I heard Nicklaus tell a cool story about how competitive he and Palmer were. They would play Bridge with their wives on the 6 hour flight over for the British Open. Instead of an hour of bridge and 5 hours of sleep, they played the entire flight because no one wanted to be on the losing side after an hour.
