There were finally some questions from the audience that weren't softballs lobbed to Archie. He can usually sleep through the show. Nobody was asking about his flavor of gum. Fischer's questions to Rob were more direct as well.

It is good for Archie and the team to hear tough questions. Archie confirmed more locker room unhappiness. He said it isn't good to point fingers. I disagree. I think it is time we hear things like"Al struggled on defense. I know he can play better." Or, "Joey didn't rebound and I know he can work harder and block out better." And, "Devonte has to make better decisions, but who am I kidding. He has never been the sharpest tool in the shed!"

The attitude that it is okay to screw up and pretend the fans haven't noticed isn't making us better.

A very interesting listen. I tune in every week and it’s usually hard to keep focus, but tonight was something different.

Even something like the lady in the crowd calling out the team for starting flat, and Coach’s response: while I thought he played it well, it struck me as though he was admitting he knows it’s exactly the truth and that it’s recurrent and that it’s got to change. There was still a good amount of coachspeak but didn’t feel like Don or the civilians were going to let him slide through the hour with nothing more.

An unusual show indeed.

There is a podcast out as well with Pat Knight. It’s an amazing 40 minutes of getting Knight back, the players involved, and many short stories to fill the timeline in for the last 20 years. Amazing relationships. IU truly is a family. Couldn’t be happier for how this is working out for all of them. God bless that return, a lot of us felt Knights release of the old ghosts he had and saw it turn to pure joy as he held back the tears. You could feel the peace enter his body. That was a long time coming.

Could you provide a link to that particular podcast, or mention its name, please? I would be interested in listening to that.

Thank you.

I sure hope there was some locker room unhappiness; we just got run on our own court by our rival, who our current coach and most of our players have never beaten. I've been unhappy about it for 3 days now.

No coach is generally going to throw a player under the bus, and what you described, short of the comments about Devonte, I wouldn't consider attacking a player. I feel like I've heard Archie say similar stuff. His press conferences and comments, especially on the heels of Tom Crean, are the least of my concerns.

It was a bunch of babble by Archie "if 6 guys want to play then we will play 6 if it's 11 then we will play 11" WTF is that supposed to mean. He always talks about change then doesn't do anything, anyone want to bet Devonte Green plays 20 minutes Thursday?

We've heard the words before. I'd like to see him actually back those words up.

Cant wait for this new and improved archie vs iowa. Garza has no idea about what he is about to run into!

Green needs to have the quick Shepherd hook.

There are coaches that do call out players. I've heard Izzo and Calipari do it. While these are two of my least favorite coaches, I do believe shielding players from criticism removes incentive to change behavior.

I never wanted to be one of the players singled out for lack of hustle while reviewing game film. The coaches could be brutal and run the play back multiple times. It should be more of a concern with everyone making videos and saving them online. One video of a kid being lazy off a screen or jogging up court should be enough to change that.

Sometimes the old practices are more effective. Something my wife saw on Twitter makes me wonder how much Archie is allowed to do.

She saw a tweet either from Dakich or Fischer that the IU Administration has restricted the methods Archie can use with the team. I have to wonder if Archie wants tougher questions to be asked because he can't bring them up himself. His responses have sounded more like a politician than a coach. I feel that he wants to speak his mind, but is unable to do so.

It is clear that this team is easily discouraged. I would be playing harder than ever after 4 straight losses and in danger of missing the tournament and getting my coach fired.

For two years in a row, we were able to get up and beat MSU and then return to zombies on the court.

Green has not learned much in almost 4 years. I don't expect that to change with 8+ games left in his career. Durham is approaching the same level. Al's defense is not good. His man is often the one shooting an open 3 or getting to the basket. We can't bench both, but Green isn't coming back and is playing worse out of our 4 scholarship guards. I would only play him if Rob, Armaan and Al are not available. Let's finish the year with 3 guards and 5 front court players. Bring Cooper Bybee in before Green plays. If he bitches, suspend him. A look at a few teams shows several of their top players logging 30+ minutes per game.

The article that talks about the show quotes Archie as saying "You can go out and practice every single day hard, but...."

I am 100% not buying that this team goes out every practices hard every single day............

Here is Knight publicly blasting Alford after a game in 1987.
Good find. RMK also called out Smart.

Alford didn't crumble under criticism. Stories from the day was that he was kicked out of practice a few times. Steve's dad was a coach and he was used to years of hearing criticism on the ride home from games and possibly until the next game. Life was probably easier for him at home when he played well.

Players are different today because we treat them different. Life is easier when you can learn from criticism and not keep making the same mistake.

The difference is that Knight loved his players, and the players knew it. You can’t criticize without gaining the trust of the player first. Archie appears to know basketball, but I don’t know if the players are emotionally invested in him. They play hard when there is a chance to get national visibility, but they don’t play hard for him (i.e. on the road at Rutgers).

Isn’t it obvious that most of the players haven’t bought in to Miller?

Archie flunked psychology 101 for sure...remember knight would put someone in the doghouse (provably a racist term these days) then put that player in a critical game at a critical time and most times try kid responded

Write better! This post STUNK! I always like reading your thoughts! But do better! Thanks!

No, no, NO. I haven’t smoked a tree in YEARS. I haven’t smoked a TOBACCO CIGARETTE in about six months. Get your stuff straight, dill weed.
There used to be a liquor store at 38th and Capitol that sold single smokes for a dime. Talk about impulse buys near the cash register!

I remember bitches coming ‘round to my room when I was in college and constantly taking cigarettes off me. One I even secretly nicknamed “Cigarette Whore.” I hope I’m not despised by this forum for that confession.
