Targeting

We've been on the wrong end of so many BS dirty hits without calls in recent Tom Allen years. Then our guys get tossed.

By the rule, it was spearing though. Or 'targeting'.

At least he got his money's worth out of it and nobody was hurt. Big hit. Almost a great play.

This particular “spearing rule” call was designed to protect the defender. Head first hits like this are how players break their necks/quadriplegic injuries.
40+ years ago, players were taught to “spear”. Thankfully, “sports medicine” intervened.
I agree with IUnorth-suspension seems excessive. “Further review” should be able to confirm/exclude spearing/targeting. But, like basketball, also define/declare a flagrant 1 vs 2 (or 2 yellow cards).
Flagrant 1, automatic 15 yard penalty and automatic first down, no ejection for 1st foul. Second unsportsmanlike penalty/Flagrant 2, suspension according to current rules.
