IMO guards attacking the basket, causing them to foul us would be an effective strategy. Hartman playing away from the basket should bring one of the bigs out. Both teams will have some match-up problems.

Go IU

Their bigs worry me but they have to guard us too. Everyone needs to help out on defense and rebounding to win this game.

I would expect

The usual "hack a Hoosier" defensive scheme from painter unless and until the refs decide to call it close.

Painter says he has a freshman that is a better shooter than JBJ, who is he referring to? Must be pretty damned good.

Looking forward to a good game, see you there.

What have other teams done?

Gardner-Webb isn't big and they beat PUke just before the conference started. It might be good to study that game. Haas was running out of air early in the season. Hammons won't play 40 minutes. We have beat better teams with a big player.

Painter is wasting a huge advantage by playing Haas and Hammons at the same time. I'm not saying they should play together a lot, as Haas especially gets in foul trouble, but it could be a huge advantage for 1-3 minutes at a time. Purdue has yet to show this lineup yet, so how would someone prepare for yet? As a Purdue fan, this matchup scares me. Is this the game Painter throws in the new wrinkle? Doubtful.

I will say that the 15 minutes I have seen PU play this year I was pretty impressed with the big Freshman. I could see that with some development with the coaches he could be good as he was rather nimble for his size and experience level. Are PU fans satisfied with his progress the last month? How does he compare to the on again off again talents of Hammonds?

Re: I would expect

Purdue doesn't have anybody close to shooting the ball as well as Blackmon. Who in the BIG does? He'd start for Purdue. KS is the closest thing and he's hurt.
This game should be interesting. Contrasting styles so it comes down to which team paces the game the way they want.
I hope it's a clean game and what a rivalry game should be.

I think you are right. The best offensive strategy for IU would be to drive into the lane early in the game and try to draw fouls. That might pull the outside defense into the paint and allow kick outs to open shooters.

On defense, I would crowd the paint to stop entry passes, and hope Purdue's outside shooters are not hitting. Stephens, if he plays, and Mathias are the most potent 3-pt threats, but they will always try to force the ball inside first. That will give chances for turnovers.

I hope for a clean, well played game where nobody gets hurt, except the loser's feelings!

Re: I would expect

Not sure who KS is, is he a Freshman?

I read a Matt quote not long ago that said they had the top shooting recruits from the Midwest two years in a row. Blackmon has definitely seem a couple of slumps but he is solid.

Re: I would expect

There are shooters and there are scorers. Blackmon is accomplished at both. There are kids better than Blackmon, at one or the other, but few who do both as well as Blackmon.

Do you mean play before two years ago?

It is obvious that the perimeter is called much tighter than what has been most of our lives for the last two years. If that were to happen that would be a plus for IU. Based upon how the game has been called much of the last two years it would be much easier to coach IU than to coach Purdue and figure out how to keep Hammons and Haas in a game.

the interpretation of what is a foul on the perimeter and what is a foul inside may be the biggest variable to this game. Whatever they call...I hope it is relative to a basketball play and has some impact as opposed to someone just making sure a pea is in his whistle. I'm not sure they don't let them play more in high school than the Big today...

Re: Do you mean play before two years ago?

PU always plays hack defense at Hackey Arena. THe rules now are just being enforced..they always have fouled and always will under the Keady coaching tree

What is a clean game?

Are you wishing the refs don't create an outcome in one way or another?

Completely Agree...

I didn't read the other responses but a key way is to make them tired. Run, run, run.

Also...maybe someone can help me out on this. Has Painter tried to play them together? Or did he give up on that after not going so well in preseason?

On defense

make them guard the drive and get them in foul trouble. When they are on offense you need to double team them and hope that the others can't hit the outside shots.

I don't think he will play them together

Each of them seem to get quick fouls when they enter the game....so I doubt he plays them together to prevent foul problems.

Spot on

I was just intrigued by Painters comment and wondered who he was referring to.

Mathias was rep'd as a shooter

Dakota Mathias was listed as the best shooter in Ohio when mattyboy recruited him.

Playing them together is a terrible idea; especially against IU where one of them would have to guard a vastly quicker player. They foul too much to play together.

Do you think Hammons/Haas will be able to hold their own or do you think Painter will try and go smaller and matchup with IU?
