Beyond the obvious HORRIFYING VOID left in the paint at the end of last year, a good number of us felt the backcourt needed a transfer (or two) to help replace the, um, 4/5 top scorers that left (with the remaining kid coming back from injury). And maybe even someone who could mend the matador D against Miami-ish backcourts.
Welp, nada.
And despite mostly good vibes around Woody (certainly way more than the “coaching vibe” baseline set since RMK), I personally don’t think that’s a great look for him (one would assume JHS would start some momentum there). I believe this could bite IU on the a** all year.
Oh, and now Newton (who was def looking like one of the more athletic kids on the whole team, see Miami comment) is kaput…
Sooo, Cupps gonna be getting minutes. We’re a few X fouls away from being run by this kid. And Johnson is gonna be getting like 35+ right now… opposing coaches will definitely be painting a large “X” on X, seeking to get him out of the game mentally, physically, or both. He’s proven capable of exiting either way.
Sure, I hear whispered rumblings of some sort of late push for a backcourt addition… sorry, not drinking that stuff right now. We heard that hype all spring and summer.
So is Cupps as good them PUke freshmen from last year? Maybe I’ll go look at some Cupps high school vids… we got a comparison? He ain’t Yogi… Hulls?
Anyway, despite seemingly addressing the HORRIFYING VOID (although Oregon’s coach may disagree), this team isn’t sniffing the top 25 in preseason polls… and it’s annoyingly understandable. Ready your excuses… year three may be a rebuild year. Malik stepping into a leadership role. A slew of new parts to try and fit together… and this eek! shallow backcourt.
The post-Trayce (JHS) era begins. Tell me good things about Cupps!
