Smith Preseason POY..

I like the kid. But man, I just can’t see this happening. I think it will be a stretch for him to even be an all B1G performer without Edey.
sportswriters are lazy.
Keith Smart was a pre-season AA in many mags going into the 87-88 season.
He had a decent senior year, but was in no way an AA level player that year. In fact, he wasn't even first team all B1G.
Writers chose him a pre-season AA because of the shot, and IU's success the previous season.

We shall soon see. I personally see life being a little tougher for both Smith and Loyer this season.

It will be interesting to see him play while being guarded this year.
I agree. I think he's athletically reached his ceiling. Without all of that drop coverage to the post getting clean looks will be a struggle. I think leading the conference in assists, shooting a high fg percentage and winning the conference or conference tournament would do it. I think Purdue will struggle if he has to be the leading scorer.

And he struggles defensively.

BTW he is Moze

Moze Schrute.

13-14ppg, 5-6 rpg, 5-6 apg... team competing at top of conference.
That was essentially Xavier Johnson’s stat line his first year at Indiana minus team accolades. Didn’t make 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team. Honestly, Braden Smith having a huge stat line is probably bad for Purdue as a whole. Means other guys didn’t step up and Smith efficiency plummets in order to produce.

There’s a Grand Canyon sized gap between 12,5,4 on a mediocre team and 14,6,5 on a contending team, as a PG.

And that’s why I put “competing at the top of the conference” in there.

Smith has always had Edey. But X had TJD. We’ll see what Smith can do without Edey. His reputation is established though, so if he puts up the numbers I listed, and Purdue contends for a title. He’ll win POY.

X got skunked despite the nums plus he could defend while Moze cannot

Hence "minus the team accolades". It's a similar stat line to Xavier Johnson's first season in Bloomington that only netted honorable mention. Smith going to need to be a 16/6/7 guy on a contending team to win B10 POY, similar to Kolek's stat line at Marquette who won Big East Player of the year last year.

Smith was 12pts 5.8 Rebs and 7.5 asst and was first team all big ten. So I agree, he outs those numbers up and Pu wins BIG again and he will win player of the year

Why even put "minus the team accolades"... Team accolades will obviously influence POY voting, especially for a PG.

You did not think Eden would be drafted and now will be rookie of year.
How about we let him play a game before annointing him ROY? I've never doubted Edey and constantly defended him on here as a great player who worked very hard, but so far, and admittedly I don't follow the NBA much, the only comment about ROY I've seen is from Ja Morant.

UConn showed how to defend them last year. Up close and in their face. This season there will be far less concern about getting hurt down low so defending the perimeter can be done more aggressively. GoHoosiers

Purdue and Smith will under achieve. This reminds me when UM was picked to win the B10 and fell flat.
Who was coaching UM? Kinda of like IU being picked to win the B10 with TJD as senior, who was coaching IU?
Purdue has Painter, shooters everywhere, they might not win the B10, but with their non-conf schedule being one of the best in the country again, they will be battle tested! IU's non-conf is a real laugher!

You seem pretty concerned tubby.

Not to worry, you guys will be ok.

Look bud, there's been two PG's in the last 15 years to win B10 POY; Cassius Winston and Trey Burke. Only Cassius Winston's team won the B10 that year...well actually shared it. This idea they are just going to hand out POY to the PG on the winning team doesn't jive with reality. He's going to have to put up a much better stat line than what you have suggested to win POY.

It could be they give it to the best player on the best team. Say PU wins the BIG again bubthe margin they did last year, Smith will win POY

what I took away from this 'poll' was this: if you stretched this to a 3rd team all B1G, counting the votes, IU would have a first teamer and THREE 3rd teamers. While Purdue would have a first teamer and two "also receiving 1-2 votes" at the bottom. Yet they picked PU over IU by a decent margin (when you look at the first place votes). Message I took from that is the voters do not have confidence yet that CMW can take a loaded pool of talent and win big with it.

Pretty big year for us and the IU program.

With a pedestrian stat line? Sure, go.

And don't feed me bullshit Edey or Denzel Valentine examples either when those guys were also NPOY.
Depends what’s pedestrian…
Smith last year was 1st team all big ten at 12pts 7.5 asst and 5.8 Rebs and AP honorable mention AA
