SIU-Edwardsville game thread

Woodson refuses to adjust his philosophy on how the game is played today. Most likely why he failed in the NBA and why no one in the NBA wants him. His offensive sets are awful
Woodson needs to go - with all this supposed talent we look terrible. He. just. is a #i3&ty coach. His offensive looks the SALY - everything through the post and shooting and ability to use 3 still questionable

Goode will not give us much from 3, we dont run any sets to free up a shooter, it is all off the dribble, which isn’t his strength

Rebounding is atrocious. They don’t box out worth a shit which is so infuriating nowadays.
Which is nuts...known fault in the system and it hasn't been addressed.

My first year at Knight's Summer Camp...was Woodson's senior year...and in the dead of summer in the Fieldhouse...hundreds of young men practiced "boxing out" ... so I know Woody knows the drills.

Good grief.

He’s spent the last 30 years in the pros. They don’t box out in the league.

Took my son to the game. Thought the crowd was good sized for a game like this, with a lot of students. But it was a very dull and sloppy game. If the other team could hit an open shot, it might have been close. I hate to say it, but this looks like another Woodson team from the past few years. No idea what they are trying to be. Sometimes trying tempo. Sometimes trying to play through the post. Looked like a lot of confusion on offense. Coaches looked to be sitting on their hands most of the game. A lot of substitutions - maybe they are trying different combinations early in the year? Looked a bit better towards the end with the ball in Galloway's hands. I don't see how this team will compete with talented and disciplined and motivated teams. Maybe it's me and modern college basketball is something I don't understand.

Hey, I'm looking for the thread with TRUE fans!!!!!!! lmao. he's (woody) gotta get better, right???

Actually, a big infusion of how the NBA game is played nowadays would help this team tremendously. Anyone who makes posts about all the old NBA gripes like not playing D, not blocking out, 1 on 1 ball, shows immediately someone who hasn't watched an NBA game in 5+ years. I suspect it's the salaries, but the level of dedication and commitment from players has risen tremendously over the last several years in the NBA. The difference between what NBA teams are doing on offense and most college teams is like the difference in watching an NFL team's 2 minute offense vs college. If you liked UConn's offense, you'd like most of what you'd see in an NBA game currently. Sadly, because I love college ball, it's just way better bball right now. I don't love the NBA either, but my son is a huge fan and I watch many nights with him, and it's just better fundamental ball.

Just replying, Election night before, stress and a hard couple days for both sides could have been an issue. I like to see 14-17 on the ft's and I really love Carlyle's motor on defense. Looked like a Greg Graham out there on the defensive end! Let's see how our next game goes.. I really like SIUE coach. Solid! And I wish Taylor was on our team.

Some good things for Game 1...Rice and Carlyle can play some D! In a stance, moving their feet, pressuring the ball. Love that we are pushing the ball up the floor. Bako!!! Ballo can run the floor and he is HUGE!
Things to get better at...take care of the turnovers, box out! Better rotations on defense.

I think some of the issues can be attributed to it being Game 1 and you are playing someone different for real. We will see if this team improves from Game 1 to 2?

Yeah, I thought he and the white center and forward were all scrappy and players. Don't know where they are picked or predicted on the season, but there were better than I expected.

Announcers said they were picked to finish 3rd in MVC. They were a decent low major opponent.

They returned some good guards, and it sounded like they added a couple high level JUCO players.

It was a frustrating game for long stretches, but all in all, probably a good first game opponent.

My takeaways...

1. Rebounding is a major problem.. if we are gonna start two bigs with one of them being a double digit rebounder from last season then we should never rebound the ball like we did last night.. that was ridiculous

2. There was some sloppy play.. way too many turnovers.. it is early and some of these guys are still learning to play together.. i hope they can clean it up, but with Woodson as the coach i'm not holding my breath

3. Mgbako is going to have a HUGE year.. dude is a stud.. i loved his activity on the boards.. he can score from anywhere on the floor

4. The offense they went to in the second half was much better than the first half.. looked like we started to find some rythm with the pinch post stuff we were running

5. How can we struggle so badly with BLOBs.. we turned it over twice and should've turned it over 3 times because we couldn't get the ball in bounds from under our own basket against SIUE.. that's infuriating to me

6. There is not a lack of talent on this team.. if this team isn't geling and playing clean basketball by the end of the season it is coaching malpractice at this point

Going to be honest... how the F did Ballo ever score or play for Zona? Because he is getting eaten up by some chump from SIUE all night.
He's being misused. He is not a low block scorer, doesn't have any moves. If used correctly he would screen, rebound, screen, defend, screen, rim run, screen, roll, screen after screening and then screen again. In that kind of role, he excelled at Zona.
