You'd think that the flagship athletics program at IU would be valued and amplified and cared for. It's been part of the state's and the University's brand and culture and marketing forever. I thought those things mattered to the advantage of both the state and the University. Yet from any outside perspective, it's not. It's in total disarray, yet there are zero indications that anyone in charge cares. It's not just this year, it's been roughly 30 years of this. It's not just the wins and losses; it's the utter lack of any foundational principle or set of standards or clarity of purpose and accountability.
I and we have been saying this for decades and really nothing changes.
And the individual decision-makers can and do "speak" in a number of ways. I and many of us have written about this multiple times year after year after year after year and way more than that.
The silence is deafening. If the flagship program has deep value, you act with clarity, urgency, and consistency.
The decision-maker jobs are hard, there are lots of constituencies, there are financial implications. All those things and more are true. But I think a well-run organization neither compromises its standards nor leaves any doubts as to what those standards are. Yet here we are and have been for 30 years. Deeply disappointing as an alumnus, as a Hoosier, and as a parent.
