Shoeless Joe and Pete Rose reinstated by MLB. Will be eligible for the HOF.

Pete said, before he died, that if he couldn't get in while alive then he would not want to get in later.

I have always wanted him in there, as a Reds fan, but I can also see abiding by his wishes.

I remember being in school on the East coast in 1985 and driving around in my car trying to get WLW to come in. I heard Marty & Joe call #4192 over the static

Until the corked bat issue came up, I was all in favor of him getting in. It became a bridge too far at that point. But now that he has passed, it really doesn't matter.

I can see the point, but I’ve always wondered how many thousands of bats were corked over the years.

And we took greenies back in the day.

There were, but as a second strike it means more. He used up his get out of jail free.

If I were on the committee and voted for Rose I would feel I would need to vote for Bonds, McGuire, Sosa, Schilling.

KC fine = $0.35. McGwire.

Rose hit “only” 160 HRs, the great majority in the first nine years of his career. Now, did a corked bat help with his hitting balls in the gaps or ground balls between first and second? Who knows?

I guess I look at corked bats like batting gloves or torpedo bats.

Bats break all the time and so you're going to get nailed if you use them in games, so part of me can buy the story that Pete had some corked for using in batting practice and fungos. But maybe I'm giving him too much credit.

It does seem less severe to me than having syringes full of steroids stuck in your arse.

A little late.

Pisses me off they both should have been reinstated and put in the HOF long ago.

The next thing that should happen is the steroid users should come off the black list and get voted to HOF where they have the stats.

We’ll just have to disagree on your second point. Bonds, Sosa, McGwire should never get in.

Give me Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Mantle, Williams, Ruth, Musial, Gehrig.

Interesting stat - Gehrig had 173 RBIs in 1927, batting 60 times after Ruth had cleared the bases.

Pete could have made a fortune being a spokesperson for Fan Duel or Draft Kings. Too bad sports fan ling didn’t become legal 10 years earlier.

Who wouldn’t want to use the online sports book Pete Rose endorsed?

I don't not want Bonds, Sosa, McGuire, Clemons in. But if we let Pete in I don't know how we keep them out.

Bonds was practically guaranteed, until he took the PEDs. It is his own fault. A lot of players get in who do not hit home runs.
I remember teaching and reading a book to the kids about Barry Bonds and what a great person he was, obstacles he overcame, etc. We did book reports on sports figures and several picked him, dressed as him, etc. Same year the allegations came out. We were all really disappointed.

Lance Armstrong in biking was also a huge disappointment.

serious question, what obstacles did Bonds overcome, his dad was a mlb player for 15 years his godfather was Wille mays, always assumed he had a pretty privileged life, and was always rumored to be an arrogant prick.

It's Rose's own fault, too. And Joe's. And lots of others...many who are already in.

Bonds was way more than just a home run hitter. And his excellence isn't limited to a small time period or just in using steroids.
Agree but why not other 3?
The easiest argument among those 3 is Clemens. I'm not a fan at all, but his case is similar to Bonds (and to a lesser degree to Rose). Next would be McGwire, who doesn't feel like a slam dunk to me. His career WAR is below guys like Lou Whitaker and Carlos Beltran, who aren't in the Hall, and his impact doesn't feel comparable to guys like Bonds or Clemens (or ARod and Rafael Palmeiro). Sosa is even a step down from that tier to me.

I don’t remember honestly. He probably wrote the book…

He might have been viewed a little more sympathetically with his cancer and all had he not been so obstinate and defiant with his denials. He should have come clean early.
Once he started lying he had to lie until the bloody end.

During those times, everyone in the TDF was probably dirty.

The summer of 98 was some of the best and must watch baseball I can remember.

You're downplaying Mac and Sosa's impact on baseball.

Okay. Point taken. His impact is comparable to Rafael Palmeiro, but when you look at their numbers most are weighed towards Palmeiro. Approaching twice as many hits, 400 more RBIs, 500 more runs scored, better WAR, and was a better defensive first baseman. McGwire has 14 more home runs and a better OPS/OPS+.

I wouldn't have a problem with McGwire being in the Hall just as I wouldn't have a problem with Palmeiro in the Hall. I think Palmeiro is more deserving, but right now the voters have it out for both of them.

Sosa seems like one of the charter members of the Hall of Very Good to me, but I get that a lot of late 90's Cubs fans love the guy.

Not really. That home run chase was awesome, but I don't think Roger Maris should be in the Hall of Fame because he hit 61 one year (which is not to say that Roger Maris wasn't a great baseball player). Sammy Sosa is MUCH closer to Roger Maris than he is to Barry Bonds in his HOF case.

I love Sosa, but he's not one of my top 5 favorite Cubs of all time. If you don't take into account the juice, Sosa is much more than very good. But without it, he's a little worse than Minny Minoso.

Re McGwire, I think he is the man most responsible for the prevalence of steroids in baseball. The Cardinals ruin everything.

Yadier Molina is still a punk.
