The basketball program is so scrutinized (not that I agree with such) that everyone knows everything about every player's behavior. So when nine football players don't suit up for the opening game and it is announced just before game time it is no wonder that everyone is perplexed. And then when the defense lays an egg - again- it is reasonable that frustrations boil over. And after the almost- debacle, still nothing is said about the suspensions.

There must be a number of potential recruits on the sideline waiting to see how this season plays out. Last week a recruit said something to the effect that he had reservations about the coaches control of behavioral issues at Indiana. And then nine players are suspended. And then there is no explanation! And when asked by reporters after the game, there still is no explanation!

This is not a quality program that can just reload. Its closer to a Texas A&M team that had to take players out of the stands at halftime about a hundred years ago. Speaking of Kool-Aid, clearly the local press is drinking it up when they say the defensive line is deep.

CKW put together a couple top-40 recruiting classes but there is no evidence that he has recruited an adequate back-up quarterback let alone an heir-apparent for Sudfeld. Every year IU brings in 2-star defensive back recruits what do not have any offers from big-time programs with the exception of A.A. - not that I want to see any more AA-type characters in the program. And every year the fans drink the Kool-Aid about the turnaround the defense is going to make.

At the very least CKW needs to meet with the media and explain what is going on with the control of the program. Is it unraveling? Are any players down to their last strike? Are the suspended players going to suit-up next week? Is there going to be another similar announcement 15 minutes before the game next week?

CKW made his own bed when he came in with tough talk about winning now and that past was the past.
The defensive players are young, they are inexperienced, they were suspended....... nobody want to hear it. Indiana has been too bad for too long.

I can't wait to listen to this week's podcast.

A. Your comment about DB recruits and offers is just false. The commit lists are there for you to look at.

B. Wilson isn't going to hold a dramatic state of the Union address after starting 1-0.

C. Are people really not familiar with these "failure to live up to team expectations" announcements? These happen before the first game every year.

I don't think that the suspensions are related to a lack of control as much as they are a reflection of the increased accountability for inappropriate actions by which Wilson forces players to abide.

In the past players could skip classes, miss workouts, miss meetings, fail drug tests etc. with little to no repercussions (they would have to run extra, do a morning punishment workout, or something along those lines). Wilson stated that the suspensions were due to infractions that were made throughout the offseason. Rather than hitting players with meaningless physical punishment, he hit them where it hurts...by embarrassing them and their families by forcing them to miss a game, thereby making sure they don't make the same mistake in the future.

You can't break the rules under Wilson and have it swept under the rug. The suspensions were an example of increased accountability...not decreased control.

Perhaps if Coach Crean would have laid down the law with suspensions the same jackasses wouldn't make the same mistakes time and time again.

Coach Wison (or Coach Crean or any other coach for that matter) doesn't owe you or anyone else an explanation for anything.

Of course I am not owed anything. But the reality is that public relations is an important job of the athletic department. If you don't believe me ask Steve Patterson who was the AD at Texas until yesterday. A program that can't fill its stadium and hasn't fielded a team that wins national respect in decades should not be aloof with its fan base.

My opinion is the fans need not know everything. If a kids is benched for a game (check that, suspended/ not allowed to participate) because he fails to attend a team meeting, a workout or skipped classes, that is an issue for the player and the program and not information I am entitled to. Failure to have a press conference detailing all infractions does not hurt IU's PR, at least not with me. I would expect that to be handled by coach, and maybe AD, and be done in-house. I don't need that information. It will not assist the young man, in any way, if that information is presented to me and the rest of the fan base. There are rules, you violate the rules and you will be benched. Get it fixed and we move on and there is no monkey on your back forever from fans obsessing over a benching for missed team meeting or whatever. Seems appropriate.

PR is important. Placating every whiney fan isn't.

Patterson pissed off donors and ruined the culture of the athletics department.

You're comparing apples and cheeseburgers.

Please do a little more research. Patterson had offended the UT BIG TIME donors and then topped it off with poor performances by the football and basketball teams. I'll grant you that Texas may be an appropriate comparison for an athletic department with serious issues. We hit critical mass with Robbe's address, we'll see how it plays out for all programs.

I'm trying to remember all of the schools this year that had suspended players for the first game (and there were several) who held full disclosure pressers?
