If this team is gonna do any damage Scoop has to come on. I thought he would be 10-15 PPG for us this year, and be able to be a scorer off the bounce. He should have been better than everyone on PSU last night.

He has a really strong mindset and family support. Hopefully this pisses him off and he stays in the gym till his hands bleed. We need an alpha scorer on this team.

It’s not all on him but I agree with your sentiment. We are in desperate need of someone who can create off the dribble and provide scoring. TJD will 100% be held in check by most Big Ten teams. I am not saying he won’t get his but teams will play good enough defense on him that he won’t be able to get 30+ and carry us to victories alone. Someone else needs to consistently get 3-5 buckets a game on their own and not depend on a kick out and poor rotations to do it.

People are always so down on Galloway but his 2-3 forced fast break layups helped us last year and we need some of that again. Hopefully that with Bates coming around can make us a much more difficult team to beat as the year goes on.

I think you can put the pressure on Tamar. His back can take it where others would break. I would start riding Tamar now. He will rise IMO.

The backcourt is very avg, Bates isn’t the only issue. Parker’s play has been equally disappointing of late. Parker 32 min and 4 shot attempts is unacceptable but has been the norm. The upperclassman have reached their respective limits and it’s time to build for next season. I don’t see a tournament team this season and investing more into players like
Miller, Parker, Johnson, Phin are proving to be bad. the starters played heavy min, all seasoned upperclassman and IU looked like crap.
Lander
Bates
Jordan should get the start over Johnson Parker and Miller against Osu

Agree. I think it’s time to put him in the starting lineup and let one of the spot up shooters go to the 2nd team.

I would go Parker and Tamar. More off the bounce dribble drive helps the shooters as well. Need guys to help in order to free up wing shooters.

I agree. The only question then becomes do we have enough shooting if Bates is penetrating. Stewart will be there but it will put pressure on Johnson and even Race to knock down open shots. The help will likely come from one of their guys.

Time to see what happens though.

I thought Jordan was going to be big time this year??
Geronimo is showing flashes now. Learning to play within himself is still a bit of an issue.

He looks like the best rebounder on our team right now though.

He should be getting much more PT. If you can't see that you are blind. Comes in drills a 8 footer after not touching a ball for 30 mins. Hit another 6 footer in the lane with supreme confidence, and jumps out of the gym on rebounds.
You might want to take that issue up with Woody.

He’s pulled him out of games and benched him for the remainder. Come in, perform well…..your reward is sitting the remainder while Mr. “Out Of Control” handles the rest of your minutes.

Woody doesn't trust the bench at all in the second half. Almost always just rides the starters and Phin. I am not a fan.

This year is about developing players. The underclassmen should all be getting more minutes.

X and PS aren't getting anyone to where IU rightfully should be so **** the record this year and develop the future.

Very few, if any of us, have the luxury of watching them in practice. There's obviously something happening there, that isn't happening in games. Because the older kids that Woody is riding late in games, sure aren't making plays either. So, just from the game action, I don't see why Coach would trust X, Miller, Parker, etc... any more than Anthony, Tamar, Jordan, heck even Khristian.

And you don't have to hockey line sub them all in at the same time. Jordan should be playing alongside either TJD or Race, or both. Tamar should be playing alongside either Rob or X. Anthony should be seeing more minutes playing with some of the older kids. And while I've been very skeptical on whether Khristian will ever live up to his hype, in the minutes he's gotten, he hasn't been THAT much worse than Rob and/or X. Heck, Rob got lit up yesterday by Sessoms. Rob happened to play fairly well offensively, but if he's not gonna be a lock down defender, I don't see much reason not to give Khristian some of his minutes. As for X, he takes bad shots and turns it over as much ore more than Khristian ever has. So again, just don't see the reasoning for riding the older guys so much from game action.

Actually...assuming Jordan and Tamar are putting forth effort in practices, I think its basically Negligence to not play them extended minutes right now. There has to be something going on in practices causing it. If I knew there wasn't, and he just "isn't comfortable" with them playing...that would be a pretty big red flag for me.

Our guards are pathetic. Tamar can’t throw it in the ocean, needs to create for others and stop shooting.

After a game like PSU, I think Woody should really look at playing the most talented kids, regardless of age, or his comfort level with them.

TJD, Race, Jordan, Tamar, Xavier, Parker, Anthony, Khristian...

Let Miller and Rob come off the bench as "steadying" influences if needed. But make sure you go back to the guys that are actually capable of making High Major plays.

It'd be different if we had beaten anyone this season of note, with the older guys playing big minutes.

Parker. Tamar. Leal. XJ or Lander. TJD.

Kopp can sub for Parker. Both are one dimensional.

CTC was by no means the answer, but he would create and offense for Kopp and Parker to get catch and shoot 3s.

How Leal isn’t getting more PT for Kopp is questionable to me.

Do our substitution patterns more closely mimic an NBA game?

I would double JG's minutes. And was thinking, while watching that game yesterday, that Parker and Kopp on the court together is starting to hurt us. Neither are stellar on defense, so we need more offensive production. If a team throws a zone at us, and we can create open look 3s by moving the ball (ie 2nd half Cuse game) then they are dangerous. But when a team plays good half court man-to-man against us, their combined presence on the court is hurting us. Neither can take their guys to the hole or create their own shots. They become very easy to guard. Maybe that's where Bates comes in...give him a game or two as a starter in place of PS/Kopp, and tell him to be aggressive on offense.

Seems like they do...with "2nd unit" type play at specific times in games. The only problem with that is NBA teams do it because they play 82 games, and their games are 48 minutes long. Its more about managing their bodies, than any specific game strategy.

In college, with less games per week, less games overall, and only 40 minute games...substitution patterns should be very different.

In the end, you want your best players playing the most minutes. And maybe he feels that's what he's doing. But it sure isn't producing very good play overall, especially later in games.

Agreed. One other thing is that in the NBA the more scripted minutes makes sense given the fact that everyone is a pro. With college it’s not all about matchups, sometimes you just need to make a point, send a message, or settle someone down.

I would much rather see someone pulled because of their play, not just because it’s the 12 minute mark.

I noticed the '2nd unit' approach from the get-go....and honestly, not a big fan of it at the NCAA level. I've seen lineups on the court in the 10 min-5min point of the first half that seem to be very lacking on offense, while at least 4 of our starters are resting.

it’s not just the difference in number of games / minutes. It’s also days off. I could see needing to play a second unit some number of minutes if we flew to LA last night for a back to back game. The way that the B10 is scheduled now, we always have plenty of rest between games.

Tamar and Geronimo both need some of the 59 minutes that Kopp and Stewart played against PSU. 59 minutes that resulted in a total of 7 points and TWO rebounds. yikes

When I was a young kid, the Evansville Aces had the "Vampire Five", that would come in for '3 minutes of hell' as a unit. That may be the last time I have witnessed a "2nd unit" positively impact a game.

I still marvel that D2 Evansville would routinely draw 9kplus fans to the games at Roberts Stadium. Now they are fortunate to draw 3k as an MVC D1 team to a new stadium.

Please explain why not Kopp over Stewart. Stewart has a beautiful release, and thats it. And only shoots when he gets the ball wide open. He is a ten minute/game guy, imo.

saw a lot of great regional and semi-state games in Roberts back in late 70s/early 80s including Vincennes Lincoln's run in 81 (great semi state final vs Larry Shellenberg and Floyd Central )

This team can’t keep going with only 2-8 3s made. This team has to hit 10 or more. To much advantage is given up from outside. I don’t care if we take 25-30 shots. Rebounds are important too.

Stewart seems an overall better shooter. Neither can slash and get their own bucket. Only spot up and shoot.

I know Kopp has shown a couple flashes, but Stewart seems a tad better. Both struggle on D, so they may be equally interchangeable. Still not sure why Leal isn’t in more.

Sure would like to see Stewart be more competitive. He has a good eye but is slow afoot on both ends of the floor and seldom attempts to create offense off the dribble. He is thickly built. Wonder if his quicks would be increased by by losing 7-9 lb. He never uses his build as a strength any way.

A lot of things we "hoped" would progress really haven't. Other players that come to mind is Lander. When is the last time he actually saw the floor? Or how about Trayce developing an outside shot or at least going to the right. Both were things he and coach specifically mentioned needing improvement and neither have surfaced in a game to any meaningful level. Have seen flashes of going right. But usually always finishes left handed.

Parker Stewart, IMO, has been the biggest impact and new addition to the team. While he is definitely limited defensively and can't get to the rim, dude can shoot. Too bad he was o'fer yesterday.

Good points.

I will say that I am not putting Lander on this staff. Maybe I am forgetting someone but Lander is the most physically and mentally unprepared college recruit I have seen given minutes over a two year period. I still hold out hope for his development but it is clear he should not have been a 5 or even 4 star recruit.

I think both Johnson and Stewart have made a difference on this team but if a mistake was made, perhaps we didn’t need both Stewart and Kopp. They seem to have similar strengths and weaknesses.

The biggest difference with Trayce imo has been his attitude and motor. Both improved over last year. Yesterday was not a great example of that unfortunately.

I also see improvements in Rob. Hopefully his confidence continues to grow.

We all want instant gratification but if we can keep making small improvements maybe we get in the tournament and make some noise.

I agree with all of that. Especially the part on trace and his motor and Parker and Copp being one in the same. We need not only incremental improvement, but I would take compounding on top of it.
