Romeo

I don't follow the NBA or even the draft, but I've heard several commentators say that next years freshman class was the weakest in many years. I would think that there will be one or two guys that are advised to stay for the possibility of moving to the top of the next years weak draft class. There has been no indication that Romeo and his advisers have anything like that in mind, but it is possible that sticking another year would be a smart tactical move for guys going in the back half of the 1st round this year.

***Edit*** I just looked it up to be sure I wasn't talking out my backside. It looks like it could be worth about 10 - 20 million over the first 2-4 years, if you improved your draft position from #18 to #4. I would think (after looking at last years projected rookie contracts from Forbes) that it would be unwise to even come out at all, if there was a high confidence level of moving into the top 5 of the following years draft from down around the #20 position or so.

FYI, the saying is "even keel."
Depends what you want to believe.

You mean you can't backup anything you wrote? Shocker.:eek:
meaning i'm sure there are some numbers nerds here who would love to break down points per minutes played, offensive efficiency, and the like. me, i have neither the time or desire. however, i do have the time and desire to give you a permanent seat at the kiddie table with loserbear and fauxpeaugh until you learn to behave yourself and develop some manners. until then you will be ignored with the rest of the ill-manned children

He will not be back, the decision has already been made...as for playing Saturday, let's just say that he has no real incentive to play Saturday short of appeasing a fan base that more than likely he can't appease at this point (and shouldn't even try). He is hurt but not to the point he wouldn't have played say this was an NCAA Tournament game. He has already informed the staff that at this point, all decisions he makes will be 100% business.

As for being ready for the NBA... he isn't and he will struggle but coming back to school when he is a lock to get drafted in the top 12 (at worst) will not happen. You get better by playing basketball in an environment that promotes improvement. The NBA and all that it offers (especially for a lottery lock) can help him become a better player than coming back to college.
The NBA may promote improvement, but it is very impatient if that is slow to come. Players not NBA ready toil in the G League hoping for a call up. That league is littered with guys that were once much more impressive in college than Romeo has been.

He hasn't siad or indicated anything about the nba and at this point there is no reason to speculate that he is preparing himself by not playing.

I have been saying all year that:
1.) he isn't ready and will improve himslef by coming back to IU for another year

2.) College basketball is not a "major" to prep for the NBA. You go to college to learn.

3.) If I was coaching and a player "decided" he wasn't going to play so he preserved himself for the draft, I would immediately throw him off the team and give his jersey number to a walk on. Then he would either go pro or transfer.

I have more likes than you with about 1/4 of the posts. Just cause you got called out for your BS posts and you can't handle it, does not put me into the same category as those two IU hating losers. If you can't handle simple call outs on a message board for posting claims outta your keester, that's on you.

Then argue it. Show us all some examples of these "past freshmen" that would've matched Romeo's contribution with this IU roster.

He takes the most shots on the team by far.

He shoots the most threes on the team by far.

He shot 27% from three, which is historically the worst mark of any player that we've had in our history, taking that title from Verdell Jones.

He was 48th out of 50 players in the conference.

I don't have every freshman's per 40 at my fingertips but the dude had the offense changed for him to feature him even though Morgan killed him in every single stat.

If he could shoot, well now we've got something but he couldn't this year, historically so.

What was even his signature moment? Maryland I guess? Which was a loss but that's the only game along with the first half of Penn State where he looked like a lottery pick.....because he was hitting shots.

It's that simple. If he could shoot it would be a game changer for him, but he can't so he relies on scoring in the paint where he's undersized.

He was probably the quietest leading scorer in modern times.

Instead of an awe factor he had a meh factor.

Hell unranked Gabe Kalscheur won more big games for Minnesota than Romeo did for us...because Gabe is a shooting guard who can actually shoot.

If Romeo fixes his shot...look out. If he doesn't, with his light build he's in some trouble as dudes will pass him up physically.

True. That's where both Happ and Edwards are going. The G-League. However, Romeo is going to the NBA. They don't draft you on what you did in college. They draft you on what you can do in the pros. Potential is way more valuable than achievement in college. That Magee kid from Wofford looked amazing last night. He'd eat Romeo up if IU played them in a game today. In 2 years he'll be in Europe if he's lucky and Romeo will be a starting SG in the NBA.

TommyCracker:

I'll try to reply to them all since you took the time to write them all in response to my earlier post.

He takes the most shots on the team by far.

Agreed. He also led the team in scoring in over 50% of games played. He also led the team in scoring average because other guys couldn't score nearly as effectively as he could.

He shoots the most threes on the team by far.

No argument there.

He shot 27% from three, which is historically the worst mark of any player that we've had in our history, taking that title from Verdell Jones.

True again.

He was 48th out of 50 players in the conference.

In what? 3 PT %? He was 2nd team Media and 3rd team coach's all conference. That makes him NO WORSE than like 10th or 11th overall based on his play in conference.

I don't have every freshman's per 40 at my fingertips but the dude had the offense changed for him to feature him even though Morgan killed him in every single stat.

He averaged more points, more assists, a much better FT %, played more minutes, and committed was less fouls than Juwan. We did the weave last year as well. We played Juwan at the 5 last year and passed it into him regularly like last year. What exactly was changed specifically for Romeo at the detriment to the team?

If he could shoot, well now we've got something but he couldn't this year, historically so.

He shot very effectively from everywhere but 3. He shot 44.8% from 2 and 72.2% from the FT line.

What was even his signature moment? Maryland I guess? Which was a loss but that's the only game along with the first half of Penn State where he looked like a lottery pick.....because he was hitting shots.

I would have picked the win over Sparty at home myself. I was also impressed when he got his nose busted early in the year and came back and played the very next game. Or when he puked at HT and gutted out the 2nd half. Was that against Iowa? Can't recall the opponent. He hit like 10 FT's in the 2nd half after he booted though.

It's that simple. If he could shoot it would be a game changer for him, but he can't so he relies on scoring in the paint where he's undersized.

He shot 44.8% from 2, led the team in scoring, drew a ton of fouls and was at the line way more than any other IU player. Seems pretty effective to me.

He was probably the quietest leading scorer in modern times.

Well that's much better than a volume scorer, ala Allen Iverson, who needs 30 shots to get 30 points. He scores in a variety of ways and would've been much better with a good 3 PT %. I've already conceded that was his biggest weakness.

Instead of an awe factor he had a meh factor.

I have no idea what that means. I think he's had a pretty great season for an 18 year old kid.

Hell unranked Gabe Kalscheur won more big games for Minnesota than Romeo did for us...because Gabe is a shooting guard who can actually shoot.

Romeo was an absolute factor in every game IU has won other than St. Francis. To say otherwise is silly. Again, he led IU in scoring in over 50% of the games IU played. IU would have been like 8-22 without him.

If Romeo fixes his shot...look out. If he doesn't, with his light build he's in some trouble as dudes will pass him up physically.

I totally agree that if he fixes his 3 PT shot, he'll be deadly in the NBA. If he can shoot 44.8% from 2, which he already has done this year in college, he'll be fine. All he needs to add to his game is the long ball. He's also got a great FT stroke. Finally, we'll only be able to see how much, if any, his wrist affected his shot this year down the road. If he never becomes a good 3 PT shooter then we can't blame the wrist. If he shoots 40% from 3 in the NBA, then I'd say the wrist was a big factor.

I'm not speculating

12th at worst? You sure about that? There are multiple draft projections that have him closer to 20th. His ppg average plummeted in the second half of the B1G season. That’s a major concern for some scouts.
scouts care about scoring average??

I will give you the 20th slot (for argument)... that means he is guaranteed a shade under $5 million and if his rookie contract gets picked up... add another $6.5 million on top. If any one of my kids comes to me when they are 19 and said I have a company that is willing to pay me $5 million to drop out of college, they only thing that makes me hesitate endorsing that is if I think he /she couldn't handle it emotionally in regards to their job performance or the job requires them to do tasks that are ethically compromising. Those do not apply in this case... you take the $5 million...
I love when people make the decision for other people. It's all up to Romeo. You know that Shaq was projected to go number one in the draft and he decided to play another year in college? He still got drafted number one. You know the same thing happened with Tim Duncan? He decided to play four years despite being a sure top pick the two previous year - including projected to be THE top pick. He was to top pick. I couldn't count the number of times someone here guaranteed Zeller wouldn't come back another year. How many times did some basketball Nostradamus post that stupid, "he gone" phrase. I guarantee it was triple digits. I don't have any idea if Romeo will be back or not. Neither do you. How about we let him make that decision?

“he gone”

Like everyone else here, I don't know the true situation. That said, if he were my son I would advise him not to play. It ain't worth it.

This whole conversation seems silly.

I played D3 college golf for 2 years. If after two years, the PGA called and said I should go pro, they'd let me play in all their tournaments, I could spend the next three years working on my golf game, and they'd give me 5 million bucks, you know where I'd be?

I dunno. But I wouldn't have finished college at age 22, I can guarantee that. I certainly wouldn't go back to school, and neither would you.

Put 400K away. Go to back to school if it doesn't work out. It's not complicated.

What if they said "Come out on the tour now and we'll give you 5 million bucks, or stay in school one more year and come out and we'll give you 20 million bucks"

aside from his ppg avg, what part of romeo's game would you say he excels at? one could argue considering his shooting percentage, if you let other past freshmen have a green light to shoot more than anyone else on the team, and let them play far more minutes than anyone, many could have matched langford's contribution.
.
If he was shooting 30% and scoring the same avg I would see your point, but in general he shoots well while scoring a good avg, while he is the focus of the other team's defense outside of some inside focus on Morgan.

People give Romeo way to much hell because he doesn't fist pump and show emotions. He has the talent and but for the possibility of an injury would surely come back. He is 19 and doesn't verbalize much so he is less likely a leader on the floor than his counterpart freshman.

I give him hell because I watched him not run back on defense and offense too many times this year. Giving effort isn’t asking too much.

That's complete horse shit. Was he walking, jogging? Name the games since this happened "many times"
This team had a lack of mental toughness during a stretch of the season for sure. But lazy.... I'd love to see someone that questions their effort step into thier locker room and let them know. Complete bs.

Romeo is talented but I don’t see a guy that makes his teammates better. He doesn’t shoot well and he isn’t a great ball handler. He is crafty around the bucket but I don’t see him as some great nba prospect based off his game.
Not his fault he was over-hyped and he won't be a star in the NBA. He has no natural position for the league, isn't a good shooter and the NBA bigs will swat his drives into the seats. Good luck to him.

Was talking with my neighbor about that yesterday. Most guys that go into the NBA carry a team on their back. That never happened not even close. If there are NBA teams that think he is ready then damn I might as well go for a tryout. I mean he needs to put on a little more weight and bring an attitude to work with him. I like the kid but I can't see NBA with where his game is right now. Anyone Else?

Noah vonleh did not carry the Hoosiers on his back. In fact the Hoosiers did not even make the NIT Tournament his so year
I think he plays 2 years and I think he plays Saturday.
I think the next game he starts is in the G League.

Zero chance he stays, nor should he considering the millions he can make. As a Basketball player, that's a tough call. He's a classic swiss cheeser(delicious finish, but lots of holes). Obviously he needs to grow, strengthen mostly, & improve a great deal. Yes, he can do those things at the next level, but I'd almost consider him a risk to not stay on a roster past rookie contract at this point, whereas in a year or two, he'd have a much better chance. He showed very good scoring ability, as a slasher & in transition, good pull up & step back shooter, although in consistent. 3 pt & FT shooting were quite dissapointing this year, & that should be a real concern to scouts, imo. He has potential at the next level, but it willl take time & a LOT of work. Unfortunately, his overall game has been exposed to a point this season, as well, not great, which was largely the expectation--& at least the hope--coming in. Frankly, I'd consider him a major bust risk long term, especially considering where his stock was 6 months & prior. If I were a GM I'd probably only draft him as a bargain pick(late 1st round & beyond).

No one is saying that to Romeo. He MIGHT get 20 mil next year. He MIGHT get nothing.

He also might get 55 million over 8 years if he goes, and get nothing if he stays. The opportunity cost is too high.

I’m not an NBA GM, but I believe that unless I had one of the first two or three picks, I’d trade away draft picks all day long to get good 4th, 5th and 6th year veterans. For example, no way I’m taking a player like Romeo with the 10th or 11th pick if I can trade that pick, either alone or as part of a package, for a solid, experienced player. Let someone else take that chance.
