RMK returning to Bloomington

Knight often made me furious while he was coaching here, and I hated it that he wouldn't move on from his hatred of IU.
But I hope he can find some peace back home again in Indiana, and will finally let IU fans publicly appreciate all he did while here.
I wish Coach and his family well.

Getting old is not sad. It is the way of things. Glad he is home.

Ummm, I'm guessing you've never had to care for someone with dementia or Alzheimers, as RMK is reported to be battling? Especially someone who was really sharp and "with it"? Sad isn't a strong enough word to describe how sad it is. If this is true, and guessing how it might have progressed, I'd bet that they feel they have more support in Btown or better Doctors/treatment or both.

Pure speculation on my part, but it wouldn't surprise me if Bob Hammel is the only true friend he's got left in this world, and that is the primary motivation for him returning to Bloomington.

He will be at a game this year. IU needs a statue of him throwing the chair right out front of the hall. I would not be shocked if we go to a final 4 the year we put up a statue.
I can't picture him at a game. I wouldn't rule out a visit to AH or driving through the parking lot.

Buying a home and living in it are two separate things. We don't know he is planning to move back.

I think he has friends from all over. Hammel may be his closest friend now but he has a ton of friends in coaching and former athletes. From various books and articles he is known to be friends and spend time with Bill Parcels, Tony Larussa, Digger Phelps, Don Donoher, and even Gene Keady of late has been closer than most would have ever imagined. I know he was close with John Havlicek who passed away in April this year. How many friends and how close they are is hard to know but I think it is a larger group than some might suggest.

This from first hand experience, Coach has a tremendous network of healthcare providers in Bloomington who love, admire and are indeed...friends with him.

Not true. He has tons of friends from his Ohio days as well as people in coaching. I think this is about his Bloomington times at IU being the best in his life.

Good point. A lot of Knight's players when on to become doctors of one sort or another. My wife's heart doc is Kyle Hornsby.

I was in attendance at a Monroe County Medical Auxiliary meeting once...during the Calbert years...

Anyways...

Knight was the featured speaker...he takes the podium and just goes after every doctor in the room...like some sort of calm, minimally animated Don Rickles...he destroyed the place...everyone in attendance at some point had tears in their eyes from laughter. He is (was) loved by that community.

It has been 20 years since he left IU. Many of those he was close to have likely retired, moved, or even passed away.

I had initially thought that if he does move into the house he bought, being closer to doctors in Indy or Bloomington could be one reason. I don't know where his sons live, but that could be another reason. It could also be the house is on or near a lake in a spot he wants to live.

My dad is the same age as RMK. I spent a day with him this week in my hometown. We talked a lot and he said he is comfortable where he lives. If RMK moves to Bloomington, that is probably where he feels comfortable. It also means he really loved the community and the people.

Bomba's kid is the most sought after MD in the town. Several of the MDs he is familiar with still practice. Large retirement community in Bloomington...It's an excellent place for him...for a great many reasons (even if it never pans out that he "makes his peace" with Indiana University).

The home site is damn near directly across the street from the Autumn Hills Alzheimer's Special Care Center. Probably just a coincidence.

This move probably has as much to do with Karen and her plan for caring for him while he enters the later stages of Alzheimer's and then afterward. She called Bloomington home for a long time too.

It would surprise the hell out of me. RMK is a complex man who simultaneously possesses some immense strengths and some glaring faults -- and both are entirely genuine facets of his character.

But one thing he's never lacked is loyalty both to and from his friends. For instance, you don't think he's still tight with guys like Bill Parcells, Tony LaRussa, Digger Phelps, Don Donoher?

I think it's probably accurate to say that he has no better friend than Bob Hammel. But "the only true friend he's got left"? I seriously doubt that.

That would be bad, thinking of Shooter in Hoosiers wandering out on the court. Lets hope nothing like that happens!

I'd love to see him at least attend a game (and remain in his seat!). But only if Karen and his other caretakers are absolutely certain that he's cognizant of what he's doing. Because, when he was of sound mind, he was pretty adamant that he'd never do that...even when the '76 team was recognized.

I think they need to get him to a game and stage it so he throws a chair at a preplanned point.

FWIW: Scuttlebutt today among the Bton medical community is that Knight's move is due in large part to be close to Dr. Rink. Evidently RMK has maintained Rink as his personal physician all these years and wants/needs to be close to him now.

I appreciate your good intentions, but perhaps disclosing this scuttlebutt on a public forum is unwise and invasive of privacy. There is no hurry; we all can wait until Coach Knight is seen in town.

The reported price of the house he purchased is in excess of a half million. In B'town that is a high end home.

A nice home, to be sure. But not sure I'd call it high-end. There are 7-figure homes here if you want to spend that kind of money.

well, to be fair, that would be a 7 figure home in some markets.
