When our guys came out for the coin toss it looked like a true David and Goliath. We can’t recruit Group of 5 transfers and compete with that. Our recruiting has to step it up if that’s where our program strives to be. That’s my takeaway. Great season. But we’re a long long way away from truly competing in the Top 15.

Now recruiting is significantly via the portal and that requires money. We ponied up money for the assistant coaches (I assume everyone saw the salary reveal article) with a few coaches near two million per year and the lowest a half million per year.

Yea, we hit our ceiling vs. good teams. Only so much can be done in one year under this new staff. If we're able to do it, leveling up our talent to top-20 levels will take a few years.

If we win 7-8 games next years that’s a massive success I think. This was such a unicorn year.
That would still be good. With many portal commits TBD, including QB/OL, it's hard to know quite what to expect next year.
Cig has me believing...I expect a winning season and a bowl.
I think we build on this season and in a few years...we'll see Cig's best IU team...and it will be one where when we face ND or OSU or Alabama, etc. It's billed as a clash of the Titan.
Truthfully, I think we could have and should have competed far more than what we did. They were certainly more athletic and had great depth in talent, but I’m still baffled by the decision making. Why did we wait until 4 minutes to open up the offense and change the tempo? The runs weren’t working and we needed to start slinging far earlier. The one pass play I remember on first down was a short pass and I thought to myself “great! Let’s use short passes in lieu of our run game that wasn’t getting anywhere?” We proceeded to run the ball for 1 yard the next play and found ourselves behind the chains. We opened it up and scored two touchdowns in the waning minutes. Why did we roll over on special teams? There is avoiding mistakes to a strong unit and then there is ceding even competing on special teams. The most frustrating part about this isn’t that the Jimmy’s and Joe’s were so clearly outmatched, it’s that the Joe’s sat back and took punches from Jimmy without a plan to counterpunch. The decisions to punt were stunning in the cowardice the it showed.
I’m baffled at the conservatism too. Seems out of character. But I’m sure the staff handle their reasons and what do I know.

This. If you're going to talk shit prior to the game, don't come out and coach like a pussy. Sorry, but the way they lost is on Coach Cig. They still would have lost last night, even playing aggressive, but I guarantee it would have been a more "competitive" game. IU got stomped in every facet of the game because they played not to get beat by 40.
Coach Cig has them going in the right direction. He is a great coach. Last night(and the beat down in Columbus) was a massive step back. Still, the program is miles from where it was. I don't see a losing season coming from Coach Cig.
IU needs to use that NIL to get 4 and 5 star level guys. Still use the production over potential philosophy but they need to be 4-5 star production guys. The University needs to pony up and build new facilities. I don't give a flying **** if they can't figure out where to build. ****ing build it. The athletic marketing department needs to know who pays the bills and actually act like a marketing department. The entire program, top to bottom, was embarrassed by Notre Dames program.
Still right direction. I expect even better things next year. Even if the team has a worse record, I expect progress for the program.
Disagree. Plays were there to be made, we just didn’t make em. Kurtis was uncharacteristic early in the game. He missed on throws he normally hits on, and the pick really changed the trajectory of the game. Happens unfortunately. But you gotta dance with the girl you came with.
Herein lies the problem… in order to make people feel like we belonged, we abandoned all the reasons why we belonged. If the goal was brand protection then we have failed completely on top of losing the game. Give me a team that loses by 40 on the road by forcing the other team to make plays versus a team that looks absolutely shellshocked and scared to compete. Our brand has now taken on a five minute diatribe by the announcers explaining why we didn’t belong in the game and shouldn’t belong there in the future. It had Lane Kiffin dunking on us for a national audience. And despite what we know, there is nothing about last nights game that provided any evidence to the contrary because we were too scared to put any evidence out there. Our brand is light years ahead of where it was six months ago, but I worry about a quarterback like Mendoza seeing our refusal to open things up.
I know that I am coming off highly negative, and I assure you am not one of these guys falling fans that I’ve been shaking my head at all morning. I remain confident what we have looking at, but I am just confounded by what we put out last night.
