From Osterman's IndyStar story: "The history of the program was, I would say, the triggering point for him in the decision.”

I read a lot of comments on this board about IU's tradition and history not registering with recruits or NIL targets, that they're unfamiliar with IU's past glory, its blue blood has faded. If a dude from Bosnia not only recognizes it but makes it the determining factor in his decision, I would hope rising stars and NIL studs still see IU as a top-tier program, despite its recent (or not so recent) history. That's encouraging to me. Whoever is at the helm next year (for the record I think it'll still be Woodson, unfortunately) will oversee a legacy brand that still holds immense power.

“IU was the highest bidder, and they won championships when my dad was in elementary school” You want his real thoughts?

As they say in the investing world, "past performance is no guarantee of future results" but all the advisors will try to sell you on past performance.

I’m sure it was money. No one would ever say that though.

I haven’t read up on any of this much. Did he, they, reference Coach Woodson much?

Every story I've read Zrno's adviser gives high praise to Brian Walsh while also mentioning Woodson: From the same Osterman story: “Brian was absolutely marvelous and outstanding, not to mention others as well, the whole coaching staff,” Petrovic said. “But the fan base, the atmosphere at the game against USC, facilities, talking to people around the campus, the city, everything clicked together, to be honest with you."
From Rabjohn's 24/7 story: "And of course it's a great university, a great fan base, all across the globe. The coaches, the facilities, the strength and conditioning coach, coach Woody, everyone was great...And of course he had a great relationship with Brian Walsh, who first and foremost was on top of everything."

Our fan base has the worst case of completed PTSD. It's snowballed for nearly a quarter century. We can certainly learn from our coaching hires. We have the money and resources in place to get the strong personality, culture guy We need. We shouldn't over-think it or try to be clever moving forward.

Unfortunately you’re 💯 correct.
UCLA won 7 National Championships in a row before Woodson…excuse me, Wooden retired. A recruit’s great-grandfather was the only one giving a shitt at the dinner table and he’s excused himself to die, as is UCLA today, dead, buried and soon to be all forgotten.

Have you ever thought that thinking we have the money and resources to lure a strong personality, culture guy is itself, overthinking it? Do we give this “NIL package” and ambiguous “resources” too much credit as an advantage in recruiting both coaches and players? Maybe we’re missing something more elusive than the more obvious, ego-driven delusions of grandeur in the solid rock memories of banners now worn, sanded in the winds of time.

C'mon, we all know this "history of the program" quote was a contractual obligation.

The real "triggering point" was Bigfoot offering him 3x more than any other program.

C'mon y'all, IU was going up against Wisconsin, surely the Badgers have an ulminited NIL account! At least IU beat Wisconsin at something basketball-related...
And Woodson is a complete liability to the program. It absolutely does not matter who he signs. 5-stars. 4-stars. Twenty-one year old freshmen. He cannot coach. He cannot improve a team. He cannot fix problems. His teams, all of them, play like the walking dead.
This kid needs to have a coach that will teach him the finer details in how to improve. No way he’s getting any of that under Woodson.

Dude plays basketball in empty gyms in Bosnia. He came to AH and saw 15k people going nuts over a game.
He probably asked his handlers ‘wtf is this’ and got told Indiana is a 5 champiosbip legacy brand and people care and he probably liked the atmosphere being in one of the best basketball environments in the world.

Seems like his answer is likely pretty legit to me.

As an amateur he may see empty gyms. Google Bosnia or Serbia pro basketball (which is what we are competing with) and talk about rabid fans. Then come back here and post a stupid comment.

If you think Indiana and Kentucky have passions across state lines I recommend going over there and seeing true passion.

Dumb.

Have things changed that would allow a kid here on a visa to get NIL deals?

Kentucky went to the Bahamas so their guy could get paid. Purdoo went to Toronto for their guy.

I bet he’s never threatened them with “running until you think you can’t eat supper”. As a footnote to history, they did, indeed, win “up there” on Monday night from the motivating genius that was Bob Knight.

Be glad to bet anyone and I’ll give them 2 to 1 odds, Woodson will never step foot in assembly hall after march 2025.
This is actually the absolute best betting advice I’ve ever seen on here from Cav’s Corner and I think you are dialed in completely on this. This is like a lock of the year bet. He may have already been informed. When he tanks it here in February, it’s all but signed, sealed and delivered.

No, I want some of what he's smoking.
IU is a storied program only within a small bubble of folks who only read their own drivel.
Get outside the Hoosier state and sadly we're viewed as has-beens
I hate to tell you this but IU is a storied program. I run into people out of state all the time who know the Indiana name and the basketball pedigree. Yes, we've been mediocre now for too long a time. This has happened to teams in all sports. I still think with the right leadership both on and off the court, we can attract excellent talent and return to be very competitive nationally and regain some of that stature.

Well…in all fairness, you’re about 20/80 on accuracy. But I do get it. I understand you are a hype guy that gets caught up in the PR where most folks keep a very level head and take in the historical data to not make wild predictions. Emotional fans tend to buy in hook, line and sinker. You are right on this one though.
