Quote from Mr Basketball Kyle Guy on why he did not choose Indiana

I've never understood the "he's a good man" narrative either. There's a lot of evidence suggesting that he's a difficult person to deal with, along with just being an odd duck.
That is the one thing I can't understand about the die hard Crean lovers, is why they are so loyal to him. He isn't real personable and the more you hear him talk in his press conferences the more unlikeable he becomes. Not to mention how eccentric he is, his strange quirks, and his Creaning of players. I mean he is so disloyal to IU players/students there is a nickname for it.

some folks neeeeeeed that snake oil, man!

I'm sure there are plenty of people who know much better about him, but the uniform comment about Crean is that he talks. And talks and talks and talks and talks and talks. Players, recruits, parents, coaches, outings, clinics, you name it. He never stops, and it puts people off.

I've had people tell me it's as if 's trying to prove how smart he is, as if he doesn't think he'll be taken seriously (and, inadvertently, isn't).

Take the late-season 2 hour practices. Crean would run them and do demonstrations to visitors to show plays that they run. No one has ever figured out WHY he would want to do that (because I'm sure Coach Buck & others have told him to taper off to rest players legs), but he'd do it anyways - at least up until last year. Head scratcher.

Truth is stranger than fiction. BTW, here's a fun game...replace CTC's name for other basketball coaches in our past, and this sentence is still true.

But the highly competent ones were accorded respect based on their achievements, while those who didn't measure up professionally eventually saw their support erode. That appears to be what's happening Crean right now.

Wasn't speaking to competence...more to the existence of that "cult" like devotion that certainly is not in evidence with CTC.

But that devotion was always deeply rooted in a high level of competence, which is why there's so much less of it attached to Crean. Sounds like coaches have known for some time, and recruits and their parents are increasingly aware now, too. It only makes sense that fans are getting wise, too.

Well, he claims he's a Christian and that's good enough for a lot of people.

Somebody that lives in southern Indiana and is a rabid IU fan is probably not going to quite going to games unless we get really really bad . My uncle is Bedford is one of the IU forever fans no matter what. I highly doubt they would give up tickets to IU to drive and watch the Pacers instead. I would think we would need at least several pretty bad years before seats start going empty. It will be to late then because the extension will have already been inked.

Then why do I keep reading posts complaining about cultish CTC lovers? I have yet to see anyone that fits that bill.

You aren't looking very hard. They're here, and they seem content with IU as an average to above average program. They would certainly celebrate any greater achievements, but they neither expect nor "demand" that IU compete at that level. Doesn't make them bad people in any way, they're just happy with where the program is and with Crean's stewardship of it.

Good story, but that hardly qualifies as cult level status.

"
Guy had been to enough Indiana games as a kid to create Hoosier dreams.

His great-uncle was on the board of trustees at IU. His great-grandfather, once the commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, was friends with Bobby Knight.

“I grew up wanting to go to IU,” Guy said. “My grandparents had season tickets.”

It’s just that Tom Crean wasn’t Tony Bennett.

UVa’s coach did more for Guy than IU’s.

“I just didn’t really click with Crean,” Guy said. “I got respect for him, but it didn’t really click that he was going to be my father figure for four years."

Where's the link to this article? I don't doubt the veracity of the quotes, but I'd like to read the entire article.

Nope - you're spot on.

The mother of a Mr. Basketball told Coach Buckley not to even bother recruiting her son because she said "Crean is a flake".
Sounds like something you would read in the National Enquier come on Tas your better than this.

Didn't you find Guy's repudiation of Crean disturbing? An IU fan from an IU family who made it clear he didn't go to IU because of the coach.

He may not be getting talent out of the state but he has a ton of talent on his current team. How many 4 or 5 star kids are on the current roster? Preseason IU fans were talking national title hopes. While that has changed somewhat he still has talent
And yet this squad is very average. How can this be?

In fairness to him, he's had injuries this year that has hurt the team. If Iu beats Purdue at Assembly Hall a bunch of the people will shout his praises. It's that way any where you turn.

And yet he still managed to get the majority of in-state recruits he targeted and a far greater share of the top 2-3 recruits than we are getting now with a shotgun approach. Umm, what was your point?

Also, as a corollary to this, it's also worth noting that I think the top talent in IN was in a swoon during some of RMK's later years. There was a stretch in the late 80s where the top IN recruits weren't national caliber. There's certainly been an upsurge I believe since the mid to late 90s.
