Guy had been to enough Indiana games as a kid to create Hoosier dreams.

His great-uncle was on the board of trustees at IU. His great-grandfather, once the commissioner of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, was friends with Bobby Knight.

“I grew up wanting to go to IU,” Guy said. “My grandparents had season tickets.”

It’s just that Tom Crean wasn’t Tony Bennett.

UVa’s coach did more for Guy than IU’s.

“I just didn’t really click with Crean,” Guy said. “I got respect for him, but it didn’t really click that he was going to be my father figure for four years."

Nothing to see here per kool aid drinkers.

We missed the boat on Guy. Sounds like he was saying "coach goes I come". Too late now.

This is what you hear from the majority of major HS and AAU coaches in IN. It's not just bad luck that we miss on most in state talent. It's not IU...it's IU's coach. Has been this way for about 5 years.
And fred thinks we are going to compete for national titles as all the best talent leaves?

Better than a butt cut. If we're going to make fun of hair, and all, that's a good start.
Lmao. We just lost a different recruit to Virginia........Commonwealth. Hahahahahahah. You can't make up how bad it is right now.

So a recruit got along with one coach better than other coaches? Is this breaking news? Isn't this the case with every player ever?

Not that Crean is anywhere close to the coach Knight was, but do you have any idea how many players didn't get along with RMK? Hint: a lot.

He grew up a die hard IU fan with extensive ties to the university. Was that point lost on you? You'd have to REALLY not like the coach to not go there. How long are some of you geniuses going to keep making excuses?

As i I said the kool aid drinkers will say losing the best indiana talent year after year is no big deal. Nothing to see here.

This is the norm for IU...no one who has seen Crean for any time wants to play for him. We have to spend $700,000 travel to find kids who don't know better and trick them into coming to IU.

This is also why his transfer rate is through the rough.

But he's your man, isn't he Fred! Good call. Better extend coach now before he gets away.

And yet he still managed to get the majority of in-state recruits he targeted and a far greater share of the top 2-3 recruits than we are getting now with a shotgun approach. Umm, what was your point?

Not getting along with a coach, whether or not that's Crean or Knight, is perfectly understandable.

But it's not "a" recruit. For 2017 it was every recruit from the state of Indiana. In the past three classes only one in-state player has committed to the Hoosiers. And that player...? Grant Gelon.

That's a little more than concerning and strikes at a deeper issue than just "not getting along with the coach"...

I got blasted when he signed with UVA and said his parents not Kyle felt comfortable with Crean
As did I. Crean is the sole reason he did not come to IU. Guy reached out to players and former coaches for advise. He was told by a player that Crean would make promises he couldn't keep.

He may not be getting talent out of the state but he has a ton of talent on his current team. How many 4 or 5 star kids are on the current roster? Preseason IU fans were talking national title hopes. While that has changed somewhat he still has talent

Crean has this and maybe next year....thats it.

Just sit back and watch.

But he doesn't run a system that gets the most out of their abilities as a team. That is the issue.

He can take a Vic or an OG - highly athletic guys with great work ethics - and make them into guys that look good in highlights and pro prospects. But for his system to work, you have to have impact players like Cody (or Yogi), and since Ferrell he hasn't recruited any to Bloomington. A big portion WHY is that to high-level recruits like Guy (or Wilkes, or Scruggs, or Bamba, Jackson Jr.,Williams, etc . . .) see what development they're going to get to the next level. Both Zeller AND Bryant regressed into their sophomore year - you think recruits (and their coaches) don't notice that?

And Crean is also known as one who does a lot of talking - yet people question his sincerity of what he promises and his loyalty to kids.

He won't touch a high level kid in Indiana again. He was lucky to get Cody, and a big reason why he did was Washington, Indiana is a rabid IU town.

It is clear the in state recruits get to see enough of him to know they don't want to come to IU. It is no coincidence he is getting guys from far away that are probably not very familiar with him or the program. If you take walk ons out of the equation next year we will more than likely have no Indiana kids on the roster. It’s Indiana It’s Indiana!!

Nope - you're spot on.

The mother of a Mr. Basketball told Coach Buckley not to even bother recruiting her son because she said "Crean is a flake".

That is the one thing I can't understand about the die hard Crean lovers, is why they are so loyal to him. He isn't real personable and the more you hear him talk in his press conferences the more unlikeable he becomes. Not to mention how eccentric he is, his strange quirks, and his Creaning of players. I mean he is so disloyal to IU players/students there is a nickname for it.

Yeah it is really bizarre to me as well. He really is not all that likeable imo but boy the Crean loyalist are with him like he is their cult leader.

I've never understood the "he's a good man" narrative either. There's a lot of evidence suggesting that he's a difficult person to deal with, along with just being an odd duck.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who know much better about him, but the uniform comment about Crean is that he talks. And talks and talks and talks and talks and talks. Players, recruits, parents, coaches, outings, clinics, you name it. He never stops, and it puts people off.
