At what point in the season do you think it is worth burning a 4 star QBs eligibility? How many games in or left? When is it a total waste (see AT) burning up a redshirt? This should be good...lol

Rather evasive answers so far...vbg...If Ramsey keeps winning, then what do you do? Put Penix in anyway until the redshirt is used up? If Penix is needed he will play...no doubt.. that's not what Im talking about. Say Ramsey wins all the games we should. DO you replace him anyway. Many will answer yes I think...vbg...

I understand he needs reps...but at what price. We don't get talent like his often. The smart play is let him have this year to get ready to compete for the job next season. Ramsey won the job and looks good. I wonder how everyone will feel after Penix throws his first interception? Should be a great character study of our fan base...vbg

I don't think this is the approach the coaching staff will take but I would like to see Penix have a start in the next three games. Most recognize he has more talent so lets see him start a game and see how he manages the game. IU will go back to Ramsey if Penix doesn't excel and IU shouldn't miss a beat on offense. To have a shot at winning games against the "big 4" IU needs the talents of Penix leading the offense.

Don't get me wrong, I think Ramsey is a very good QB. He just isn't as good as Penix and looking at the FIU game I think it shows.

This staff has watched Penix play since March. If he deserved to be starting he'd be starting, in my opinion.

I think he will be able to help us, particularly in games where it's clear that the opponents defense is completely selling out to stop the run but until Ramsey gets hurt or shows he's having an off game and not playing winning football I don't see Penix replacing him as the starter.

That said, everybody ends up getting dinged in Big Ten play. When Ramsey is slowed then Penix will get his shot at starting...(IMO).

Our fan base has great character. If they held it together through RL's five interception performance against WF a couple of years ago, they won't come unhinged as a result of a pick (or two) from a rookie.

Stirring the pot a bit today are ya, Col? Vbg.

If Tom thinks that MP can help us win games this year, then absolutely no way he's redshirting. If that statement is true, then I think it's important to play MP tomorrow against BSU. I would feel much more comfortable inserting MP in the game against Sparty knowing that he played and gained experience in the game against BSU.

It is clearly an unusual situation for IU because we usually don't have a backup QB on the sidelines with Penix's skill set. I'm hoping this will be a nice problem to have moving forward!

I'd rather M$U had the least amount film on him possible.

Forget the redshirt. We need him to be ready to play. If we can’t recruit behind him then we aren’t headed in the right direction and CTA won’t be around. I like both QBs and the coaching staff.
This is solid logic...for the average backup QB. And maybe that is what the coaches feel they must do. My only argument is that using him in this manner, if Ramsey continues his solid play, why use this year up for a 4* player we may not see the like of again for another 20 yrs (aka ARE)? Ramsey will miss some plays...every QB does...but is1-2 plays worth it after his 4 game limit is reached? Will it win us more games? Freshmen make mistakes...ask Ramsey...Penix will too. Can we afford that in a tough crawl to 6 wins? How many games are you willing to lose while he learns against the big boys? Or do you sacrifice Ramsey against the OSU's and UM's and PSUs of our conference, games with a low chance to win, then let Penix get the rest? How will Ramsey feel? How would you feel? I think this argument of get him ready can really backfire. Why do it if Ramsey gets the job done? Wanna know how to blow up a team? This can do it.

I always believed that AT got robbed by starting him half way through a season that was what it was with or without him. Mallory had his reasons too but if AT hadn't used it up for just handful of games, he would have gotten that critical 4th year to win the Heisman and another All-American ring. I could be wrong but don't think so.

One final point. If we fear losing Penix if he cant start, wont bumping a winning Ramsey cause him to look elsewhere too? Once a starter...just a thought.

Oh yeah...Semper Fi...

I seriously doubt if Penix is here for 5 years so the 4 games you speak of is irrelevant.

Sooooo your ready to kick out Ramsey for the superstar Penix huh? Well, I mean, he might not be here 4 years like Ramsey...all the more reason to shove him in...right?

OMG...help me...vbg

So, absent issues related to character or injury, why shouldn’t the best players play, as you seem to be suggesting?

i wouldn't start him, just bring him in occasionally forget the redshirt.

Good thing you edited your spelling . . . Freud was getting interested in studying your post . . . .

Looks like today's action is pointing toward burning the redshirt. Probably not what you wanted to see or hear.

Could be youre right...but not so sure yet. Allen talks like there will be none but lets see. Hey I take what I get, not what I want...Im an IU FB Fan...vbg

With the frequency now of QB transfers, what is the point of redshirting him? Just as likely to leave in 5th year anyway. Ramsey is performing well. Penix has gotten some reps. It is nice having a viable backup. If PR gets hurt and we need MP beyond 4 games, then thats fine. Win now, and we can worry about winning later when that time comes. At this time, I feel like the staff will do what is best for the team to win games and the players are bought into what their roles are.

While you worry about the team, don't forget to worry about the player or they wont come any more...vbg

Have to completely disagree. You act like Penix is the only option at Backup. He isn't...you also don't have a fortune teller fez to predict the future. Your philosophy can blow up right in your (fans)face. Better be smart with rare talent imo.

Fate will dictate...but if the choice is there, save him for the future...

Get as many reps as possible before the shirt is burned and then pull it if you have to. Yesterday showed MP has a lot of work to do.

Penix is getting reps and creating scoring drives. Ramsey is winning games. Seems great to me. I’m guessing everyone ‘s pretty happy at the moment. CTA will start the one one who he think gives best chance to win. I love watching both.
I’m very impressed with coaching staff and players. Let’s beat MSU and continue to have fun. Go Hoosiers!

IMHO, Penix pretty much has to burn his R/S as the backup at this point. That was pretty much decided when Dawkins decided to quit football.

Ramsey's going to get dinged up at some point. I love Reese Taylor but he didn't go through fall camp as a full-time QB. After Taylor you've got a walk-on.

Nebraska probably intended to just play one quarterback. That has worked out pretty well for them, hasn't it.

Well apparently, Taylor's not our #3...Mike Fiacable is...and did a nice job yesterday while in. Very composed...

What do you mean about worrying about the players (honest question)? I imagine Penix would be thrilled not being redshirted. And I doubt Ramsey really cares about not getting a full 60 minutes.

And Penix is the #2. Future hopes and dreams aren't going to change that.

Taylor would move around Fiacable immediately if either Ramsey or Penix got hurt. He’s not eating up practice time at qb because they need him elsewhere but he’d be right behind those guys if circumstances necessitated it.
