Most the people I've interacted with seem to be under the assumption that Bazelak will be the starter. I'm not trying to be a contrarian I'm just not sure why this is seen as a foregone conclusion. Have I missed something? Maybe part of the logic is Bazelak didn't transfer here to be a backup? But I doubt he was given any kind of guarantee.
From what I've heard Tuttle has good standing in the locker room and I also think he may have a little bit higher ceiling. With good health and a more favorable situation Tuttle-power might make a bigger jump than people expect.
I'm not picking sides, I want whoever gives iufb a better chance to win to play. Bazelak was SEC Frosh of the year and that vid of him draining triples in Assembly Hall was impressive. My guess is both will have opportunities to play this year and both have the potential to be solid QBs. Curious to see what you all think.

I remember finding this article when Bazelak transferred in. It’s hard for me to think that he’s going to come in and just take the job from Tuttle. I just hope whoever is tagged as the starter, the staff sticks with him.

Tuttle seems like a great kid that’s liked by both team mates and coaches.
But if CB cannot beat him out I fear we are in for another 2 or 3 win season.

Very possible competition against Bazelak makes Tuttle better. He has the tools to lead a successful offense if he picks up speed reading through his progressions. Something Penix really shined at. But in the end whichever QB can extend pass plays to the best outcome is the guy. But neither will look very good if the rushing attack is not viable.

It is in the nature of fans to bestow all great hope upon the new shiney object. The fact is a lot of Mizzou fans were not in love with him at all.

We know Tuttle and have seen the weaknesses. We will get to know CB and see his weaknesses as well.

I too believe that CB is the better QB, but he ain't a healthy Penix. Closer to Ramsey 2.0

Exactly! Tuttle has managed to get a few wins but he has done little else to impress. If Bez can't beat him out then we are in trouble.

This is an interesting race. Our top three QB's are all coming off injuries. Tuttle (Foot), Bazelak (was it ankle or knee?), and Williams (ACL). I thought I read or heard that Bell's offense is more up tempo and some RPO and if I that is the case then you would think Bazelak and Williams are more suited for that type of offense. Tuttle doesn't strike me as the RPO kind of QB.

With the speed they brought in at the RB position it seems we are set up for the short quick passing to offset the ineffective line play for true running. With that in mind, this strikes me as an offense that plays more to the strength of Bazelak and not Tuttle.

Maybe this is a better suited scheme for Tuttle and what we've seen in the prior years was an offense that didn't suit his style. I don't know. I guess we will find out in a few short weeks on a Friday night. Go Hoosiers!

Often reminded of the Ramsey-Penix controversy and how most people wanted Penix to take over. We all know how that turned out with Ramsey's success at NW.

We haven’t made it through a season with a clean quarterback in a long time. A starter will get named, they’ll say he’s the permanent guy, they’ll mean it, and both will play.

I don’t claim Tuttle to be the next savior per se, but I also don’t think he has been used well or developed well thus far prior to Bell. I also don’t think he was an Elite 11 HS QB because all the scouts were way off.

I like that Bell got here in Jan and has had all spring/summer and now Fall camp to work with all QB’s but specifically our two lead candidates Tuttle & CB. I am not losing sleep and will trust whatever decision the coaches make. I also think the closer the race the better as college FB has lots of injuries and we need our top back up ready to go.

Peyton Manning was 3-13 his first year as a starter. Many players when given full reigns and coaching can rise up. I hope both JT and CB are growing and developing and that whoever is named starter will help Bell run the offense he wants to bring the Hoosiers back to scoring points again!

Personally I think the scouts were wrong,he looks the part but just doesn’t have the intangibles.
Gunnar Kiel and Earl Hanniford come to mind.
Two can’t miss QB’s that didn’t live up to the hype,it happens.

To the people who seem to strongly believe they know who is better, what are you basing that on? Have you been at practice? Did you watch all the Mizzou games? I feel like I barely have enough data to assess Tuttle, and all I have for Baz is some YouTube highlights.

I will say if it's even I would go with Baz since he has two years of eligibility remaining - giving him the nod would create continuity going into next year. So from that standpoint maybe Baz has the advantage since all he has to do is tie where Tuttle has to win.

I have no idea if CB is better than Tuttle.
What I am saying is if he isn’t better we are in for another 2-3 win season in my opinion.

It really is a matter of whomever gives us the best chance to win. They hoped someone would separate themselves in the Spring but it didn’t happen. Whenever they do make a choice, there won’t be tons of time between then and the Illinois game. Whomever wins the job is hardly a shoe-in to keep it all year. Injuries happen at that position, as both Allen and Bell know. They’ll both be a part of the final choice, even though TA hasn’t hasn’t ever had much involvement in the O from the day he was named head coach (remember his “head coach of the offense” comments regarding the role of his offensive coordinators?). The choice will strongly favor the guy who makes the fewest mistakes, rather than the guy with the biggest arm. We arent nearly talented enough to overcome turnovers and mental errors.

They didn't separate in spring because TA had to keep Tuttle from transferring. You will start to hear more about the separation as they get closer to gameday. CB didn't come here to sit and would not have been brought in if they had faith in JT. Don't complicate it too much.

The choice has been made. The notion that was being sold here earlier about both seeing a lot of action is BS.

So they sold that BS just to keep Tuttle from transferring? Sounds like the same BS they sold Ramsey when Penix was always going to be the guy. Why go through all that BS if CB was always going to be the guy? Especially if CB is just Ramsey 2.0 and Tuttle is...Lagow 2.0.

That's an insane thought process on the QB choice.

Would have been better to just give it to CB and give him all the reps in spring. If Tuttle transfers, keep McCulley as developing QB2 instead of WR.

Tuttle didn’t come here to sit, either, and he definitely didn’t hang around to sit. If you’re saying TA didn’t choose a quarterback so that he could keep JT from transferring, that would be problematic, to say the least.

Agree its insane. But don't complicate it too much.
They haven't gone through any BS.....simply stayed neutral to keep QB depth. Tuttle is a great option as a back-up. Neither "need snaps" to reach their potential. They all get snaps in the spring and this spring they all learned a new offense. Now they will install the game plan out of the offense for IL and you will start to hear how CB executes it better. That's all and in the meantime, JT thinks he has a shot and sticks around. McCulley chose to switch to WR as his baptism into being a BIG10 QB wasn't what he thought it was going to be.

Agree but it's simply part of the game to be played now with the portal

TA was not the selling BS it was a poster here. The decision was made early. Injuries could change that

They'll both play because both will get hurt running for their life from our perpetual swiss cheese offensive line. At some point, we'll probably see McCulley back under center.

Maybe its because he's not really ever gotten a full allotment of 1st team reps, and/or because of injuries...but man, I really, really don't trust Tuttle in a higher volume, short passing game. I have no clue what Bezelak will bring to Bell's IU offense. His high interception numbers scare me as well. I just know I don't like the thought of Tuttle throwing little bubbles, outs, slants etc... As he seems prone to mis reads and mis throws, and those can tend lead to catastrophic errors when you're throwing near the line of scrimmage a lot.

And one of the things that led to our successes in 19 and 20 was we took the ball away more than we gave it away. Does Payton Ramsey have any eligibility left? Covid gave everyone an extra year right...just bring him back, I'm sure there's a new exception rule somewhere that would allow for it.

JT is a a solid BIG level backup.

I worry more about Tuttle’s completion rate to the other team than our own at this point.

I'm worried that CB is as well. I suppose his Freshman year at Mizzou shows he's got a higher ceiling than JT?

Really, someone that can lead the team, complete all the easier short yardage passes, and not make huge game changing mistakes, is probably what we need for a year or two. If they can tuck the ball and pick up 7-8 yards, and some first downs, running the ball, all the better.

I think our defense can get back to 19 and 20 type play, but they can't be on the field as much as our offense put them there last year. Gotta get some first downs, flip the field at a minimum.

Our biggest challenge on D is we haven’t seen a force in the middle like JJ since he left. He helped our higher risk approach, which was further aided by the unique nature of Covid prep. We need a middle space eater who can occupy opposing OL.

Making a statement on a message board without offering any supporting evidence doesn't make something a fact. Name a source or provide evidence or I will file such statements away in the speculation category. Even if Baz wins the job that in and of itself isn't proof Tuttle entered camp with no shot at being the starter. I'm not even saying people are wrong I'm just saying I need more than a non-supported statement on a message board. Lol cheers.

I guess the thing that gives me more hope with Bazalek is that he has shown an ability to make throws under duress in the SEC.

What we need right now would be Peyton Ramsey and I think the coaches see that in CB. From the knowledgeable Mizzou fans I have spoken to, they all got frustrated last season but to a man say he has the ability and the right schemes and coaches will bring that to the surface. We shall see.

Completely agree on the D side. 19 and 20 were both well played and we went away from the schemes that worked in 21. We simply have to make the plays in the trenches to limit long exhausting drives. Getting TA out of babysitting Sheridan all game and focused on calling the D HAS to be a good thing.

DING!

I've been sitting here thinking about this. Bazelak has 722 career passing attempts, Tuttle has 170. Even if Tuttle makes a big jump that in-game experience is invaluable. Plus Baz has two years of eligibility remaining and Tuttle has one.
From what I can gather they both have good arms but not elite arms. (Better that Ramsey but not Penix.) I'm not sure the diffence is enough to separate the two one way or the other. Neither QB is going to beat you with their feet but Tuttle seems to have a slight edge in this category but again probably not enought to move the needle much.
Sooo what I'm saying is that Tuttle has to win somewhat decisively or it's likely going to be Baz. I wasn't ever predicting Tuttle would win but I've changed my mind...the odds do indeed seem in Baz's favor. Haha I'm late to the party I guess.
<---- thanks for putting up with this guy
